  1. Re:This is not surprising on Is Microsoft Paying To Influence UN Standards? · · Score: 1

The UN makes lots of "laws". Every member of the UN agrees to be bound by the terms and conditions of being a member nation. When you violate UN laws such as the Declaration of Human Rights, it allows other countries to ask for sanctions against those nations. When member nations agree to implement the sanctions you have enforcement.

Thus, the UN has an executive (Kofi Anan), legislative assembly (general council), judiciary (Security Council), and enforcement arms (Security Council and general council).

If that isn't government I don't know what is. Yes, some countries break the laws and get away with it but that is no different from any other government.

Let me put it this way, if the UN has no power why after the WTO ruled against the US did the US suspend their steel tarrifs instead of facing billions of dollars in orange tarrifs?

The problem is these IDs are based on a non-biometric data source. (ie. birth certificate). As long as the root of the document chain is comprimisable the whole system is. If I am the same age and gender as another person they can become me if I can get their birth certificate.

I just spit up my drink. The worst part is I'm applying to get a German passport. My father passed away recently, and considering the data that was in his birth certificate (family history for 300 years). I would say that things have been known to go wrong with collecting this much information. Especially considering what my birth certificates from that era were used for.

But I'd have to say that Germans would probably be the last people to abuse that data considering that a vast number of them know the consequences. I'd be far more worried about Ashcroft with that data than Schroder.

Anyways, this iris scanner thing is only good for as long as iris scanners are rare. Just like you can fake a photo on a passport so could you fake an iris scan.

Umm... there are only so many ways to encrypt / decrypt. The code for encryption / decryption cannot be encrypted. So, since no other executables have the need for encrypting / decrypting the executable itself any program employing this engine can safely be marked as a virus and removed. Secondly, both Linux and OpenBSD now support W^X memory meaning this kind of situation can be avoided because there would be no way to change the executable once loaded. Not opening email as root goes a long way to preventing viruses.

Hence, the law is redundant because making up info for the purpose of fraud is already illegal, and creating legal aliases it perfectly legal and supported in case law. Also, No Fixed Address is a perfectly valid legal address. Try writing the law in a way that doesn't require everyone to disclose their primary telephone number and prevents the registration of the 7 digit telephone number for 411. You've always been able to do this in Windows, if you change the extension of the file it changes how windows treats it.

Since windows doesnt change the extension from what it thinks it is the problem is moot. Ie. if I convince windows that an executable is an HTML document and it saves it as an HTML document and subsequently opens it with an HTML viewer then there is no problem. If it saves it with .exe and then executes it later there could be a problem.

Windows doesn't use magic bytes to choose file type it uses file extension. Thus as long as Windows saves the file with the extension it thinks it is and continues to operate in such a fashion everything is fine. All that happens is when you double click the executable it opens it with a PDF viewer. BIG DEAL.
