    An armed citizenry is of no consequence, because the weapons controlled by the police+military are so much more powerful. It's like bringing a knife to a gunfight, but up a notch.

    And the same demographic which owns guns to defend itself against the gummit is the same one supporting ever increasing funding for advanced weaponry for the gummit.

    I think you might be missing the point. He's saying that the new information/digital economy requires less people to run it and is therefore reducing the overall number of jobs.

    Kodak was a manufacturer. Instagram isn't.
    Canon, for instance, still employs a few people. The better story would be that Canon is now experimenting with robotic assembly of their cameras.

    Instead of specific books, I usually recommend to people looking for reading material that they read the entire output of certain authors: Orwell, Sinclair, van Tilburg Clark, Shute, Faulkner, Dos Passos, Francis, O'Hara, Doctorow, and some others.

    Oddly, some of my favorite single works come from writers whose other books which I either can't get past the first chapter or don't pick up because of the subject. For instance, Gravity's Rainbow is in my top five all time, but Pynchon's other books never engaged me. Stephenson's group about the Waterhouse/Shaftoe families is up there as well, but I vividly remembering picking up Anathem in a bookstore and leafing through it for a minute, then putting it down with no interest in it.

    Actually, if you were serious about acting against a particular target, then finding out the methods, timing, degree, and flexibility of their response is indeed important,

    And I would, just not by attacking it. I would have a fake accident or stage some kind of shooting nearby but not related to the target to test responses.

    The issue was trivial. They did not have capacity to handle the unexpected demand. Their capacity to handle a surge was not there. They did not have the proper surge capacity.

    I am not a logistics expert, but it seems to me that they did not actually have a proper surge capacity at all.

    Yes, this huge volume of traffic totally makes their overage charge of $1.99 per MEGABYTE if you go over your 2 GB monthly limit. Why do I fucking pay 15 dollars per gig for the first 2 and then 2 thousand dollars for the next one? Is it to lull me to sleep and then ram a huge charge up my ass? Because it feels like it.

    Did I mention fuck Verizon? I went into a store, but the guy said there were no more iPhone 4s available anywhere. I should get a 5 - all the 4s had been sent back to Apple. Went home, found a 4s on the Verizons website for 99 cents. Do the stores and the website belong to the same organization? Because it doesn't feel like it.

    The only bright spot about dealing with Verizon is the followup quality control call which lets you scream obscenities at the corporation for a few minutes.

    These guys have to keep a paranoid, choking control on the people. Oil-filthy-rich nations in the region have to be praying that no organization whose initials are AQ would have the brilliant idea to take them over instead of wasting their time bombing malls and the streets outside embassies. I mean, how much effort would it take to overthrow Dubai? About as much as it would take to assume control of the Cleveland Rotary Club, maybe?
