  1. Re:What about older devices? on AT&T To Unlock Out-of-Contract iPhones · · Score: 3, Informative

Except that you can't use a pre-4S AT&T iPhone on Verizon, because Verizon's network is CDMA and all iPhones before the 4S (besides the Verizon 4) were GSM-only. And Verizon won't activate a phone that they didn't sell. The only option for an unlocked GSM iPhone in the US is T-Mobile, and even then you're limited to EDGE speeds because of their weird-ass frequencies.

The really disappointing thing is that it sold GREAT when the app was new, but while the dev continued updating the iOS app with all kinds of new levels and features, he chose to abandon the Android app and bitch and moan about the ecosystem rather than keeping the Android version on par with its iOS cousin.

Then he has the balls to wonder aloud why sales have dropped after that initial burst? Maybe if he'd updated the goddamn app anytime in the past eight months, it would have done a little better.

  9. Re:The article writer is a deaf idiot on Why Distributing Music As 24-bit/192kHz Downloads Is Pointless · · Score: 1

You make one good point: the proliferation of poorly mastered and encoded recordings has probably distorted the average person's perception of what sounds good.

Unfortunately everything else you say is pure bullshit. The author of the article got it right: there are advantages to high bitrates for recording and editing purposes, but for playback, anything higher than 48/16 is a waste. I don't care if you think your magical ears can detect that 192/24 is "sharper" or has a better "brassy rattle" or shoots literal rainbows out of the speakers. The science (both theoretical and experimental) simply doesn't support what you're saying, no matter how many insults and shiny adjectives you throw in.

Oh, and I'm a classically-trained clarinetist (in the last semester of my doctorate in performance) and a recording engineer. Literally 100% of the work I do is with live instruments. I think it's fair to say that I do "know the joy of hearing real music", don't you? I know you played in your middle school band or something, but maybe you could calm down and listen to the knowledge of people with advanced experience in the relevant fields.

I don't recall off the top of my head how things have changed since the unibody models have been released, but if this guy has a Pro that's more than about a year old, he's got correct information.

Your idea of Obama taking his name off the ballot is an interesting one, and it could certainly have some fascinating implications for the race in the fall. One major reason that Japanese companies aren't crippled by health care costs, of course, is that their country has a public healthcare system. 25. Technical skills... on F(OS)S for Learning a Musical Instrument ? · · Score: 4, Informative

There have been some decent suggestions for metronome and tuning programs, but really, nothing can beat just dropping $30 or so on a combination tuner/metronome. Most have plugs for earpieces, so you can easily overcome the "drowning it out" problem, and should be available at your local music store.

Also, as a clarinetist, I can tell you that it's easy to develop bad habits early on, which will be difficult to overcome later. With any musical instrument, bad habits can lead from poor technique at best to debilitating injury, but violin (and viola) are particularly prone to this. While I've never played a string instrument for any length of time, many of my friends who are string players have told me that the first two or three lessons for beginners can be devoted to just _learning to hold the instrument_. Sometimes, the bow doesn't even come into play for weeks after that.

For this reason, I would say that the most important thing you can do as a beginning violinist is to find yourself a teacher who can show you the basic technical aspects of playing. Even if money is tight, it's worth taking just a few lessons to save yourself a lot of mental (and likely physical) anguish down the road. And of course, if money isn't really an issue, then you'll benefit from continuing lessons. There's no substitute for having a master standing over you and helping with individual issues. Many teachers love to take on adult students, so it shouldn't be hard to find someone in your area willing to teach you.

That all being said, welcome to the music world! The violin is one of the most challenging instruments to learn, but it's also one of the most versatile and widely used throughout the world. The rewards you'll reap from the experience will be well worth the investment of time and energy.
