  1. 40%? on Why Offshore When Canada's Next Door? · · Score: 1

    Hmmmm, outsourcing to Canada eh? Maybe that's why I haven't had trouble finding work through the dot.bomb. :)

    Seriously though, you guys/gals must be making a butt load of money down there. I thought I was pretty comfortable with what I was making. I can easily survive in a pretty expensive city (relative to Canada) on what I make now. I live in Toronto. If my salary is 40% lower than yours then either you live in a really expensive city (New York? The Bay area?) or you guyz are overpaid :)

  3. comparisons to free cell phones on Sun Says Hardware Will Be Free · · Score: 1

    I don't think you can compare this to the whole cell phone industry.

    There's 1 HUGE difference that you guys are forgetting about. When you buy a cell phone, you already expect, (and can't use without) a subscription to a cell phone carrier. So it's already expected you're going to be paying someone $$$/mth for the cell phone service itself. In that case, why not go for the free phone?!

    Shift over to computers. Most people don't think you're even suppose to buy software. They think the cost is in the hardware. They buy a computer and then just download or copy the software. Try convincing those people that now instead of that model, you're just gonna pay us $$$/mth instead for the rest of your life. That's a lot harder than it sounds. They're going to be wondering what it is they're paying per month that they already couldn't get for free before!

    Lights = safety? Not neccesarily.

    The problem with the Bad Guy hiding in the shadows is that he has an advantage: you are illuminated, he isn't. Take away the lights, and the Bad Guy's advantage evaporates.

    Ahhh, but you need to re-read my post carefully. I said "would people *FEEL* safe ...". The general public perception is that it is safer in well lit areas. My main point was that there was too much light, so I would want to reduce the light, not take it away completely.

    So, here's the thing. Your argument is quite right if there was absolutely NO light. However, in a reduced light setting, the BadGuy now has more cover, and since he's still unsuspected, that would give him the advantage.

    In fact, I wish we didn't have so many lights on at night. I don't think we need all the lights that we do have on after the sun sets. I'd say we could do with half, it'll save a lot of energy and it'd be a lot more pleasant. Of course the flip side of this is safety. Would people feel as safe walking around downtown anymore? Probably not. Oh well. It was fun while it lasted.

    However, Mrs. Ward doesn't download music. The RIAA just comes in and bullies an ISP into giving them personal information about their customers. And in this case, the wrong one! Why is it that the RIAA can just randomly pick IPs and say, give me information about this person. Generally, programmers that program in a more structured language like Java/C have better background/training. It's not to say that there aren't great scripters.
