    awful article... things that "journalist" forgot to mention are important: replaytv allows you to send file to other users 15 times and users who received the file can not send it again to anyone.

    That makes all the difference in upcoming lawsuit. I find it hard to believe Sonicblue people didnt stress that out to him.

    at the same time, it is extremly easy to copy someone else's work than invent it yourself... so there were no real protections for software companies out there in europe before.. there is no reason that you should be able to patent hardware but not software, EU laws have not been up to the date with computer industry.

    Of course, that doesnt mean that ridicilous patents should be awarded but there has to be protection or else why invent?!

    it is well know game companies make money off games not hardware, of course they will protect their rights

    what did he think, they will let him make money off his back? if he provided some free service or information, i would understand his plea, but they guy did it for $$$, so he got what he wanted now

    because it is much more convinient to useit from your sofa than sitting in front of your computer... its like comparing watching DVD's on your computer with watching it on your entertainment system... big diff.

    PVR's are awesome, every single person who ever tried them loved them to the death... But you need to try it in order to understand it

    right...unless they hire around 500 programmers and spend 3-4 years going through code, I doubt anything will come out of it... of course, I doubt you will accept that kind of argument, based on your comment, govt should be able to regulate as long as you agree with it... sadly govt does not work that way, so your notion of them forcing to sell stripped down Windows is quite interesting if not laughable...

    There is no way judge should be able to order MS to give their source code to the "states". What would they do with it anyway?

    It is not like anyone would be able to understand it anyway, unless MS has to also send instructions and visual guides... which would be pretty funny actually, but in any case, to be fair, there is no reason for any judge to order something like this for any company... why? this is not copyright/patent violation case

    This probably shows how out of touch prosecution and judge are... there are so many things that can be done to MS, and making them give their source is probably the stupidest idea I ever heard of.

    It "might" be competitor to ReplayTV but it certainly isnt competitor to Moxi.. they dont have a market yet, and even when they do, they only support digital channels... so no nbc, abc, fox, ups, wb or cbs ;-)

    Besides, snapstream is nothing revolutionary... just goes one step futher than video capture cards... hardly an TiVO or replay TV competitor... thats like saying that dvd-roms in computers are competitors to standalone dvd players... right :P

    ok, so argument is that there are freeware alternatives? THEN USE THEM! Dont use cracked version of shareware program... how can you justify using cracked version due to the fact that there is alternative?!

    It has nothing to do with being noble and it has everything to do with doing what they love to do as their means of survival.

    So you basically want T1 up/down for 45$ a month? wouldnt that be wondeful! While we are at it, what about those outrageous Porsche prices? They used to cost 6000$ and now they are 60,000$... damn it!

    Actually, I have to apologize for my price misunderstanding... I thought it will be 199$, however it seems as if it is going to sell for 299$ in USA.

    As to comment on pricing, sony purchases in huge quantities for their computers as it is... those prices are significantly lower than what we pay in retail... how else would xbox cost $300-$320 to produce? If 199$ (or 299$) is right for sony addon, then XBOX should cost 799$ by any means since it has much more hardware in it...
    (keep in mind that I dont own XBOX or plan to own one)

    I understand this is /., and that everything with the name linux in it is extremly usable and cool, but still.... its over priced, it doesnt work on TV's...it is unclear if it will work as upcoming Net & hardrive pack as well... too many unclears in order to call it a good value for 299 (or 199 for that matter).

    that would be cool (tivo) - however, how can tivo record while you are playing PS2? oops ;-)

    ... notice how I am reffering to retail prices... SONY purchases their hard drives in quantities of hundreds of thousands.. I am pretty sure they get some kind of discount ;-)

    true...true... case of the dell notebook looks and is crappy... however, I have inspirion 4000 and I never had many issues with it... I have draged it around everywhere, left it on 24/7... in 1.5 years, my hd broke & my battery died... they sent a tech out to replace it AFTER the warranty expired, without any fees (i had the cheapest 1 yr, mail in support)... thats prolly why I will by Dell again

    Is that hard drive going to be used only for linux? can we save games to it?

    While it sounds very cool, it is way too expensive - you can get 40 GB hard drive for 67$ in retail, NIC for 10$ in retail and all those other adapters and perhipals for 40$..in retail... so their hardware cost like 60$ max...

    But, I guess they do have to pay for development costs (???) and make some money on small amount of users... another major drawback is that you have to use it on your computer screen... now, do you really want to drag your playstation to your computer all the time? whats the point?

    However, cool thing would be if we get some hacks and mods that let us use wireless nics and bigger hd's and normal tv's.... take that webtv!

    oh jesus... they dont have to offer "Aibo" clone with exact version of their software, what are you talking about?

    Corporate espionage is alive and well, but that doesnt mean they are stupid. They can use whatever info they can obtain from aibo's to enhance their own product... it doesnt mean they will copy the code.... and currently Aibo is the best robot of its kind on the market... I am pretty sure company that I work for would love to get their hands on source of competing product, but that again doesnt make it right ;-)

    Apple doesnt have recordning company, does it?
    As to everything else, they threatened to sue that site who posted info on how to install full Mac OS X, using upgrade CD's...
    Apple will sue you anytime they think you violated their copyrights, sale or no sale and they have proven that gazillion times.

    Now, what you are talking about is mp3 and RIAA, and sony being an ass there... which is true, but this article was about something else, where sony was probably right, at least at their corrected stand.

    1. apple has been the most vigilant prosecutor of anything that violates their copyrights yet they seem doing better and better 2.SONY did not like people decrypting their software and puting it up for downloads. Anyone, including competing companies could download it and use it to their liking. Now I dont really see anything wrong with that... End of Sony really seems a little bit premature ;-)

    lol... so I shold put a javascript on my page that crashes mozilla back to the stone age but works fine with IE? ooops... If some1 did that, I am sure that we could would see mob of angry /.'s posting away... lol... you can always manipulate the truth in your own mind, but the fact is that his actions are his own choice... I doubt many people care really even though I know of quite few extremly competent ppl who use outlook just because it can sync with their pda's and cell phones... oops...

    HTML Help Workshop from MS can perfectly extract all of the files in .chm, in their original state. Open it up, click on decompile and voila... I dont see how you managed to run into problems, i have done so with hundreds of chm files...sure, it doesnt always save all chm related data however files are always preserved in their original state

    everyone seems to fail to see the difference between persistant state online games and multiplayer games... there is a huge difference between them. Online games (EQ, UO, Sgalaxy, etc) develop your character, basically it is another world you play in and people find this extremly interesting while in multiplayer games you play single battles/games and when you turn it off, everything fades away.

    There is a huge difference there in level of complexity between servers for multiplayer games and real online games. It actually costs developers to keep all of it up... imagine if all Quake servers were owned and operated by iD software... you think it would be free if they had to pay for bandwith and space for 2000 servers? ;-)

    Is 10$ per month too much? not really... you cant really play more than one or two persistant state online games at the same time... even that will take up 4-5 hours of each day or whatever free time you have

    its more of an generator than your standard apc that can deliver 35 seconds of power ;-)...
    technology itself might be interesting in server farm enviroments, where price doesnt matter that much (when it comes to computer usage)... however, with 10 hr charge with a price of 100$, gas fuel power generators are much more economical for personal use...

    you gotta start somewhere though
