Purple Noon is a very cool flick. It was re-released to the art-cinema circuit a few years ago, and we had the pleasure of seeing it. The only drawback I can think of was that all these French-speaking people had last names like Ripley and Greenleaf. =-)

"Manos Hands of Fate"! Now that's a great movie. No, wait, it's a terrible movie. I mean, it's a great, terrible movie.
Amen, brother.
I would love an MP3 of that
Someone actually made a Torgo module for the AfterDark screensaver, complete with music. Fscking hilarious.
You could probably extract the resources from said file (if it's still out there) and convert it with ease.
There are some things that are artfully bad, meaning that if most people tried to make something that bad, they wouldn't succeed.
As the Psychotronic Film Catalog says, "what kind of horror movie would a Texas fertilizer salesman make?" (Yes, you can order unedited versions of Manos from these guys, if $20 is burning a hole in your pocket. Can't say I was ever that tempted though..) -----
Roosevelt was one of the ugliest people imaginable... he was no better than stalin
Gimme a break! Mind you, the Japanese-American internment was bad (note that Canada also caved into this hysterical nonsense as well), but no American president ever caused atrocities like the gulag system to spring up. Some would say that FDR was the best president the USA had this century (I'd place Truman higher myself)...
As superpowers/empires go, the States historically have one of the best records for respecting human rights. Yes, we have some problems here, but comparing us to Stalin?? Jeezus, read a damn history book already..
Thanks, David, for choosing a man responsible for spreading america's own brand of imperialsm
Considering the other available alternatives after the war -- a Western Europe awash in poverty, starvation and anarchy seems the most likely -- I wouldn't be bitching. -----

The talk of a "profiling system" reminds me of an exploit by Timothy Leary (as told by Robert Anton Wilson).
As Leary was rotting in a holding cell (having been busted for pot possession) in California, the state decided to administer a personality test to see where he belonged within their penal system.
The idiots in the Corrections Department issued him a test that he himself constructed.
So, he filled out all the answers that would lead the Powers That Be to think he was docile, complacement, looking for leadership, a born follower, etc. etc.
Once he was placed in minimum security for awhile, he escaped and high-tailed it for Switzerland.
Surely M2K could be mistreated as such, no? =-) -----

..and that would be the need to patch the kernel source to enable MOL. Call me old-fashioned, but patching kernels to allow for one app to run is a tad loony.
But, the newest version fixes this problem, so perhaps it's time to look at MOL seriously again... hmm.. -----
I think we need to take this article with the same grain of salt as the MindCraft study for 2 reasons:
First, Gartner does have a huge M$ bias, like MindCraft's testing organization. And IS managers (nicespeak for "trained lobsters") listen to them. So we have to force Gartner to be accurate, much in the same may MindCraft came around.
Second, this is actually a Good Thing. Remember the end-result of the MindCraft shootout? Linux was shown to be deficient to NT in one key area: the threading (or lack of it) in Linux' IP stack. Hmm, what do you think will be a priority in the 2.4 kernel dev work?
IMHO, we should treat Gartner like MindCraft: force them to be accurate and precise in their statements, and then zero in on fixing those areas in which their complaints are valid.
I think the one point to bear in mind here is that Apple evangelists and Linux mavens are not necessarily diametrically opposed (and in fact have a common competitor on which to focus).
So.. now that Apple has demonstrated that they're open to the idea of open source (to some extent at least).. do you think we could.. um.. encourage them?

what if a 'nuclear strength' EMP were developed that could fry the electronics of an entire city, or state, or country?
Well, from what I recall when researching the subject back in the eighties as an undergrad, it wouldn't take much to paralyze the USA.
Essentially, if you really wanted to do it, one of the smaller H-bombs (there's an oxymoron!) detonated over Nebraska or Kansas would nail a large amount of electronic equipment in the Lower 48, including that within large population centers. It may not have to be too much larger than what was tested above ground in the South Pacific in the 50's.
Of course, the scientists who uttered these remarks were SWAGging, so take this with a metric ton of salt. Then again, the US does have "launch on warning" as its official policy, and EMP (among other things of course) is used as justification: use 'em or lose 'em. -----
From what I've heard of OSX Server, it simply rocks. Not only does it come with a port of Apache, but also with a graphical shell for Apache. AFAIK, nobody else has that. And in the days before Java, more than a few CS grad students looked at NextSTEP and said, "yes, brothers and sisters, this is why we fought the revolution". And oh yeah, I think gcc and its entourage are thrown in as well with OS X Server (not sure about that tho'.)
The new hardware combined with OS X Server would be nothing short of stunning.
One thing that &^%$ess me off, however, is that there's no X server for OS X Server! (Did you get that?) Not without 3rd-party add-ons at least. Granted, the graphical rendering technology on NextSTEP was Display PostScript (cool), and the "Quartz" subsystem of OS X Server is supposed to use PDF (very cool).
But.. what the #%$@ do I do with X-based source code? Hack it to use Quartz? (Yeah, right.) Or try porting XFree86 to Darwin? (Yeah, right.) Or has someone come up with a solution to this snafu of which I'm unaware? (Always possible..) -----

I assume that most/.'ers would vomit at this idea, & rightfully so. But the Libs have swallowed it whole, practically canonizing the schmuck.
It's kind of consistent with their way of thinking: stick to a few absolute principles (e.g. "people who make money in a free market are inherently good"), and extend them in a facile way to ridiculous conclusions, real world contradictions be damned.
On the other hand, if the Libertarians actually campaigned to remove this type of censorship (be it.net, TV, flicks, whatever), I'd throw a few votes their way. But the Teeming Millions(tm), who prefer to be led like cattle, won't be doing so, so what's the point.. -----

Guinness has a dead-on grasp of the situation. The original movie was the only one close to being watchable, and its dialogue was dubious at best. (Lucas lifted some of the plot from Kurosawa's "Hidden Fortress" anyway.)
