Out of curiosity, do you know if can you combine windows' tab groups, or pull a separate window in as a tab of another window? I've periodically wanted to do this a lot more than rearranging the order of tabs.

    Thanks!

I (hopefully obviously) was kidding when referencing the Yankees as folks we dislike. The idiotic stereotypes perpetuated by otherwise intelligent people get old, though. I mean, anyone can have a good laugh at their own quirks, but I think people actually _believe_ this kind of farcical nonsense about the South.

Poor taste in voting aside, this is a great place. There are just as many extremely nice, intelligent, and wonderful people here as anywhere else. There are also just as many fuck-tards. Ours are often fundie "Christians." Your local fuck-tard results may vary.

There's plenty of ignorance, stupidity, and plain indecency to falsely color any given part of the US if you choose to see it. I myself would not live anywhere else.

I'd say (hope? certainly expect) that your experience was the exception rather than the rule.

This kind of retarded attitude discourages _computer_ literacy and distorts it into Microsoft literacy -- and often the "literacy" bit is still an overstatement.

Giving the computers in the first place is great, and in no way a disservice. Even if every single kid using them never touches Linux again, they will still be served by the exposure to variety in computing. It will help them differentiate between what a computer does and what Windows does. It helps to show that Word, IE, et al are programs, not integral parts of "the computer" in general.

There is so much more to life than basic Office functionality, as I'm sure you're already well aware. Even said basic Office awareness is aided by having a clearer understanding of the machines on which one works.

The HL-1440 is FANTASTIC, but it's discontinued! The replacement, the HL-2040, seems OK thus far (I've purchased two for the office in the last week) but it doesn't have a long-term rep yet and I don't like the fact that you can no longer get the TN-460 high-yield cartridges for them.

I'm not trying to steer anyone away from the 2040, but it hasn't proven itself. It does have a bigger brother, the 2070N, with built-in ethernet. The 2070N runs about $199, so it's pretty cheap for a new, networkable laser.

Well, I reason that way because IMHO the monitor difference is a luxury and not an essential component to at least my enjoyment of an iMac. A 17" screen is plenty big enough for me. Since it's certainly not "dinky" then I do not see how it is unreasonable not to regard a significant upgrade to it (both in size and price) as a luxury and thus something I might want to be able to keep, since it's not an integral part of the enjoyment I get from the base unit.

I do see your general point, as the original poster pointed out to me himself, that the iMac market is very similar to the laptop market where one simply has no expectation of taking components with them after the lifetime of the base unit expires. So, perhaps this limitation is something everyone can just expect and live with. However, I disagree with your implication near the end of your post that the upgrade is almost necessary. Rest assured that many folks out there can have that "dinky" 17" monitor (_especially_ those in the iMac market) and be perfectly happy.

  15. Re:iMac G5 upgrade in the future on Apple Website Points to PowerBook G5 · · Score: 1

The comparison to a laptop is probably an apt one, especially due to the markets those machines address. Someone looking at buying an all-in-one iMac likely doesn't have the expectation of keeping the monitor anyway.

So, I guess the original question was whether the 20" was worth it. I guess if you can afford it, go for it!

Enjoy your iMac. I envy it!

Others have mentioned it before, and I'm inclined to agree with them. Since you're already paying money for the LCD component of the iMac, investing that much plus $400 more into a 20" LCD that you cannot keep and use with another computer (easily -- Mac surgeons need not jump in) may not be wise.

Of course they are adorable, and I'd love to have one of either screen size.

I guess the real key with any solution is to be effective against the most blatant offenders and conservative on the unknowns to avoid scaring people.

Another good extension along these lines, though not identical, might be something that automatically looks up ratings for an online retailer from resellerratings.com or something. Might be good to instill greater faith in smaller stores at a glance or to warn people off of lesser ones.

Perhaps FireFox could examine the page you were viewing, its domain name, et al, and then compare them to the top result in a Google search for the same information. If the content was close to the same but the sites were distinct (and especially if the links were very different coming off of the page) might that not suggest a scam site? At least, a certain kind of scam site. Another flag might be JavaScript showing false URLs in the status bar on hover.

I guess that some of the criteria above might be triggered by mirror sites, but that seems like the kind of thing that might be resolved (in my uneducated opinion, so be kind) by entries in something like robots.txt on the main server -- perhaps in the form of "hey these sites are my mirrors, so don't flag them as scam sites, FireFox!".

*shrug* I'm sure there's a fatal flaw somewhere there.
