The gaming industry is a business. They make products for their customers. If you want innovation, STOP BUYING THE FUCKING GAMES! Eventually they will get the hint. But that will never happen because, as much as it may be against your wishes, PEOPLE LIKE THE FUCKING GAMES!

Get it through your fucking heads.
The RIAA is not going anywhere any time soon because PEOPLE LIKE THE FUCKING MUSIC!
"Mainstream" games are not going anywhere any time soon because PEOPLE LIKE THE FUCKING GAMES!
"Reality" TV is not going anywhere any time soon because PEOPLE LIKE THE FUCKING SHOWS!

As much as this may offend you and your precious sense of "creativity" (I loathe "reality" tv), you are going to have to live with it for the forseeable future. If this is too much for you to handle, save the rest of us the trouble and kill yourself now. Not everybody shares your views; in fact, most people don't.

  6. Yes, but... on Sun Spearheads Open DRM · · Score: -1

...you (most likely) don't have the right to share the file! If you did, it wouldn't need to be DRM'd.

Personally, I don't really mind DRM, though I do understand other people's perspectives. If people didn't rip off other people, nobody would need DRM. Contrary to (what appears to be) popular opinion here, you don't have some God-given right to infringe other people's copyrights for any reason you see fit. I believe that piracy DOES affect sales, but I don't believe that it affects it enough to result in any significant losses (especially for the big guys like EA, Ubisoft, etc). I fail to see how DRM will affect legitimate file sharing. If anything, I think some people will get annoyed with it and seek alternatives, resulting in more exposure for indie developers and artists.

That being said, ultimately I beleive that DRM will never be fool proof because the concept is fundamentally flawed. But it won't stop people from trying, and people won't stop ripping off other people. So the beat goes on.

Logically, I agree with you. It drives me fucking nuts when I visit a url that looks promising only to find it has been squatted. On the other hand, this goes on all the time in the real world. People get into real estate and buy up land situated to become prime development area in the next 10 years or so for the sole purpose of selling it later for a huge profit. Some people make millions doing this. To me, it seems like this is the same kind of thing, so maybe it should be allowed to continue. On the other hand, the Supreme Court ruling the other day kind of throws this whole thing in the blender...

Just because somebody is offering something does not mean that a transaction ever took place. However, don't drug dealers get nailed with "intent to distribute"? Isn't that what this really is? Why are you going to offer something if your intent is not to distribute? Granted drugs != copyright infringement, but I hope this leads to two offense. A relatively high "copyrighting infringement" penalty (where they can prove a transaction occurred), and a lesser "intent to infringe copyright" penalty (where they can't prove it). Then it will be up to the RIAA/MPAA/whoever to prove a transaction occurred. That makes sense to me, at least.

I am somewhat of a Microsoft apologist, but I don't really read Microsoft fanboy websites (Slashdot is a Linux/OSS fanboy website, if you didn't notice). I wonder if the situation is reversed. Do Microsoft fanboys cry foul every time some study put out by a friend of Linux/OSS puts Linux/OSS on top of Microsoft? Probably. It's actually kind of funny how some people on both sides blindly follow their beliefs.

With that out of the way, the NHL is dead. I know it's popular to be anti-establishment around here, but if the NHL owners aren't making enough money (or, as they claim, are actually losing money) then what incentive is there for them to keep the league going in its current form? The NHL players have the highest average salary of all the major sports. The NHL makes far less revenue than all the other major sports leagues (NASCAR generates more revenue), so this situation couldn't be sustained. If the players are unwilling to accept a salary cap, the owners will not think the league is viable and keep it locked. I also think that the lack of black players has an effect on the NHL's audience. This isn't really a racsist issue; it is simply a cultural issue. If they can get a more diverse group of players than a more diverse group of fans will go to the games. The bottom line is that the owners have to make more than they spend. Until the league is positioned to allow that to happen, the seasons will go by. The sad truth is that most people don't care about hockey and probably haven't even noticed it is missing. More people care about NASCAR than hockey, for fuck's sake.

  25. Re:mod parent up on MPAA Targets TV Download Sites · · Score: -1

I understand your argument and mostly agree. I don't really have an ethical problem with downloading over-the-air broadcasts (although in many cases there are plans to release the series on DVD a short time later), but I don't like the idea of downloading cable broadcasts. Cable provides you with programming on the basis that you have a subscription. If you're "sharing" these broadcasts with any Joe Schmoe out there, you are most definately breaching the terms of that contract (and in my opinion Comcast/Time Warner/whoever would be justified in terminating your contract). However, if you're downloading a copy for personal use and are a subscriber, I don't have any problems with that. What really pisses me off about over-the-air broadcasts is quite often they are shown inconsistently. This TV season, I have been watching Lost. I remember it was on steadily for a few episodes and then all of a sudden they started showing repeats! They started showing the new episodes a few weeks later but I missed one or two because I didn't know when the new ones were coming back. What the fuck? And I'm sure everybody here remembers the disasterous schedule (or lack thereof) that Futurama had. In these situations, you don't really have any other choice.
