I'd rather have nice open-sourced programs than a major vendor selling a PC with a RedHat Tax or whichever. If you like having linux pre-installed, go buy from a linux vendor. Personally, I wouldnt use any of the distros that would come pre-installed so it is useless to me; and I refuse to give charity to a company attempting to make $ off of linux just because of the fact that linux is involved. If they have a good idea they woudnt need my handouts. Normally I dont pay for any software, no matter what the hell the license is; But since Loki was porting games to linux I went out and spent the money at a computer store to buy their games, which supports them, (and shows CompUSA or where ever I bought it that at least 1 person will buy linux stuff in their area) because you see, they made something I need.

Not a matter of being cheap, just a matter of markets & demand.

The interfaces for these newer desktop Linux distros, like Lycoris and Lindows, seem to me to be just as intuitive as the one Windows XP has. Obviously there are differences, but it seems to me that starting from a blank slate, a new user can learn Linux just as easily as they can learn Windows or Mac OS.
I actually conducted an 'experinemnt' on my girlfriend on this exact inea. I felt the same way as you, that someone who had not been 'broken' on Windows should have no problem using Linux, granted it was properly set up.

At the time, she had never really used a computer for any length of time. So I built her one with some spare parts laying around my room, and asked her if she'd like to try linux (read: "your using linux.") Set her up with Slackware, and Windowmaker, installed things like OpenOffice (at the time it was still StarOffice,) Mozilla with all the plugins, some of the KDE games, some cutesy dockapps (Rubber Duckies of a CPU mon, etc.) And set up some nice menus to get at all the junk.

She was up and running in no time, enjoys the relatively stable environment, and abhors going to work and using a Windows box. Of course my ultimate goal of turning her into a real geek failed: pretty much the only thing she knows about a CLI is 'startx'

And before the trolls come, note that the girlfriend is _not_ in quotations :)

    Cheers.

WRONG. You automatically have the right to use something I make? wtf country is this in?

Snipped from Learning the GNU development tools:
When you create a work, like a computer program, or a novel, and so on, you automatically have a set of legal rights called copyright. This means that you have the right to forbid others to use, modify and redistribute your work. By default no-one, except you the owner, is allowed to do any of these things. To relax these restrictions, you need to enter into an agreement with other people individually when they receive a copy from you. Such an agreement is called a License Agreement, which potentially entails rights and obligations to both you and them. It is very important that the License is written by a lawyer, and invoked from every file that is part of the work, in order for that file to fall under the terms the License. This can be done either by including the full text of the license or by including a legalese reference to the full text of the License. In the free software community, we standardize on using primarily the GNU General Public License, which we will discuss in the next section.

So long as providers use their senses, and charge those who use the large amounts of bandwith, most will stop using so much, thinking that it isn't wort the cost, and some will think it's worth it, and foot the bill.

Only problem is, most providers aren't sensible.
