"Some critics also worry that law enforcement authorities will be tempted to use it for broader aims, such as snaring deadbeat parents or profiling for drug couriers."
AND?!?! Why make this sound like a bad thing? Maybe if people knew they were being watched they would a) take responsibility for their actions b) obey the law c) cough up for their kids if they couldn't be bothered to use a contraceptive.
Personally, I'd like to make every single person submit fingerprints, hand print, iris scan, DNA, tongue print, voice sample, handwriting sample and have you tagged with a chip a la demolition man. If I know where you are and what you're up to, you'll think twice before thieving, raping or killing.
"Do you have some illusion that nbody can snoop on what you are doing when you surf slashdot normally from home?"
I don't think I suggested anything like that!! My point was excatly the opposite, THERE IS NO SECURITY!!!
"SEcurity must be in the hands of the end stations, not the carriers."
Yeah, I said that too. If the server is IPSec enabled and you are using an IPSec client, then fine.
Regardless of the medium you use to communicate, there is no guaranteed security!
Slashdot. A Review.
Strange really. Slashdot has become a bastion of "free speech" and anti-government sentiment. Constant rants about invasion of privacy, Echelon and the FBI's Magic Lantern. Microsoft is evil. Linux is great. Students, University Life and more fucking student stuff. How to waste money on useless gadgets. Fuckwitted "Ask Slashdot" questions that could be answered in about 10 seconds by using a search engine. More fucking Linux advocacy. Anime (especially the non-dubbed or subbed varieties that only Japanese speakers could ever fully appreciate). Another fucking kernel release. Pointless "science" features which would be better relayed by Elijah Wood on crack. Arguments over different software licenses that slide into meaningless handbag fights with excuses more queer than Julian Clary. A bit more pro-Linux crap from some "We've just graduated" hooray-Henrys. A "discussion" of wireless technology that deteriorates into Microsoft bashing for no reason whatsoever.
And then....
THIS.
A wonderful little story posted by CmdrTaco. Yes, let's all run a keylogger on our systems to count how many keys we have pressed. Yes, that's right. Slashdot has only recently run this article. Hey, that was almost as good as the article on the hoax XBox Emulator where readers were being asked to download and try the emulator binaries with no regard for trojan/virus possibilities - Could the editors not be bothered to check it themselves? (And the ironic part is, not only did the package not come with source code or fall under the GPL, but it was for an M$ (tee hee!) operating system). Truly outstanding journalistic integrity.
Then there's freedom of speech. The bread and butter of Slashdot. The "Papal Beacon" to call to arms all the brothers and sisters of slashdot with one ring to bind them all. A bit of flag waving, hands on hearts and everybody recite the amendments. Yes. DMCA... disclosure of security bugs in kernel... Government censorship... And then THIS. Talk about pot calling kettle. What fucking hypocrites. That particular post was spot on yet it was moderated to oblivion by what could have only been the editors. Yeah, freedom of speech indeed. Well done chaps.
Yeah, I don't have to come here, nor do I have to read the posts. I don't have to get involved in moderation arguments or anything else like that. Oh, and please, somebody reply with that classic piece of shit Benjamin Franklin quote. I fucking love that one. Especially after someone posts a comment about how fucking paranoid you all are about CCTV and Echelon.
To save you all the effort of typing flames, please find them here in an easy to copy n' paste list:
"You suck! Slashdot is the best thing on earth!"
"If you don't like it, don't come here!"
"Fuck you!"
"Urgh, this is so a troll!"
"I am a student and I use Linux. I was offended by this."
"Go back to the UK you poncy Brit!"
Oh, and don't forget to moderate me down!! Go on! You know you want to!
Oi!!!! Moderators!!!! Yeah, I'm talking to you!!!
What the fuck? Redundant? Show me a post talking about market viability prior to mine. And while you're at it, mod THIS as redundant.
"Mac OS X has the potential to be a superb launching pad for doing game development".
It may have the potential, but is there the market? The volume of Mac games has always traditionally been of the low side, not because of the limitations of the technology, but the number of consumers to make games software profitable.
Absolutely. In fact, doing just that was one of the key questions in the MCSE. I got the rest of the points by entering my candidate number correctly and hitting enter. But hey, I'm not complaining.
Hear hear. Just because a bunch of people played with PDPs and they decorate their dome with some ornament every year does not make it news for nerds every time someone takes a dump at MIT.
Just goes to prove that Slashdot is, and always will be, a student "feel good" notice board, even if they are cutting salaries.
Ah HAHAHAHAH!!! HAHAHAH!!! I didn't go to uni, and I'm on £68,000 per year + bonus at 22 because I know Exchange 2000 inside out!!!!! AHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
HEY KIDS!!
Avoid wasting time typing out "Ask Slashdot" questions. Select one of the framework questions from below and modify as necessary! Sweet!
I'm researching a paper on fluid dynamics. I haven't done any work all semester as I have been playing Quake on my Windows ME machine and watching Cowboy Bebop on Cartoon Network. My paper is due in tomorrow. Could any Slashdot readers shed some light onto a topic which I clearly know nothing about.
I have just installed Linux in my company. It took months of pestering and annoying senior managers for them to let me do it. Seeing as I've only ever installed Red Hat from a bootable CD and X won't start, I feel that this is the right solution for my company as they are using evil MS products now. Could anybody please come over and help me install this because now I'm in a really embarassing situation. Thank you.
Hi! I've recently been using Linux. I've used Red Hat and Debian. Which distribution is better? In fact, I've even been considering which O/S is better out of Linux and FreeBSD. Could anybody out there in slashdot land offer some advice? Your thoughts on emacs and vi are also appreciated.
Greetings fellow slashdotters. I'v recently just graduated from university. I reckon I know everything about computers and unix and micro$oft (tee hee funny dollar symbol!), and now I'm going to ask you a question. Not because I really want help or advice, but because I want to show off. Me and a buddy just got huge paying jobs with some pissy little startup that'll be bust in a year, and now we're in over our heads 'cos we told them we could do programming in C.
I'm really interested in kernel hacking. I'm not going to tell you which kernel, because you will all assume I mean Linux. I've never done any programming, I'm not quite sure what a CPU is and I don't know if I'm going to have time as it's my 13th birthday next week. Can any slashdot readers advise me of the way to go?
I've just been assigned a task to secure all communications between our fleet of oil tankers. I'm going to use Linux but I'm not sure how. Can anyone offer some thoughts or experiences of computers, RF, cryptography or being on a boat. God only knows how I got this job.
And there you have it! Please post suggestions or requests below, and moderate me down for wasting your time. Thank you.

Aaaas abaaht it then darlin'? Ahve been a cabbie fer firty yeeers nah...
Seriously. Am I the only person here that thinks that material like this is unsuitable? Slashdot has now sunk to an all time low by displaying that on its site, let alone on the front page. Forget spelling, moderation or any other complaints that people have about this site - what about the under-18's or non-US citizens who may have just violated their country's laws by clicking that link? Not everybody's grasp of English is extensive enough to understand what pr0n or "not for young eyes" might mean.
Yes, this article may have something to do with Star Wars and IP, but is something like this really news for nerds? Not all of us are obsessed with pornography and get our kicks out of cartoon characters of princess leia getting jiggy with mister biggy.

"Windows 2000 service pack 2... took a lot longer than 10 seconds to download"
You don't *have* to download SP2 to get 128-bit crypto on Win2k. In fact you can get the Windows 2000 High Encryption Pack and install it on vanilla systems too. 192k standard, 320k redist. Ten seconds is possible!!

"Is any one particular company more patch-happy than others?"
In my professional experience, I have found that two names stand out as the "patch kings".
Not to Microsoft-bash, but there is a good deal of patches released for nearly all of their software and components. You may want to try looking at recent patch histories at Microsoft for IIS, and critical updates for Windows 98 and Internet Explorer. I spend maybe 2 days a month doing a full probe and catalog of the knowledge bases and product areas looking for updates, especially for Outlook.
My other favourite is HP. Out OfficeJet T45 needs new driver pack downloads with every release of Service Packs for Windows 2000. The original Win2k T45 drivers worked OK on Vanilla and SP1 systems, but when you upgrade to SP2 - BANG! 100% CPU usage. This is just one example of many. Their VL400 series and Brios have had many, many revisions and updates. One of the really annoying things with HP Brios is the vast difference in the product model numbers and video/chipset drivers. Most irritating, especially when I want to do a GHOST rollout. Yes, this is hardware, but DAMN - it's annoying.
No doubt here come the "Then why are you using MS?" and "why not standardise your user desktops for GHOST rollout" replies. Fact is, in the real world of support, it isn't always that simple. I am trying to get everybody on the same VL400 workstation, but you gotta justfy the cost savings against IT support time!

There is only one problem with FreeBSD... It's not OpenBSD!!! Is Dave here?
No.
Dave?
There's no-one called Dave here!

Yeah fine if your employer's servers are configured this way, but not for normal surfing!!

Ha ha ha. You used "M$" in a topic completely unrelated with anything to do with Microsoft. You are so funny.
Mod parent to "+5, Slashdot Groupthink" or "-1, Pathetic Asshole"
+5, Funny.
Truly an inspirational comment and one which made me laugh.

In the UK we have the Interception of Communications Act 1985 States quite clearly that a warrant is needed.
