i am for anything that removes the public from dependence on fossil fuel, especially arab\middleeast fuel, i think out dependence on arab oil is why those arabs are so damn cocky they think they can get away with anything since we are dependant on their oil, well the USA & the west need to QUIT buying middleeast oil and let the arabs economy be humbled...
i do agree with the replys stating that unbreakable is impossible, building a Linux distro with security as the major factor is allways a good idea...
so i wont bash em for trying, (get it? bash# em lol)
i don't care how many people disagree with this but what needs to be done is all web browsers should be made to never access local harddrives, and file managers should never be able to access the internet, merging these features with either app only invites trouble...
i agree, i don't watch that much TV anyway, maybe some History channel, discovery channel, old movies on TCM & AMC, FOX news cause CNNsucks...
and i do it all from a old 90 dollar 19 inch RCA even in color...
not too many people listen to longwave between 10KHz & 500KHz, thats WAY down in the basement...
i have listened some down there on my R.L. Drake and longwire antenna all i could hear was navigation beacons slowly doing their CW (boring)...
but Linux is not any more difficult than Windoze, only different, once anyone becomes familier with Linux then it becomes just as easy, and with most modern Linux distros it is a no brainer to get installed & running, as a matter of fact i have Redhat7.3 and it installed faster & easyer than Windoze, it took 15 minutes to install from booting from the CDrom to the one reboot at the end of the install, and ALL my hardware was automatically configured via Redhat's Anaconda, and for any hardware changes that occur after the install there is Kudzu to pick that up and make it easy to configure...
i like seeing this happen anywhere, and i want to see this happen in schools in the USA too, i don't want our children to be ignorent Windoze point & click kind of people, i want our children to confidently install a OSS Linux and be capable or doing anything either from the commandline or with a GUI frontend...
the GUI is nice but it can not allways be depended on for everything, ever try to compile something big while a bloated Window manager is up & running (KDE)? try it from runlevel 3 it sure does a better job, quicker too...
i will be the first to bash *some distros if Linux,
i think both SuSE and Mandrake totally suck ass, and they are both bloated piece of crap that are not worth the click to download and not worth the CDroms that are distributed with...
as a matter of fact the ONLY two Linux distros that i would reccomend to ANYBODY would be Redhat-7.1 thru 7.3 and Slackware-8
is M$FT needs to de-integrate IE from Windoze, make it so IE can not be used as a file browser on your compooter, and a file manager (Windoze Explorer) that can not access the internet, that would resolve some vulnerabilitys, most people wont like the inconvience (so what it would be more secure)
an even better idea woulld be to get Windoze off of your harddrives and get Linux (any flavor)
cymraeg: your post is not flamebait, you make some good & valid points:)
i think that is what peeves most greedy corperations is that they cannot totally remove our free will, and turn us all in to drones to feed their greed...
DMCA &\or CBDTA get passed in to law, & compooters get castrated, then this compooter i am using right now will be my last compooter, i will go back to the mountians and live like the hillbilly i really am HEEHAW...
1. get a regular CD player like a Sony Walkman, or something similer (or better)...
2. line out or the headphone jack will work connected to line in on the computer...
3. use your favorite audio recording app to record on the fly as you listen...
sure it might lose just a teeny tiny tad bit of quality but if you are carefull and with some adjustment you can make mp3's this way and will hardly be able to hear the difference...
4. ban copy protected music media. untill the music industry respects people right to fair use...
not only is it the New York Times, i refuse it give out my personal info (fear of spam) i think the idea if filtering information is worse than putting up with typos and mis-spelled words & vulgarity (sometimes good for a laugh) sounds like what geek.com do to some of the more zelous linux people they will block from posting replys to their articles, but geek.com sure lets those Windoze lubbers post & rant all they want...
i want to hear both sides to any story and with NO filters, filters sould like gagging free speech to me...
leave the licences the way they are, or have no warenty at all, software will survive or die off depending on its merits, with all the BBS & and other comunucation between people the word on bad software will travel faster than good software...
P.S. don't read the mainstream AOLish web sites for reviews i bet those are rigged...
the way i feel about the choice between opensource (linux) & closed (M$FT) is i rather use OSS, because m$ft's OS & apps have plenty of bugs too & linux people know all OSs are gonna have some bugs to be worked out so why pay mickysoft high dollars for a OS with bugs when i can get linux with bugs free, and linux users don't have that pretence that Windoze zelots have about computer bugs.
personally if it was not for other friends & family that are mostly ignorent of linux & would probably crash it, so i keep Win9x on here to keep em out of my linux, atleast untill i can get them educated in it, allready have my niece dualbooting Redhat7.1 & Win8x too:) HappyTrails
slow??? it launches fast and loads web pages fast for me, how old is your computer??? if it is older than 2 years old maybe it is time you buy a new one with over a 1gig CPU & 256 megs RAM, people bitch about software and never consider the hardware it is installed on...
i am a retired truck driver that plays on computers for a hobby, and for communication with distant family members, i worked for a living, and never wore a tie & suit in my life, who cares about a typo or occasional missspelled word, this is a BBS and this whole string will be lost to the archives in a few hours anyway, not like i am writing a book to be published, ROFLMAO!!!
if i was a school adminstrator i would hire a couple of Linux Geeks and have them remove Windoze from EVERY computer in the schools and have them install Redhat7.1 or 7.2 or 7.3, then i would gather up all the Windoze CDroms and take a knife or similer sharp instrument and score the data side of these Windoze CDroms, then mail them back to Micky$oft and include a letter telling them where they can put their Software licences (where the sun don't shine)...
