The actual production costs may go down, but they are probably way less than 50% of total costs.
There is the infrastucture costs, salaries, maintenance, delivery systems (poles, wire, labor), and whatever else goes into producing the fusion reaction.
To help, we have assembled a massive and still growing database of spam, collected from volunteers among our millions of MSN and Hotmail subscribers. This database will prove invaluable later this year when we release Outlook 2003, which will include a new, smart filter that will access the database to recognize and block spam more effectively. The filter in Outlook 2003 also will be updated frequently and easily, as with Windows Update today.

To help MS make more money, we have collected the email of millions of idiots who haven't read their EULAs. This database will prove invaluable later when we mine it for whatever data we want. With the release of Outlook2003, we will have new, smarter ways of adding your email to our database to recognize and block your own unwanted email more effectively, while allowing all virii through. The shear number of patches for Outlook2003 has forced us to adopt a Windows update structure that automatically runs daily, or more often if we let people announce all of our new security enhanced security holes.

It just annoys me to no end to hear a family member say "he's into computers", this is such a generic term.
What if you make 80mm fan's for a living? Does this quality a family member to install a new OS? I know damn fine PHP programmers who couldn't close all their windows before shutting down if their live's depended on it (and their work usually does) Network engineers don't know how to install servers, and just because you play games 23/6 does not qualify one to fix them either. Most people can figure this out.
But when a family member refers to you, chances are you are just "into computers" and should be able to "just fix it'
I once was tested by Radio Shack and Ace Hardware while in high school, figured the test out, and had excellent marks.
I lied.
According to their results, I had never drank, partied, and had no friends that partied. loved my mother, never stole anything from anybody, not even a paperclip from work.
What are they going to do at the end of the test.... call you a liar? They don't know you from a hole in the wall.
Now the question is... did you want to work there after this utter stupidity. Imagine the people who tell the truth... This is the world of business, only about 20% of what goes on is the truth. I was at least 80% truthful on the test, so I guess I'm pretty ethical in the world of business.
Looking at the amount of movie clips and entire flicks posted to the '*.erotica.*' newsgroups on a daily basis, I have to believe that porn is a significant percentage of the traffic, but is it 10%, 20%, 50%? More?
Just take your daily download count and multiply it by 20.
My bad, yes there are many plans for replacing M$. That would be fine, I am just not familiar with larger government installs of Apple solutions. desktop replacement yes, but the many large databases would probably port and scale better on other systems.(read not just linux)
Hello,
I am a member of PLUG and have RSVP'd for the meeting and was going to post a request to the slashdot community for documentation on successful conversions from M$ to Linux, including articles or links to sites, so I can go armed with some facts on government conversions including military, local, state, federal, school systems (many of our school systems in AZ use the same rules for contractors as the county does), etc. For instance, about those schools in the northwest that converted their labs recently.
thanks, just reply to this thread and i will keep an eye out for it, or email me at the above address.
Sound like a whole lot of discussion and no action!
Here's my poor assed excuse for a letter to my County Councilmember (yes I do live in Maricopa County)
Councilman Fill in name here,
I am writing you in regards to the news that the Maricopa County Council is debating an Enterprise Agreement with Microsoft. However, I have read that according to Maricopa County Policies, Microsoft should be disqualified from any contractual business with the County. I would like to declare my support for Microsoft's disqualification.
According to MC1-902 DEBARMENT AND SUSPENSION OF CONTRACTORS, I read the following:
"B. The causes for Debarment or Suspension shall include, but are not
limited to, the following:
2. Conviction of any Person or any subsidiary or affiliate of any Person
under any statute of the Federal government, this State or its political
subdivision or any other State for:
k. Any other offense indicating a lack of business integrity or business
honesty which affects responsibility as a Contractor.
3. Conviction or civil judgment finding a violation by any Person or any
subsidiary or affiliate of any Person under State or Federal Antitrust
Statutes."
Microsoft, having been convicted of Federal Antitrust Statutes (penalties pending), clearly falls into the catagory described in part 3, and several court cases past and pending show a clear lack of integrity and business honesty as outlined in part 2. I cannot find that ANY government body would be willing to work with such contractors, let alone having rules against it and clearly ignoring those rules.
There are many alternatives to Microsofts products. Alternatives that have broken no laws, Federal or Local, are well supported and used by many large governments (Germany, Taiwan, et al). As a concerned voter in Chandler, I must point out that I cannot support criminal behavior and would hope that my County Council would see fit to do the same and ONLY consider alternatives as Microsoft is clearly unqualified to meet County requirements.
Thank You,

The big three apps are Outlook, IE, and Office. We have Evolution, Mozilla and ???? A contender for the missing piece of the desktop puzzle deserves a better review than this.
I'll take my ad enabled Opera as well. While I appreciate Mozilla and it's contributions, Opera 6.x.x is my browser of choice.

.... haven't of us gone to a local LUG (linux user group) meeting before? No?
If we can't stand to meet face to face, then linux adoption around the globe would be a complete waste of hope.

Oh, it did? Now what will the rest of the software industry do?

It's nice to have choices
