Maybe not borrowing a cop's gun, but what about someone elses? As a condition of me carrying concealed, I have made it a point to ensure that my girlfriend and other people I go out with ona regular basis that know I carry also know how to shoot. If god forbid there's ever a reason I can't shoot, I want someone else to be able to. It's not a stituation I expect to happen, but I don't expect to get into a car crash either, that doesn't mean I don't where a seatbelt.
So often that the extra electronics in your gun will seriously lower your chance of survival for the next 50 years?
It only has to fail that one time that it happens for you to die.
But can I assume from your statement that::
1) Don't wear a seatbelt 2) Don't have ANY form of insurance 3) Don't lock your doors, EVER 4) Never took a single self defense course 5) Don't wear a helmet when riding a bike 6) Don't use surge protectors 7) Don't use a firewall 8) Don't own any fire extinguishers 9) Deactivate your airbags
Since making sure you are adequately protected from a dangerous situation is so insane to you.
It's not pointless at all. It's damage control, just like the no images/files thing probably is. While sensitive information should not be transmitted, sometimes what we consider worthless info is very useful to those that know how to do use it. If some information, maybe sensative, maybe not so much, but still useful was transmitted on an open link, anyone in between can read it. For fun with this, go sit in an airport with a packet sniffer running on the wireless network. However, if you encrypt it, at least for the durration of transmission, you've more or less guaranteed the information stays between the two ends.
Which is differnt from closed source how? Bear in mind I'm only talking about sneaky uses, but it seems to me everyone that's tried it with closed source has gotten caught too. Maybe not as fast, but they get caught, and then people avoid it.
Yes, you have to have X11 installed, but all those other steps are long gone. No need for fink, no need to explicitly start X11 etc etc. Double clicking a document to open it also works just fine.
The difference is, this is an unverified rumor that has been persistant since the day the iPod came out. This isn't an annoucement. It's not real. So the speculation is whether it could be real, and what the angle would be.
You would be suprised. When I worked at G.E. we had some laptops stolen. Not only did the employee steal them on camera, but he used his own ID badge to get into the building and through the doors.
My concern, and the reason I will probably never subscribe to satalite radio, is that it will become what cable TV has become. Though I beleive cable's marketing pitch was reduced commercials rather than no commercials, but the end result is the same, cable is loaded with commercials, literaly paying to receive advertisements. Already you can see it begining, there are people comlaining about Sirius advertising their own service on the Sirius radio. How long before mini ads pop up? Just a quick mention that "You're listening to Sirius Radio, non stop music, brought to you by Amazon.com" Then come the 30 second station breaks and so on and so forth.
Worse, this stuff already does what I dispise about cable. For one there's the service and then there's the additional services and premiums. I hate that. Then there's the fact that I can't explicitly chose what stations I subscribe to. I don't want to pay for rap, hip hop, urban and country based stations. I don't listen to them, I never will, I don't want to pay for them.
And unfortunately I don't see this getting any better any time soon.
We harvest organs from deceased volunteers and that is the important difference. As was mentioned before, prisoners on death row and various other people like coma patients are going to die (be destroyed) anyway. Why don't we make use of them?
The only thing Apple did was recognize the potential and package it in a way so that consumers and marketeers said "oh yeah, Apple found the way to successfully use/sell/popularize:"
So they innovate then? I mean lets consider this. I have an idea that will revolutionize the world, I know how to go about making a replicator (think star trek). But until I manage to package it together in a useable form, I haven't innovated anything. If you can't put it in a useable form, it doesn't matter one whit whether you thought of it first.
Personally, I want a player that doesn't require proprietary software to use
Which is why you can use any number of other softwares to manage it.
I don't want its main strength to be that it's tied to an overpriced music store that forces me to burn/crack/transcode to be used on half my audio hardware
Are you being forced to use the music store? Last I checked i wasn't.
I'll stick to eMule, my own CD collection and Foobar, for the time being).
Is there a reason you can't do that with the iPod?
Apple's offering, despite the nice physical design and great navigation, is too much bloat for way too much money in my eyes.
How is it bloated?
The problem is, their flash-based players don't require proprietary hardawre. The Zen does. And the physical design and navigation are quite bluntly just flat-out inferior to Apple's. But the lack of ITMs? In my eyes, that's a good thing.
So the competition is flat out inferrior, but because they don't offer you a choice to use a method of aquiring music, you don't like the iPod? I'm not following the logic here.
. Why do the police have to know that a child's ID badge has entered a school?
Because in most districts, if a child does not show up for school and their whereabouts can't be accounted for, the police are the ones responsible for tracking them down.
And also, where does that jurisdiction end?
When the child is no longer on school property. Hence the reader on the bus.
Hmm, most of the students I knew, including myself, went out of their way to avoid having the administration know us. Personaly, I would have rathered the RFID tags than seeing the administration everyday.
As was stated, schools are required by law to know where their students are at all times while they are under the jurisdiction of the school. This includes until and where they get off the bus. Why do you think there are assigned bus routes for children?
Probably because it's too obvious. I ran into that problem a few months ago. Version 6 of matlab for OS X had a unique problem in that one needed to start X11 and then start Matlab before it could be run, there wasn't a single command to do both. Of course, this lead to confusion on the part of our users, and so the simple and obvious solution would be to write an apple script to do it. That was the easy part:
tell Finder to open application X11 tell Finder to open application MatLab
The problem was, in the way that Matlab was setup, the helper app used to launch MatLab in the X11 environment never truely opens (it bounces in the dock for a while and then goes away having begun the true MatLab startup. The end result of this was that since Apple Script was not being notified that the application had finished opening, it was recieving an error that startup had failed and kept retrying the start. This resulted in an infinate loop of MatLab window creation.
The solution of course was to tell Apple Script that regardless of what hapens, just issue the open application command and stop caring. I spent a good hour or so digging through documentation until I finaly found how to do this, and the answer is so blaringly obvious that it makes one feel stupid when they realize they should have known it all along:
ignoring all errors tell Finder to open application MatLab
Why not? If the "crime" has already been committed and the evidence secured by seizure, what harm can come in disclosing it?
Because the evidence you have may not be enough yet, or the evidence may lead to further evidence. You never ever tip your hand until you're ready to play it.
The murder is committed, you've seized all the evidence, you've arrested your suspect - are you now not going to not tell him what he's been charged with, because if he knew it would interfere with your investigation?
Has the suspect been arested yet? Do we have all the suspects?
In this case, the data was already available to the public - it was on public servers
So then if it's already public, why does it need to be unsealed?
Personaly, it find it funny that europeans would log into America Online, but that's just me. Or is it called Europe Online across the pond, and you're all just left wondering why your email adresses are @aol?
A few years ago, I recieved a letter requesting that I stop sharing a movie or be sued. Problem was, I didn't have the movie, nor was I running the service which they claimed it was being shared on (eDonkey)

Aircrafts and hospitals have failsafes. Even a plane with no engines can still manage a relatively safe landing.
What failsafe would you build into a smart gun that wouldn't defeat the purpose of a smart gun in the first place?

None here on version 1.2.4

And I think gave a good argument why it isn't likely:
Here

But really, how would the OS know whether removing the drive at that exact moment caused an error or not?
Actualy, the laptops are rather easy to upgrade. All I did was install a peice of softare and I now have a 5 button trackpad.
The only thing Apple did was recognize the potential and package it in a way so that consumers and marketeers said "oh yeah, Apple found the way to successfully use/sell/popularize:"

Wow, ignorance is astounding:
iTunes: And Linux too
iTMS: see link above. As for restrictions, to each his own, I personaly don't find it any more restrictive than buying a CD.
iPod: ogg is unused by all except people with too much time on their hands, wma is a competitor.
I hardly call 10 hours short battery life (and thats on the old ones)
As for authorization, you are completely and uterly wrong.
