I stick with fink becasue of how they install everything in/sw. This way my whole X11 environment is portable. Just tar it up and move it to another machine and it runs. No dependencies to break. My family likes kpat and a number of other X11 games. I am able to install them on my machine and with package maker (part of developer tools) I can create an installer that even my Mom can run on her new 20" iMac or my sister on her new 17" iMac. I keep multiple versions of my/sw tree depending on what I am doing. One for the family, one for my everyday X11 stuff and one for developmental stuff.
I've ported a number of Linux apps to OSX. I gone the route of creating a wrapper so it is a double click like a regular OS X app. The problem there is the environment has to be created within the.app directory and therefore gets way too big. I'm sure there is a better way. I'd probably take a look and see how the NeoOffice guys do it.
I've also created installers for X11 apps with Package Maker. I'll install everything in/sw so it is compatible with fink (usuall just add --prefix=/sw to the./configure). I also create a symbolic link in the postflight script to the Applications folder and set the app to open within X11. This way it is almost transparent to the user (almost except the little arrow on the icon) that it is an OSX app. The preflight script check to make sure X11 is installed and exits with a message if it is not. I have been toying with doing a curl of the X11 app from Apple and installing it via command line via the preflight script if it is not installed. I have done it and it works I'm just not sure how Apple would feel about auto installing one of their applications without user intervention.
Even more impressive is the new 403 GHz record set on 21-Dec-2004
Details of QSO:
Dec 21, 2004 at 01:27z WA1ZMS/4 worked W4WWQ/4 on a frequency of 403GHz over a distance of 1.4km.
W4WWQ/4 was located at: N37-21-13.7 W79-10-15.0
WA1ZMS/4 was located at: N37-21-24.3 W79-11-11.1
The weather at the time of the QSO was:
Temp: -7.8C
Dew Point: -18.9C
Relative Humidity: 41%
Station pressure: 1000mb
These weather conditions reslted in an atmospheric loss of 3.46dB/km.
The gear used for this QSO was the same gear used previously on 241/322/403 GHz. Signals were very weak on the W4WWQ end, while several dB of margin existed on the WA1ZMS end. The exchange had to be sent several times for W4WWQ to copy the CW by ear.
This new QSO exceeds our former DX of 0.5km as well as conquers the 1km barrier for amateur frequencies above 400GHz (except for visible light).
Don't mind if I do. Just keeping it real. How much money did any of these people give to the last hurricane that hit the US, or the last earthquake, or to the people devistated by Mt. St. Helen? I'm willing to wager that my tax dollars alone (that are currently going to them) are probably more that thier whole country gave to us in the last 10 years. Quid Pro Quo?
I'm just tired of working my ass off to help the rest of the world become a better place when there are so many problems I see right outside my door.
I'm all for helping out, but I believe my money should be spent first in my community then in my country. I'm tired of seeing my hard earned money go to other countries who frankly could care less about me or my country. As I mentioned in my other comment, how much aid did these people give the Floridians this past year? I'd like to be disproved but I bet the number is a big fat goose egg.
Personally I think the US should get out of world politics. Even when we help with the best intentions all we hear from the rest of the world is how bad the US is and we should keep our noses out of everyone's business. Fine, let people be tortured and killed by their governments. Let them starve if Africa. At this point I'm so disgused I could really give a rats ass.
You are so wrong, I am currently the Director of MIS for United Way. Not only do I work for peanuts but I am a leadership giver (read pledges over $1000/yr). In addition I am a ham radio operator/Red Cross member and run the local ARES net as well as serving as the AEC for my town. Bottom line is at this point in my life, my days and weekends (much to the dismay of my wife and kids) are spent doing public service for little or no pay.
The difference is I work very hard to make my community better. I'm all for donating money and helping out fellow Americans in need. I'm curios at to how much aid Thialand provided to the people of Florida during the disasters they experienced this past year.
Pleeeze, when someone from another country comes to my aid I'll change my mind. When I lost my job a few years ago no one wanted to step up and help me as the bank was preparing to forclose on my house. I lost everything including my 401K. Had I not had a job offer a week before court, I would have been homeless. Next time I see someone in that kind of situation I'll give you a call so you can send them a big fat check!
That is what we are all doing as the government is sending/spending MY tax dollars to help them. Personally I'd prefer to see them go to people in the US that live in poverty. Do you really think these people we are going to help give a shit about the US? I doubt it. More like thanks for all the free aid assholes.
Not true, as long as the protocol is published it is OK to use. No encryption (WEP) and 100W are the only limit. The 100W limit is becasue it is spread spectrum. Other wise you can run 1500W on 2.4GHz if you want!
Both stations were using DB6NT transverters, with DB6NT 30mW Power Amplifiers as both PA's and LNA's, Micro-Mechanik 47GHz Image Filters, 12" dishes, and 144Mhz IF's.
Unlikely that you have been using Mac's 'since the original'. The original Mac had 128k of ram the 'Fat Mac' had 512k. Off the top of my head I think the first one with 1Mb of ram was the Mac Plus.
fixk has some of it right. But also, if I can't use HF for my hobby I am not going to keep my gear around. On to ebay it goes. So when the local BPL interference is gone there will not be any Hams with the equipment to operate.
What you may not realize is that I am a emergenct coordinator for my town. We Hams run monthly drills and participate in events like the NYC Marathon, Special Olympics and other large scale events. This is always done at our own expense as we can not accept any money. If we can't enjoy our hobby there is NO incentive to continue to provide the public service we do. So when something happens don't look for us to pull your ass out of the fire.
I have had line noise from existing power lines. Try to get your electric company to come out and fix it is practically futile. You have to track down the noise youself (not really my responsibility) to a pole or poles and then call the electric co and tell them something like: I'm Joe consumer and I see blue sparks coming out of pole 123.
When they come to investigate hopefully they will find the cracked insulator that was causing the problem. Not really the best way to go about it but it is the only one that seems to work. Now they run BPL. I call up the electric co and say your causing interference on 28 MHz. They laugh and say, 'we'll get to it'. Then only until I spend the time and energy filing a complaint with the FCC do I maybe get some action.
But that's OK, becasue when I move up to 2.4 GHz and I'm running 1500W and no wireless network or cordless phones for 10 miles are working it will be your turn to try to track down the interference and fight the fight. And by the way, since I have a primary allocation there and your devices have to accept the interference the FCC is not going to do squat for you.
Let's see if we can close that hole. If BPL does come and it makes HF unenjoyable then I (and many others) would probably sell my HF gear. Why have $2K radios collecting dust if I can't enjoy them. I'll do microwave and other modes not affected by BPL noise.
So we look down the road a few years, Ham's have all but abondoned HF, BPL is everywhere provided porn and spam to all. Then the attack comes. There is no BPL causing interference. There are also no (or a limited amount of) Hams out there to run the emergency comms. That is my original point.
Hmm, did I see you down at the World Trade Center site during 9/11 and the following weeks? Didn't think so. Us Ham radio operators (I came in from Connectucut) were down their providing communications in 24/hr shifts. I provided over 48 hours of service. If you were not so ignorant as to what we do and who we provide service for you wouldn't be so quick to open your mouth.
Now imagine there was some kind of full scale attack on the US where multiple cities were affected. Phones are out, cells are out (or like during 9/11 useless) forget the Internet and your lucky to even have electricity. Hams are no longer operating on HF because some short sited people, who are more concerned with their stock investments, got BPL pushed through. Who is going to provide not only local but long distance communications? You?
Let's see, is the Squeezebox also a 802.11 base station? A $150 base station that fits in your pocket with the added benefit of the music streaming. Seems like a better deal than the Squeezebox to me.
Go over to Davis Instruments and buy yourself a Car Chip. It plugs into the ERSII port and will decode all the computer codes. It will also reset the computer if you want it to. It is a great little device and if you search around you can find them for sale for about what it would cost you for one visit to the dealer for a leaking gas cap!

Actually he should have said amateur radio satellite. Just remember these sats were built by ham radio operators not governments or big corporations. They are built by donations from other hams on shoe string budgets. Check out http://www.amsat.org . There are two new birds being built now that we are trying to pay for and get up in the air.

What are you talking about? You can export to mp3 and burn right to a CD. How are you locked in?

Hmm, maybe we need to do some investigation. What are the names of the images in question?

If your a ham why are you afraid to sign your message without your name not to mention your call?
Hams also use UHF, SHF and higher. Recently there was an 81 mile QSO on 47 GHz with 30 mW!
WB2BYP was located in FN02vu and K2LDU/VE3 was located in FN04xa. The distance of this QSO was 81 miles/131km. As I have the Lat/Lon info, it is:
FN04xa: 44 01' 11.3" / 78 00' 09.2"
FN02vu: 42 51' 10.4" / 78 12' 25.2"

OEM less than $39 for 1000 units. Development kits for $199

They already bought RAV why would they need Symantec. RAV was a great product for Linux. Too bad MS killed it, no big surprise though...

Buckeye,
You spend too much time using Microsoft products it seems. It is the International Space Station.
But I do agree with your comment that: "I feel the IIS is just not very useful. " And I'm not talking about the ISS.
