well, 10.2.0 had it on my G4, since I got it the day it came out and installed it on my G3, my desktop G4, and my Titanium.

But QuartzExtreme worked on the stock AGP Rage128 on my 450mhz G4.
Proof is that the cursor had the dropshadow. That's how you tell it's working, right?
Maybe Rage128 just had minor support?
I DO know that Jaguar ran MUCH on my 450mhz G4 than my 450mhz G3. I assume mostly due to altivec optimisations, but also because of the graphics processing being done by the GPU.

The only instances when I've found translucency to be useful are:
1. When I'm stuck on my powerbook with 1 monitor and I need to be able to see a webpage or source file when I'm coding and there isn't enough desktop realestate for all of the open windows.
2. When you want some kind of floating data. ie- uptime or load averages or whatever that are floating above everything or stuck on the desktop... like a screen tattoo (like that program stattoo by Panic
any other use (translucent menus, translucent window borders, translucent desktop rubberband select, etc) is just eyecandy. Which makes using the computer a little more fun... so long as it doesn't impede on your productivity... like when you try to run OSX on a 300mhz G3.

Max OS X have had GPU supportet transparency since Panther, through Quartz Extreme. Prevoiusly, it was all done on the CPU
Actually, Quartz Extreme was introduced in Jaguar (10.2), and that requires at least an AGP Rage128 Videocard.
also, the OP said that he spent at least $50 per. Which probably doesn't include shareware (except maybe ambrosia is charging that much now? I think EV was 35$, maybe.)...
You may say "games", I have bought 20 games this year alone at $50 or more a pop for my DP PowerMac G5
what games?
I can't even name 20 computer games I enjoyed playing enough to buy in history. I think I may have only bought 20 in my life. What 20 games have come out for the mac that are worth buying the last year?!
I mean, the only games that come to mind is the new unreal tournament (2004? I think?) and, maybe WoW or Warcraft3...
The only computer games I still play are Quake1, Quake3 and Starcraft. And the only game that's come out in the last couple years that I would buy is Halflife2 (if it came out for mac). Generals looked good, and I finally got a machine that can run it (dual 2.7ghz G5 from an 800mhz G4), but after 20 minutes, I was bored.
but seriously, what 20 games could you have possibly gotten?! I'm genuinely curious.
I saw minibosses in Brooklyn over the summer (opened for Eagles of Deathmetal, I think). AWESOME SHOW.
I also saw Mr. Bungle at Snocore in 1999 in Asbury Park, NJ. Fucken awesome show, too. I had heard of them before that, but never heard their music. I was blown away.
It plays american games fine. American PSPs play Japanese games fine, too.
Japanese PSPs don't play american movies, though. I can't play spiderman. But the UMD movie feature is 90% worthless in my eyes. Espeically since I have 2 512MB memorysticks.
I love uninformed comments. =P
(aside: I bought the japanese PS2 when it first came out for 900$).
Please stop posting news about the Japanese only PSP.
Why?
Slashdot is news for nerds. Nerds buy things as soon as they come out. What makes you think that the majority of slashdot readers with PSPs didn't buy them before the US release?
I, for one, got my PSP on January 3rd. There were several sites that had them available for an acceptable price. I paid 315$ for mine including shipping AND it came with a game. Although it didn't come with the memorystick or strap or any of the cool stuff. Still, it was a great deal, especially considering that I got it 3 months before everyone else.
Although I'm pissed I upgraded my firmware. Luckily, all my other friends who got their japanese PSPs didn't upgrade their firmware, so I can test out a lot of these hacks.
you (and a couple other people) are completely missing my point.
the thought of the HEADACHES involved with such a drastic processor chipset change is what bothers me.
The problems that the change is going to cause... developer relations (ie- they just had to rewrite all their software to work properly in OSX, now they're gonna have to rewrite it again for, possibly, a completely new processor) namely.
It's a good thing I write most of my software to work on multiple platforms and test it on different chipsets. Unless you've developed software for x86 AND PPC (who cares about the OS), you would have no idea about what problems are involved, especially when reading and writing long integers to files and over a network. (read: endianness)
sure, you've got ntohl() and htonl() functions, but they don't help when your source data is little-endian (goddamn PSP!).
I inherited that machine when the digital prepress shop I worked at went under. The guy who used that machine stuck the sticker on there as a joke when we first installed the NT server.
No, it's not running OSX server. Yes, it's running Linux. Yes, it's running Gentoo.;)
I've got nothing against the x86 platform. I say that on a regular basis. My beef with PCs is M$, not that they are non-apple.
My physically ill part is in regard to all the headaches that will ensue because of the shift and the possible problems that it's going to cause software developers.
Also, I hate it when apple, or anyone else for that matter, invest so much time into something only to drop it for something else. After shoving this "G5s are the fastest chips on earth" crap down my throat, they're gonna jump to some other platform?
I compare this to your mom getting a sex change after birthing you.
Did they outright say that Mac OS would be on x86, or just on an Intel chip? If it's on a non-x86 Intel chip
Reading this news made me physically ill. The last time I was this nauseated after reading an article was when Microsoft bought Bungie, my favourite videogame company.
After thinking about it, I realized the same thing. TFA didn't say that apple was switching to Pentium or Xeon or any other x86 processor, just intel branded chips. It's entirely conceivable that either Intell will create a new PPC chip (although how they'll crank one out in a year is beyond me), create a new chip altogether (again, in one year?!), or simply piggyback Altivec onto one of their existing designs (i dunno how good of an idea that is).
I suppose it's most likely that Intel will pop out a mutant chip that resembles something like the bastard child of their current crop of high-performance x86 processors and the current G5; a chip with extra registers, the Altivec vector unit (or multiple units), and some extra instructions (like that spiffy sqrt instruction that the G5 has).
I guess the only thing left to say is "don't knock them until you've got the details."
But I really don't think this is good news at all. I see dark clouds on the horizon.
generally, modern game programmers don't program the games in ASM, as you pointed out...
Also, you have to keep in mind that the 3 proicessors aren't the same. You've got the Cell in the PS3 (which has a completely different architecture than any other chip with it's multiple vector units and whatnot), and the G5 in the Xbox360.
i'm not sure if the Xbox is going to do any modifications to the G5 to lean it more towards highperformance gaming, so it may be very similar to a stock G5.
You also have to be aware that every console is going to have its own APIs for programming the games' logic and physics and whatnot. Different graphics chips in each system, too, so different rendering calls for programming their own shaders.
i don't think we'll ever have a unified gaming architecture between different branded consoles. If that was the case, the console war winner would be either the console who had the highest quality graphics and/or was the cheapest (m$ could win this on every front). Game exclusivity could also be a plus.
There has been some wonderful reworked orchestral and piano adaptations of these things. I'm more interested in finding those - good that they're releasing some of those as well.
Well, there are tracks by the Black Mages... kinda like metal adaptions... kinda not... I guess they're kinda linkin parkish...
We did banners for "Nintendo World Rockefellar Center May 14th 1-5pm" banners at work a couple weeks ago. I was googling and everything for info on it and couldnt' find anything.

and IE for mac hasn't been updated in at least that many years.
Hell, I haven't used it since Camino came out and was usable (back when it was called Chimera).

reason #21 why i hate myself for upgrading my Jap PSPs firmware :(
ditto.
Is there any way to roll back the firmware? Or has anyone managed to rip the 1.0 firmware into an updater? That'd be badass.
I mean, with everyone having code running on the thing, surely someone's figured out a way to read the firmware.

Look at the problems with SACD and DVD-A.

I also fully expect all four picto chat rooms to be full and populated with representations of male genitalia.
the real trick would be to broadcast pictochat graphics from a laptop to all the rooms with spam advertisements for viagra and the like.
Even better would be the Nigerian scam... pictochat style.
