  1. Moonbounce/EME or FTA sattelite on Fun To Be Had With a 10-Foot Satellite Dish? · · Score: 1

Just get you Amateur Radio license and start bouncing signals off of the moon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EME_(communications) http://www.nitehawk.com/rasmit/ws1_1.html An other option is watching "free to air" FTA TV channels. If you like to channel surf just Google FTA receiver. A good receiver plus C-Band (or C/Ku) LNB will cost about $200.

So the Dutch police will be on the lookout for anybody close to the voting locations with an antenna sticking our of their pocket ;)

  3. Yes but...... on Do You Still Find Amateur Radio Interesting? · · Score: 1

It totally depends. There is still a lot of experimentation going on in Amateur Radio. The problem as I see it in the US is that there are a lot of "islands" of activity. Most US Hams I come across are too involved in their own world and will take a long time to accept outsiders.

For example here in Palm Beach County, FL. There is a reasonable active packet group but most of the equipment still runs on 1200 baud and some links are on 9600 baud. In Europe 76K2 Baud is almost the norm with some links even running as fast as 1M5 baud!
I suggested experimenting with higher speeds but no one here wants to help.

Another great opportunity for experimentation is Digital Amateur Television. Again in Europe there have been several D-ATV repeaters that have been active for years while here in the US D-ATV is just starting.

    In conclusion:
Do I still find Amateur Radio interesting? Yes, but it depends on where you live and what other Amateur Radio operators are doing around you.

    From the ARRL website:

The effort, called the Commemorative 9/11 Net, is being spearheaded by Len Signoretti, N2LEN, of Brooklyn, New York. N2LEN's 440.050 MHz (CTCSS 114.8 Hz) internet-linked repeater covers the Greater New York City area. The linkup will rely on either EchoLink or eQSO Internet software connections. Signoretti said his UHF machine is used as a central hub to coordinate EchoLink and eQSO, so users on each can communicate. The net will attempt to interconnect repeaters in all 50 US states as well as in many other countries around the world.

Amateurs can download free EchoLink or eQSO software from the Internet. While there is no listen-only capability on the Internet, many local VHF and UHF repeaters are expected to take part in the commemorative linkup.

The Commemorative 9/11 Net is scheduled to get under way at 8 PM Eastern Daylight Time (0000 UTC September 12) on the EchoLink and eQSO servers and could run as long as two hours. Haynie (ARRL President) is scheduled to address the cyberspace and RF-linked gathering at around 9 PM EDT.

    2) Sattelite. I don't think AmSats are WiFi enabled yet.
    3) Moon Bounce. Aim your antennas toward the moon and hope some of your signal makes it back.
