    I think we need new English words to represent these concepts more concisely: an adjective for "not authorized to speak publicly on the matter", and a verb for "confirmed under condition of anonymity".

    edit: I also pay a premium for housing (that I could use toward a car) so that it doesn't bother me. you could do the same (by selling the car and living somewhere where it's more convenient with bus/tram/subway/bike/boat/skates), but instead you choose to complain ... ugh.

    2. what country do you live in? I've lived in Frankfurt and Stockholm and the public transport is extremely useful and almost always on time.

    3. the EU is socialistic and if you don't like it, move to America where you don't have any social programs/systems ... that way you can drive everywhere you go ... even to the mailbox to receive your daily mail.

    I have a house with incredible interior design and sparsely filled with designer furniture. Does that make me gay ... I hope not? I hope not, maybe I should tell me wife. It just means that I have a distinct appreciation for something that you can't comprehend (it has a few pieces by Eames and Jacobson with a few LC2s and LC4s mixed in ... for those interested).

    How often do you re-watch / re-read anything?

    I guess I can understand the "I'm so smart" aspect of having bookshelves full of books in one's flat.

    I can understand having large collections of music as well ... especially when entertaining

    But I've never understood why people collect movies? What does that really say about someone? You can't really entertain with them in the background like one can with music. I mean they can't even be used as a reference resource like a book can. I usually just think of it as a huge waste of money or it's for people that just have to collect stuff.

    which I don't think one can do ... because it's either widespread or not ... can that person at least provide a percentage? I'm mean ... even if a few 1000 machines have problems it's still a negligible percentage. And, how would this value compare to the normal failure rate from other manufacturers? I don't know, and I can't really compare it, because this fantastic article doesn't provide any information for gauging what "very widespread" means. It's just another anti-Apple article.

    why do I even read /. anymore ... I must be addicted to the internet in an unhealthy manner :(

    Every European kitchen I've cooked in had a gram scale (they're less the 10€ for an inexpensive model and 30€ for a decent one.) I don't understand how I got by living in the US without one ... I'm never giving it up now. Especially with baking, it's really not optional.

    As a microbiologist, I haven't anyone reputable suggest that H1N1/09 was engineered. Sounds like tin-foil hat material to me. And I wouldn't trust an MD/DO to speculate about the evolutionary origin of a virus.

    I have been to NYC and lived in Boston ... and that's why I know this is NOT implementable. But, in all seriousness, outside of the Northeast Corridor, mass/public transit is extremely lacking (see DFW Metro region for example.) In addition, people over here just wouldn't put up with that level of intrusion (even after the Madrid bombings.)

    Thankfully the US doesn't have (m)any widely-used metro systems. How about implementing this on a bus as well ... lol Europe will never go for this, and this is another reason that I have no interest in returning to the states. ugh ... when will Americans actually actively protest against something.

    that's kinda slow to be considered 4G isn't it. Seems more like Turbo3G, but I digress.

    Seriously, the limit isn't the mobile devices - it's easy to build a $500 device with better b/w. It's much harder to upgrade tens of billions of dollars of infrastructure to support it. Especially when most* of the country has no data service whatsoever.

    I hope not. I'm an American citizen, did a PhD in the US, and moved to Sweden to work because I was tired of the whitehouse administration. I now run a research group in Germany, but I guess that's only because I am a spy ... according to the GP.

    this comment is idiotic. Running two groups (one in the West and one in China) is becoming commonplace. Although this seems to be happening mostly in Singapore (due to English), more than in Beijing or Shanghai.

    A logical response would be to take the information at face value, using that to investigate further, rather than to simply blow it off because you don't recognize the credentials of the parties involved in the research. If I were a biochemist that's what I would do. Unfortunately I'm just a coder, so I have to depend on others to examine this and determine its accuracy.

    You're not acutely aware of the signal-to-noise problem in the biological sciences.
