It's different, some things are better and some are worse, but just as much fun (I only plaed elite a few times, but it didn't seem too much different from First Ecounters--Elite III that I played to no end). It's top down with a simulator type of control, not the realistic intertia model from elite. It has a shorter learning curve and a smaller universe, you can hit most of the galaxy in a solid night's play. There are more unique missions, rather than the few "coded missions" and many template types (take this person here, assasinate that ship etc) There aren't as many upgrades for your ship but the ones you can get make it much more powerful, and they are racially specific. It has a lot more political structure more like GTA 2 with respect, as you work for a race's opponents they begin to fear and hate you.

All that said, it is very fun, and was enough to almost convince me to buy a Mac just for that one game.

It's not the administration, a government can only support a currency for a short period of time (as the British learned a while ago, and Argentina learned more recently). The reason the dollar is falling is that we never curtailed our demand for imports, but foreigners have begun to look at other places to invest their money (the two were in relative balance over the past decade) so now imported goods are becoming more expensive, exports are becoming cheaper, and investments are becoming cheaper. After a few years of the prices changing the flows will return to a blanced range and we will have a stable currency again.

None of the other soda and peroxide pastes leave the same tingle, and its no more expensive than any other branded tube.

That said, I also love Mozilla--tabbed browsing and selective scripting are such nice features.

I'll second mixed licensing. I realize that this is close to a herasy here, but it seems like there could be a license that allowed coders to share code with the code base, but got leechers to pay for their software, especially if they were commerical users. It's very generous of all of you to give me Linux and BSD and all the code behind every project in both, but how much better would all of these things be if the millions of users had to pay a small license fee. Feel free to ignore the kooky libertarian if you wish, but realize that very large corporations (Dell, Merrill Lynch, Oracle, Sun, and Conoco just to name a few)are riding on all of your backs with little benefit to you developers.

I still use google because it was the first really good search engine. You could enter in almsot anything and get really good results. I got used to searching there, and still like use it, even though I usually leave Yahoo to go search (I set up all my daily news and info on a Yahoo homepage a long time ago). Those personal pages are really the only thing that Yahoo does significantly better than other sites at least in finance its better than most of the non-free stuff.

While Yahoo is using some of its cash, most of this transaction is stock, which is pretty cheap currency. It dilutes your current owners position, but they generally don't seem to mind. Tyco made a business out of doing little more than buying companies and issuing stock for almost a decade. This probably has pretty good cash returns, Overture pulled in about $50 million in cash last year, and Yahoo is only spending $300 million in cash, which is a heck of a lot beter than the 1%-2% money market returns Yahoo was getting on the cash.
Also this is only about half their cash hoard, so they easily have enough to survive a very extended downturn. Their only major cash use is acquisitions, the core business generates cash.

I'd be mightily surprised, if there were any sales added from this whole mess. It's actually more surprising that Peoplesoft was able to do their normal amount of business this quarter. The organiziations that would be considering deploying this software could easily pay a consultant or employee to research all the competitors for a month, without adding too much to the final bill. The license, hardware, and customization costs would probably total 500k for a small job, and several million for a big job, our state's 2000 user project budget was 18 million and I think their scrapping it early after only three years, becuase it sucks. The big three are SAP (its a really long german name) Oracle, and Peoplesoft. There are many smaller usually more focused vendors, and still a few in house systems, but thats really about it.
If they did get any new business, it should have been offset by users who crapped bricks on the news that oracle would have dropped support and began plans to migrate to SAP. I really don't know what Oracle has to gain from the merger, it seems like the SAP clients are not very happy with the merger.

Most of them really enjoyed being outside, and the generally relaxed attituted there. Until the government cracked down on migrant camps, (some were pretty bad shanty towns) most orchards provided showering facilities, rest rooms, and an area for camping.
