Alright, so say I leave an FTP server running. I use this to distribute files back and forth between myself and other college people for the normal purpose of class materials. I also leave guest access on so that I don't have to deal with log ins etc. Does that give them the right to scan my port and computer?
But if a cop is comming in to investigate whether or not your are selling illegal goods, they have to state that. And more often than not, they need probable cause to get a warrent to conduct the search to begin with.
Do you realize one of the provisions in the law (if I recall correctly from my political science class) is that while a cop or other law enforcement person could attend or visit any public meeting or gathering, they can not "gather evidence" with out a warent. The only thing they can do explicity is make an arrest for a crime that they witness being commited, not for one that has the potential to be commited.
So let's try this one on for size then. Person A has timbuktu or other remote desktop app open on their machine so that they can access the machine from work. Person B finds this computer and notices that the Timbuktu port is open. If they access Person A's computer and go through the files etc etc etc, can person B still be charged with hacking? By your logic they can't.
WHY does everyone treat the internet as if it is some other world? Its the same world we live in. The laws are just as easy to break and uphold there. Yet we treat it as some sort of wild west. We do not need MORE law to tell us it is wrong to copy crap.
I've been saying that for a long long time. Problem is, to the rest of the world, the net is still a magical thing.
It wouldn't suprise me if it came out of Japan. THey seem to have things pretty well figured out. A high sense of respect among people and an openness about life in general.
100% of all child molestors have consumed bread at one point in theri life, it is therefore imperative that we lock up all people you have consumed bread before they harm an innocent child.
Who thinks that language has different and appropriate forms for different settings.
School papers of the research type are written with proper english, no contractions and no slang or dialouge. Sentence structure is formal and dry, and often if there is a long way of saying something, the long was is used (i.e So, in conclusion" as compared to "Therefore")
School papers of the creative writing style are written according to to paper and the context. Speech is written as speech, narration is written as proper english, maybe with contractions as appropriate.
Speech, is varried depending on the situation, and it's acceptability arround the present company.
Online talk is delegated into two sections:
1)Serious ideas and posts, written similar to a school paper.
2) Chat and shorthand used for joke posts (like the 1337 Lord's Prayer that was classic), and chats between friends.
Does windows have a reliable scripting language? I had to do a simmilar process for someone who had switched from AOL to another dial-up service on their mac. THe problem was easily solved by opening Apple Script and having it record the events nessesary to launch and activate the connection and browser. It was then a simple matter of setting the script to run when doubleclicked and replacing the script icon with the web browser icon. Deavtivation was another script except with a modfed icon (I love ResEdit). Is a simmilar feat possible under windows? If so where, I would love to have a scripting program on this sucker.
I've lost many many hours of productivity to getting linux to run nicely on many different machines. I hope that it's improved somewhat, however, I will be waiting for my second harddrive and then installing QNX (www.qnx.com) to play arround with that for a while. Besides, I can't get rid of XP entirely yet, because Haxial (www.haxial.com) doesn't have a linux version of KDX yet (they need I think 20 people to buy it and give them an email with the purchase that they would also like a linux version).
I fully agree that Ep2 was much better than Ep1. Infact, it had me looking forward to Ep3. It had the feel of the original movies, but it was still missing something. True the characters had more motives in this one, but it still didn't seem nearly as well done as the first trilogy. And like I said, Lucas has lost that detailed nitty gritty things look like they would work look and abandonned it for shiny new eye cady for a lot of things. Granted this is before the OT, there's lot's more money floating about, but some of the new designs and ideas are too out there for what the OT had in mind. True there is more subtlety in how the politics of things are playing into the system, but it's not quite the tale most of us were expecting. However, I have highhopes for Ep3 as I think the disasterous Ep1 was merely a nessesary evil.
Windows works right out of the box! In fact, most Windows installations are running without any updates!
Really? Then explain this. I installed XP to my computer.
1) Soundcard broke. 2) Created a user account that I did not have previously on my computer (has since been disabled) 3) Windows update pops up and asks me to install *VITAL* security updates. To date I have 12 windows hotfixes installed. And this computer has only been running for 3 weeks. 4) Also note that windows has decided it will no longer play nice with my router, and does not handle the DHCP rollovers.
Doesn't work out of the box for me, and this has been one of my better windows experiences. My friend's laptop will not disply his computer on the desktop (Explorer says it's there, but it's not). Lovely stuff. When my iBook comes back from the shop (nasty run in with water and a power cord) it will once again become my primary machine and I will use my PC only for the stuff that I need to do involving Maple (since it was easy enough to get off of Kazza)
How is it mac sarcasm? Yeah the wording is sensational, but how else would this get front page on slashdot? "New Drives burn out, patch availible but not easily." Doesn't quite make for front page on slashdot.
But the thing about the original films was that they had a believeable flow. There was an empire and giant evil machine with drones to do their bidding. There were the remnants of the Jedi, calmly biding their time until the events allowed Luke to be brought into his own and hopefuly push forward and bring them back from near extinction. There were the Rebels, a small on the run group constantly trying to stay one step ahead of the empire. Hit and run attacks, going for weak points instead of all out brute force. And then there was the rest of the world. They didn't like the control they were under, but they didn't have a lot of say, so they just lived on. The worlds had believeability, the machines had believeability. The big energy guns had big cables, the ships and switches and dials and buttons, not just lights on a pannel. The problem with the new star wars movies is things aren't believeable, there are no motives, just actions.
And had a shit load of luck thrown in with it. I don't have a link, but there is a great site out there with a list of all the lucky breaks that Bill got before windows that made it possible for him to get there. There's nothing wrong with hating the lucky, so long as you don't act on it.
Has the california and texas senators been bought yet?

I still say we should take the subscription money from slashdot and buy ourselves a senator or two. I would definately subscribe for that.

That's why you need a real calculator like the TI-105 or whatever they're up to now.

I would, but the college uses maple and sends the assignments as maple worksheets.

I wonder if it would install through VPC. Might be fun to try.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the code:
while (dvdburning==fire)
{
burncds
}
buydvdburner

"10-4, the new copy protection works. Send in the clean up crew"
Meh, auto parts don't do much better. Firestone anyone?

I think mine would be insulted if I valued her at only 40,000,000....

I think they need to come up with a way to bring in the surviving monty python members.
