Who said it was a critical system? Critical systems weren't even connected to the internet where I was. Or it could be an inside job?

Where are the TV ads and radio spots?

Microsoft has an entire half hour infomercial billed as a real show on TechTV. It is under the same 'Microsoft Insider' banner as the MS 'switch' ads.

"...whatever the FBI is prepared to pay..."

    From the article:
BayTSP is paid anywhere from $200 to $50,000 per month by owners of intellectual property -- primarily software companies, movie studios, and record companies -- to find who is illegally copying, distributing, or helping to distribute without permission their intellectual property.

    Bold emphasis mine.
So it's not the FBI footing the bill, at least to this company.

The comment I sent in was copy-pasted from a Slashdotter who expressed my views both politely and concisely. I added my own comments stating that I was not the original author AND that I hoped the court would check to see how many of the submissions were from the deceased. It will be interesting to see if they consider me a troll.

  9. Re:Similarity on EPIC Urges State AGs to Pursue Microsoft Passport · · Score: 1
Thanks for the roadmap to delete my account. In addition to requesting the answer to my 'secret' question and other identifying info, they also sent me this:

Please note that deleting your Passport means:

    - You will not be able to use your Passport to sign in to any partner sites using Passport security, nor will you be able to access your user data at any of those sites.

    - You will not be able to use your Passport wallet at express purchase sites, either for new purchases or to follow up on any previous purchases.

    - If your Passport is the designated parent of one or more Kids Passports, these will also be deleted.

Therefore, I suggest that before you send us this information and I delete your account, that you:

    - Sign into all the Passport partner sites that you use and clear out any personal data they may have.

    - Delete all credit card information from your Passport wallet. Deleting this information will close your Passport wallet account. To do this, go to:

    http://wallet.passport.com

    - Sign out of Passport before you request the deletion of your account.

I'm sure glad I only used the account once (for XP RC1/RC2) otherwise I would have to go around to every place I had ever used Passport and delete my information. Seems to me the Passport is only useful when signing UP for something, not when you're trying to opt out. If centralization is so wonderful, why doesn't deleting my account delete my information everywhere?

Hedge your bets. Write a nice little note like this and insert it into the liner notes.

"Hi there, I am the previous owner of this CD. If you bought this CD thinking it was new, guess again. I returned this CD to [the store I bought it from] because it is defective and will not play in many CD players and computers. I suggest you do the same. And while you're returning it, ask them how this note got into your shrink wrapped CD."

"Fortunatly we were both able to explain how our code worked."

I think you've hit on something there. From my experience, working with classmates and as a tutor, the people most likely to copy code are also the most likely not to be able to explain how it works. I've spent hours helping someone on an assignment, making them /* comment their code */ every step of the way, and the next day it's like greek to them again.

Of course, this doesn't account for the people that 'get it' but are just too lazy to do all the typing.

Actually, defective software was blamed for the deaths of several people back in 80's in a case known as the Therac-25 Accidents. To make a long story short, a programmer screwed up some code in the software that controlled radiation dosage for cancer patients. No one double-checked the code and the company was held responsible. Nasty stuff.
