Come on x86ers, save up for a Mac (even a used one) and get more stuff done more enjoyably. If you're going to spend $ on new hardware (which Longhorn will surely require for 95% of the pop.), don't run the risk of it not working with your setup.. and you can still run *nix or a BSD.

except for the fact that a mac costs about 4 times as much as an equally fast x86. not even talking about most games which dont work on macs

so atleast ill stay on my x86 dual booting linux and windows and keeping my costs down, although i do admit that i really would like to try that osx once.

you are not fixed to xandros, i use debian and can (and atleast did) boot 2.2 2.4 2.5 and 2.6 series kernels, so just switch your distro to one that fits your needs better.

also check when the last security stuff for the windows 95 generation (95,98,me) and older nt's (4 and downwards) was released. on the other hand even the 2.0 kernel is still maintained and updated.

im not an expert here, just done a (tiny) bit of java programming but how would that be different from the current situation?

everyone can write new classes and include them with whatever they want, even microsoft. afaik the java classes are actually available as source so this is actually a non-issue.

iirc you can currently also write modules in c for java to use platform specific stuff (like the opengl stuff for java) so as above there is nothing that would change.

ms cant use the code now, cos they aint got it, and wont be able to use it if its gpl, cos they cant use it without publishing the changes.

sorry to disagree with you but usb pnp support is definately NOT fine! I know of at least 3 cases where installing a scanner is a major problem on win2k (not xp, wont touch that ;) ), if you do anything thats not described in the manual in the exact order (install software, plug in).

once you plug in the scanner BEFORE you installed the software (what you usually do with usb devices) you have a hard time removing any trace oft the scanner before its even possible to install the software correctly, which includes tampering with the registry (nothing a standard user should do).
