Unix & Linux Zealots use it because they like feeling superior to others. The exert their superiority by the desire to know something that others do not when it has no pratical use.
Linux is impossible to use for a good reason. If it were easy to use, these pompus asses would not use it, what would be the point when you cannot be on the fringe? What fun is knowing something that everyone else knows. . . then you cease to be special?
Ask anyone, and I have expierenced it myself, Linux and Unix machines crash more than the latest Service Packed Microsoft Windows 200 version.
Linux & Unix are free?!?! An Enterprise edition of SCO Openserver is $1300.00, Apache Red Hat Server is $1000.00. How is this free? The only free stuff is dumb ass utilities written by some 20 year old who forgot to bathe. You also might need to understand quantum mechanics to get them to run.
Linux Junkies are hiding behind their overly complex OS, hoping that it will keep their job security because nobody else wants to bother learning something that does taks Windows does much easier fact.
I do not see a real point to this application, as it has the potential to give a lot of misinformation. I think if the analysis that they are doing is on a very basic level and not taken too seriously that is OK, but I wouldn't take it as gospel.

I have been reading Spider-man for years, I can't seem to remember when he almost killed Wolverine, when and how did that happen?
Finally a review from someone who as actually "seen" the movie rather than a lot of the speculation going around. I think Taco is right on the money, this appeals to the guys that loved the comics . . . it is a dream come true.
Anyone looking to complain about the quality of the CG Spiderman is just looking to be a cynic. Lets be honest here, has anyone seen the television show from the 1970s, is that closer to reality for you?
Sure, you can always tell what is CG and what is not, but this movie has been what I have been dreaming of since I was a kid, I'll take a little "fakeness" to the CGI if it remains true to the comic . . . Spiderman doing crazy ass stuff swinging all around the city. You just can't do Spiderman without some insane special effects without being true to the comic, it will just come off looking like the mess that was the TV show.
I haven't seen the movie yet, but from the previews it looks like they have done an amazing job with the portrayal of Spiderman. This movie is going to be HUGE.
Good for people who are sick of administering propierity crap, now it will be consolidated into one shity computer . . . a universal standard of shit.
Bad for the poor people who will be stuck with these things. In the end it doesn't even matter, Dell has a lock in the PC market, and I don't see HP/Compaq's market share really going up as a result of this.
Flash may be the bane of a lot of people, but I have seen some pretty slick looking Flash sites out there (design & astheticlly wise HTML canot touch it for WEB). Others may not like something, but for some it is a great thing, this is just wrong.
Look, I DID know what I was getting into, I thought I was joining into this great alternative to Windows. My point is that it IS IN NO WAY SHAPE OR FORM an alternative to Windows. How do you expect people to release themselves from the grip of microsoft when we are all too "dumb" to do it ourselves (or so you say). That is why it will never be accepted! I shouldn't have to "know what I get into", if it is too COMPLEX for me than what other choice do I have than to use the ease of Windows.
Also I know I am not too stupid. I am a network admin for a pretty large company in Ohio, I have a few years with Windows, and I thought it would be nice to learn Linux
Also I know for a fact that Corel and Red Hat or any other distro of Linux are ALL THE SAME ANYWAY! It is free open source, they just slap their logo on it!
I don't want to be modded as Flamebait, but I have a real example of how microsoft is not that bad, and I hope this can spark an intelligent discussion about my valid points (valid b/c they are based on expierence).
It does not make sense to me why linux receives all of the die-hard praise that it does. I was willing to go on the linix bandwagon i excitedly bought Corel Linux Delux with Wordperfect for 79.99 at CompUSA, and I was ready to join the open source revoultion, this is where my problems began.
The installation was brutal, it took me 3-6 hours to get LILO to work, and even then it did not auto-detect any of my hardware. I was forced to look at 640X480 resoultion on my $199.99 Voodoo3 while in Win98 I was using 1024X68. My problems were further compounded by the fact that my modem was not detected. Someone told me that winmodems do not work, so I spent 129.99 on a US Robitics 56K and realized that the AOL's cd does not work with Linux. I called AOL to have them send me a Linux version and after dealing with their computer illeterate reps they told me a Linux version was not available (they did not even know what linux was!!!). My friend helped me out and let me get access to his dialup account from a local provider, I managed to get connected. Corel does not bundle Internet Explorer with Linux so I had to resort to an OOLLLDD version of netscape. I never realized how much I appreciated true type Microsoft fonts until looking at this thing, it was unreadable! I was willing to bear with this, but then the lame copy of Word Perfect that comes with it did not read any of my important documents, everything looked all messed up. Also, I could not print. When I tried to add a printer to Linux there was maybe 5 choices, I tried them all, but I got nothing by garbage to print out (smiley faces, harts, and other messed up characters) $300.00 laser printer down the drain.
With microsoft I have none of these problems happen. The hardware is transparent to me . . . I was out this $$
Linux 79.99 Printer 300.00 Modem 129.99 Voodoo3 199.99 potentail new dial up (replace AOL): approx 19.95 a month

My other gripe with this was that I had to actually "buy" a copy of this software. Doesn't open source mean "free to all"? I realize that the point of OSDN is to get the software out to people for free, but how are we supposed to get it without "paying" some company like Corel . . . if I have to pay Corel, to use their OS, than how different are they from microsoft, how can Corel honestly sell something to me that was developed Open Source, they did not code Linux, that is like me downloading copies of it, burning it on a CD and selling it for 79.99? Yeah, people have said that it is free because yiou can download it from their web site, but how am I going to do that without an OS to begin with? It is kind of the chicken or the egg problem all over again, what am I going to download it with . . . ossmosis? So in some sense, I just don't see the difference between Microsoft and Red Hat and Corel, they both need me to pay them for their software, making the concept of information being free to all a farce.
Microsoft made a standard, and it prevented me from the hassles of Linux and hardware, maybe the OSDN should work on Plug and Play in the OS, then it would be more accessable to the average user, I consider my self pretty savvy as far as computer users go, so if I can;t get it working how is the average joe?
getting a good signal is like pulling teeth, if the moon, sun, trees, and mars are not aligned correctly, you lose signal strength. I always seem to be operating at 50% of what they say I should be. Pure crap!
It amazes me that so many allegedly "educated" people have fallen so quickly and so hard for a fraudulent fabrication of such laughable proportions. The very idea that a gigantic ball of rock happens to orbit our planet, showing itself in neat, four-week cycles -- with the same side facing us all the time -- is ludicrous. Furthermore, it is an insult to common sense and a damnable affront to intellectual honesty and integrity. That people actually believe it is evidence that the liberals have wrested the last vestiges of control of our public school system from decent, God-fearing Americans (as if any further evidence was needed! Daddy's Roommate? God Almighty!)
Documentaries such as Enemy of the State have accurately portrayed the elaborate, byzantine network of surveillance satellites that the liberals have sent into space to spy on law-abiding Americans. Equipped with technology developed by Handgun Control, Inc., these satellites have the ability to detect firearms from hundreds of kilometers up. That's right, neighbors.. the next time you're out in the backyard exercising your Second Amendment rights, the liberals will see it! These satellites are sensitive enough to tell the difference between a Colt.45 and a.38 Special! And when they detect you with a firearm, their computers cross-reference the address to figure out your name, and then an enormous database housed at Berkeley is updated with information about you.
Of course, this all works fine during the day, but what about at night? Even the liberals can't control the rotation of the Earth to prevent nightfall from setting in (only Joshua was able to ask for that particular favor!) That's where the "mars" comes in. Powered by nuclear reactors, the "mars" is nothing more than an enormous balloon, emitting trillions of candlepower of gun-revealing light. Piloted by key members of the liberal community, the "mars" is strategically moved across the country, pointing out those who dare to make use of their God-given rights at night!
Yes, I know this probably sounds paranoid and preposterous, but consider this. Despite what the revisionist historians tell you, there is no mention of the "mars" anywhere in literature or historical documents -- anywhere -- before 1950. That is when it was initially launched. When President Josef Kennedy, at the State of the Union address, proclaimed "We choose to go to the mars", he may as well have said "We choose to go to the weather balloon." The subsequent faking of a "mars" landing on national TV was the first step in a long history of the erosion of our constitutional rights by leftists in this country. No longer can we hide from our government when the sun goes down.
I would have to say go with the big name guys. Dell's prices are insane. I cannot build a better system (we are talking quality parts here) for the money than they can. Also , you don't have to worry about moving OSes around . . everything is already done for you. Also to get a decent business system from Dell will cost you way less than $1000 (especially if you use your old monitors), plus most of the time you can get the latest copies of MS office for no charge.
Also I know the name may be tainted, but I cannot stress the quality of E-Machines. If your tech staff knows a bit about hardware, their horrible tech support is not an issue. We have about 50-60 E-Machines here, and only 2 or 3 have ever gave us a problem. These PC's are insanley priced and the components are name brand. You can a 1Ghz+ machine for under $800 with a monitor if you look around.
Remember these big guys buy in bulk that is why they offer good prices. Plus most of the time the PC is ready to go (as long as it comes with the OS you want which you can customize with Dell.)
How does digital projection work? Nothing in the article mentions it. Is it a big task for the theaters to upgrade to it? I am curious as to what equipment plays the stuff, what it is stored on, and do they use the same screen as for other movies. I guess this stuff has to be super expensive or else everybody else would have it for AoC.
I think the stealing aspect refers to the potential sale of the software. Perhaps without any way to get it for free people would have no other choice but to buy it. That is not to say that all of the 34% of stolen copies they referred to would have been purchased, but I am sure that some of them would have resorted to it.
You also have to realize the pirated copies that are then sold on a street corner for 75% lower than retail value.
The point is the potentail sales went over to people getting free copies or pirated copies at a high discount and in each case the developer of the software gets nothing.
Why is apple *again* shutting themselves out of a potentially lucrative market? The eMac looks like everything that the new iLamp should have been. The design incorporates a 17 inch CRT (something that the iMac was begging for). I realize that Jobs thinks he knows what consumers want, but at least give us a choice.
If I could get this for the home, I would get one right now, personally the G4 tower is too expensive, and I am not too fond of the new iMac design. The eMac looks amazing, too bad it is for the very small education market!
I think companies (the one I work for included) spend more time & money trying to weed out certain computer abuses by purchasing hardware and software to "police" employees than it would be to just fire them. No matter what sites and protocols we try to block to save our bandwidth the lowlifes will always find something new to avoid doing their job. Policing employees has become a full time job. The worst offenders are the tools like AIM and Real Player, that crap can bring the network to its knees.
I think it was posted because there is potential for an interesting discussion to take place from/. readers.

It is only a matter of time before Educator Tycoon hits the shelves to deliver this groundbreaking product to the public? Haven't programs (i.e. games) like this been available to gamers for years?
What makes this stuff any more realistic or ground-breaking than the latest buzz phrases on the back of Mall Tycoon, I am definately not gonna take their word for it.
"If only they'd had an open beta program" Then instead of technical difficulties, the thing wouldn't work at all!
Typical Unix response. When said point cannot be proven wrong . . attack the grammer and spelling.
Unix & Linux's strengths are propaganda.
Unix & Linux Zealots use it because they like feeling superior to others. The exert their superiority by the desire to know something that others do not when it has no pratical use.
