Mac OS X 10.2.1 Released
benh57 writes "Via Software Update: 'The 10.2.1 Update delivers enhancements and improvements to the following applications, technologies and components: Mail, Image Capture, Help Viewer, graphics, printing, networking, Rendezvous, Kerberos, USB, FireWire, SCSI device compatibility and includes additional Digital Hub peripheral device support.' Full details available in the KB Article that was previously leaked (not yet back up, currently)." Also separately available via Software Update is iTunes 3.0.1.
...that Apple is starting to use the OSS major.minor.teeny versioning system--looks like they really are making every effort to also appeal to hackers.
Slashdot: Where people pretend to be twice as smart as they really are by behaving like children.
Since this is only a minor update, vs. a full-blown 'upgrade', the patch will only cost $4.50.
The readme still isn't available, but Mac OS Rumors has the KB article that was previously available :

All movements for social change begin as missions, evolve into businesses, and end up as rackets.
Apple have been doing this long before open source was vogue.
Go and look at their old OS version numbers.
Keep up the good work. I believe in you.
Windows installations are running without any updates!
Yes, if you use a REAL operating system, you can get a visit from the REAL operating system hax0rs, I'm sure.
Software Update defaults to checking weekly for an update, so a lot of people might not have found out about it for a few days at least. This update has been rumored for 2-3 days now, and I for one found out it was finally released because of this article.

Besides, the article is in the Apple section, so it's not bothering any

I for one don't run OSX and have no plans to, but I like to read about it. I don't mind having this on /.'s front page at all.
Thank you for your support. :)
Hey, finally the "real operating system" guy is back! Cool!
An OS is a living and constantly evolving being(unlike *certain humans*), therefore it is going to be continually updated. A Modern OS is modular, so this is not a path, but rather, just another piece to make it more complete. So be happy, download it, and enjoy the ride!
I installed that puppy right away, instead of after the usual cautious waiting period, because I've been having such troubling difficulties with 10.2 (far fewer panics than 10.1.x, but a tendency for USB-connected outboard-DAC audio from iTunes to lose sync and get into a chronic stuttering mode, and uselessness of 39160-connected SCSI drives).
I haven't had a chance yet to test for the previous difficulties, but a brand-new booboo emerged when I rebooted after the upgrade: a volume I have on an ACARD 6880M (a two-disk hardware mirror) is being mounted twice. It looks (on very preliminary investigation) as if maybe one volume being seen is the mirror, and the other is one of the underlying disks of the mirror; but maybe I'm seeing both underlying disks and not the mirror. Either way, it kind of bites, and I think I'm going to have to run explicitly on a single disk until this is resolved.
Maybe it's my fault -- somewhere in there I loaded up the version 1.3 kext from ACARD in place of the (dated earlier, but numbered later) 1.4 version which came with Jagwire. Or maybe nobody ever tests mirroring, because all the kids want to do is stripe. Sigh.

I agree, and the wierd thing is, when I went into Software Update to have it check for these updates, it was off on both of the computers I just updated to 10.2. It was always on by default before with 'weekly' checking, and I didn't turn it off - so I might not have know until I saw news about it, or had I decided to check my software update at some point and realized it was disabled....
> In fact, most Windows installations are running without any updates!
Tell that to all the hapless winXP users who never turn off auto-update (on by default).
It's not on the front page (unless you have your preferences set to display all Apple articles there).
Move along, no sig to see here.
its good to see apple updating their OS. maybe 10.2 wont have as many problems as 10.1 had.

yay, slashdot is not boring any more
I was trying to check earlier today, but the servers were down.

..."but a tendency for USB-connected outboard-DAC audio from iTunes to lose sync and get into a chronic stuttering mode"
Interesting. In 10.2, I've experienced similar audio stuttering with my SoundSticks while using iTunes and DVD Player. It's reasonably rare, and I haven't experienced for a few week, but it's still annoying.
Seems there are some USB audio issues in 10.2...
Oh, I wouldn't go as far as that.
Sigh...I miss VMS I think. DCL was a brilliant scripting language and i made a fat living off the system crashes.

That's right! Most WinDOH!s installations are running without updates! Boy it sux to be those people.
About working out of the box... that is left to opinion. I had to reinstall not one week after getting my new computer.
And while we're all updating our OS X boxes, I think it only fair to tell WinDOH!s users that a very bad hole is available for exploit in XP (again? didn't they fix those?). WinDOH!s users should update their box asap at windows update especially if you are one of the few, the brave, the un-updated.
How far would you go?
The GAROS Guy will go all the way....he has a nice ass, but I hear he's tight with it.
Windows works right out of the box! In fact, most Windows installations are running without any updates!
Really? Then explain this. I installed XP to my computer.
1) Soundcard broke.
2) Created a user account that I did not have previously on my computer (has since been disabled)
3) Windows update pops up and asks me to install *VITAL* security updates. To date I have 12 windows hotfixes installed. And this computer has only been running for 3 weeks.
4) Also note that windows has decided it will no longer play nice with my router, and does not handle the DHCP rollovers.
Doesn't work out of the box for me, and this has been one of my better windows experiences. My friend's laptop will not disply his computer on the desktop (Explorer says it's there, but it's not). Lovely stuff. When my iBook comes back from the shop (nasty run in with water and a power cord) it will once again become my primary machine and I will use my PC only for the stuff that I need to do involving Maple (since it was easy enough to get off of Kazza)

Well, let's just say I never praise Slashdot on a first date.
For the PC Maple user: Get Mathematica for OS X!!!:)
Due to security reasons, Apple defaults to not automatically check for updates.
:)
Why it overwrote your previous prefs, I don't know. Maybe they were just being extra sure.
Anyone else experience this? New mail is a generic-iconed app, doesn't do anything when double-clicked. To add another level of dumb, Apple doesn't seem to have a standalone installer .pkg for Mail. Smart.
I would, but the college uses maple and sends the assignments as maple worksheets.

I know whenever someone claims "it just feels faster", people jump on them saying it's merely the pre-binding, the cleared RAM, whatever. But let me tell you, this update really does make things faster. How do I know? I just bought this dual 1GHz g4, and everything was just pre-bound, and I've been adding new software, so my RAM gets cleared plenty.
Window moving, web pages loading, even photoshop. This computer is even quicker than before. I swear.
It seems that this new upgrade has some issues with powerbooks G4, after booting the keyboard and the trackpad aren't operational. Has anyone installed this update on a powerbook G4? and has anyone experienced such problems?
I swear it. It's bleeding fast. Even on slashdot! Especially on image-heavy pages. It renders like a champ, or even *shrug* the windows-version.
Thank you Apple! Jaguar is even more impressive now!
Now go fix the finder FTP-implementation.

If you Really need Maple I beleave there is a Linux Version of it. And I would get rid of XP on your PC put Linux on and use XDarwin with ssh so you dont loose the productivity of the PC.
Every application still crashes when I try to print.
(Dual 800 G4, HPLJ4MV)
I haven't installed 10.2 yet and they already have a patch! Now that's fast. I wonder when the G5's are coming out? lol...
What do you people do to X?
Maybe I'm just a low-level user who watches DVDs, rips/burns CDs, imports/ edits movies/pictures, runs mySQL databases and serves them using PHP and Apache, creates large graphics/illustrations in illustrator, and runs the occassional buggy hand-written C code to do some simulations, but I have NEVER had any kernel panics and I've been on board since X.0.
What is the secret? How can I get my machine to have a kernel panic without abusing it????
I've lost many many hours of productivity to getting linux to run nicely on many different machines. I hope that it's improved somewhat, however, I will be waiting for my second harddrive and then installing QNX (www.qnx.com) to play arround with that for a while. Besides, I can't get rid of XP entirely yet, because Haxial (www.haxial.com) doesn't have a linux version of KDX yet (they need I think 20 people to buy it and give them an email with the purchase that they would also like a linux version).

My XDarwin no longer works with the 10.2.1 update. It doesn't report any problems via the console log (sure would be nice if I could turn on verbose or debug [or maybe I mean it would be nice if the option would spit out from -help]), just the usual startup followed by 'Quitting XDarwin'.
I reinstalled XFree86 + the 10.2 patch. No joy...
Anyone else?
Trust me. This is an inactive account. Regardless of what the
Did anyone else notice this?
It seems that all of a sudden my Intellimouse Explorer magically became functional; back and forward buttons that I had pretty much forgotten about are now actively doing their jobs. :)
Thanks, Apple. I was getting tired of waiting for MS to get their act together.
I don't have Mail.app anymore, so as an example file, Backup.app must do for now. :)
.app-Folders and look for "Info.plist". Inside that XML-File it finds
If an updater finds multiple files named "Backup.app" it could dig into the
<key>CFBundleIdentifier</key>
<string>com.apple.Backup</string>
and
<key>CFBundleShortVersionString</key>
<string>1.1</string>
Now all the installer has to know is, which version(s) of the files with the right Bundle Identifier string can be updatet.
Does anybody know what the iTunes update is and why it requires a reboot? Should I be getting worried by a seemingly tighter integration of apps with the OS?
Yes! A Real Operating System. Windows! Windows is cool; and by cool, I mean totally sweet. There are no updates for it today! That's what I call Real Ultimate Power!!! In fact Windows is sooooo sweet I want to crap my pants.
(Just ask Mark!)
You like your Macintosh better than me, don't you Dave? Dave? Can you hear me Dave?
Were you having trouble with the MS driver? Mine has been working flawlessly since I downloaded it months ago. Kept working with the Jaguar initial release, too, which was a relief.
