Theres nothing i hate more than that. It pisses me off. Nothing should snach the cursor away while I am typing. YOu hit the spacebar which is like 'enter' for selections in windows. You have no idea what you just agreed to.

Seems like a dumb UI thing that should have been fixed ages ago. Error messages come up from who knows where sometimes. There's not even history to figure out what you just did. Usually you find out within a few days though..

Linux does this too, but I'm not sure they have the spacebar being the default key problem.

You can add 100 threads if you have valid reason and that is not cheating. It will only benefit you if you are sharing CPU time with other programs. If you are dedicated, then it will tend to slow you down even.

Results has nothing to do with it. THis is not new. THis is how us companies use to be. Its reflected in their names even. But when you start hiring cronies that have no technical skills to do the management, then you start down a new path of politics and incompetence due to inability to comprehend the technology.

Look at Japanese auto-makers. You will see their upper management are people that mostly started as mechanics and engineers, etc. and have been with the company 50 years. When you give a presentation to Japanese company, management wants to know technical details. You can _not_ BS them.

In the US typically upper management has no idea what you are talking about. So You have a seperation where people capable of understanding the technicals do not understand the financials and vice versa.

The Japanese will continue to smash US car companies as long as this is the case.

Intel has been marketing this way for as long as I can remember starting with the built in co-processor. It has worked well for them too.

It is a marketing ploy. In multiprocessing world performance and responsiveness mean distinct things. In the marketing world I guess intel felt it was ok to substitute the word 'performance' where responsiveness should have been.

  13. Re:It's been that way since day one, desktop as we on Hyperthreading Hurts Server Performance? · · Score: 1

I don't entirely agree. AMD's multi-core architecture was targeted from the start toward servers. And its quite fair to say servers benefit from it. With HT, servers are not benefiting from it in their 'server' capacity. That is, if the server is loaded, which is the job of a server-to be loaded) then HT benefit is reduced.

Basically HT provides greater responsiveness, than performance so it should be targeted toward desktop not servers.

Its ok to have drawbacks, but they should not be in the thing you are designing for or rather advertising for.

  14. Re:This is news? on Hyperthreading Hurts Server Performance? · · Score: 1

Depends on the architecture. Its the sharing of memory that slows them down. This is why CPUs intended for multi setups have additional cache on-board. If there is no memory contention then the dual can appear more responsive, but i would never call it 'faster.'

Quite interesting. So SQL Server spawns processes as opposed to threads when it finds a second processor? I can't imagine thats true. What exactly do you mean by a 'full CPU's worth of load'?

The only situation I can imagine is if SQLServer spawns say, 2 threads per CPU for performance. But this is a cheating way to get more CPU time and I wouldn't expect a _server_ class program to do such a thing when such a program would tend to expect its getting dedicated CPU anyway.

In the automotive world we entertained a 5v power line in addition to the 12v since all the computers in the car will need 5v, but the noise issue has not been solved yet.

Perhaps its time for a house to along with the 120v a/c to have 12v dc plugs. Then you can have just a single transformer instead of 1 for scanner, modem, cellphone, answering machine, and every other device with a cpu inside...

Hording does not make wealth, but it helps to keep in. Actually its the governments primary function (in USA) is to ensure the protection of wealth. Certainly the wealthy are pushing laws every day to ensure this as well.

I agree, don't be folled by class hatred, racism, religious extremism. They are all ways to get one powerless person to blame another powerless person for the results of the exploits of the wealthy.

Of course as long as poor people desire to be 'rich' the situation will never end. Richness itself requires a degree of exploitation.
