How is EQ objectively defined and measured?
Usually in decibels and KiloHertz. Doh!
There are probably many types of intelligence that can't easily be measured, especially by something as narrow as an IQ test. A quick trawl around Google and I find at least eight...
* Linguistic intelligence ("word smart")
* Logical-mathematical intelligence ("number/reasoning smart")
* Spatial intelligence ("picture smart")
* Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence ("body smart")
* Musical intelligence ("music smart")
* Interpersonal intelligence ("people smart")
* Intrapersonal intelligence ("self smart")
* Naturalist intelligence ("nature smart")
Small flaw in your argument; if the power goes down, the radios will work again...;-)
Yes, they would! In areas often afected by disaster or poor infrastructure the houses keeping radio equipment would probably have standby generators. Failing that, there is plent of mobile ham radio equipment that runs off 12V batteries or in trucks and autos. CB radios also work in trucks and autos (and are less than 30MHz).
After my recent experiences of using a Mac I can see it is _usually_ easy to use. However the error messages when they appear are completely useless. Messages like "the disk can not be burned right now".
OK, why not?!! How do I fix it?!!
Not sure if that was an _exact_ example of what I remember seeing but you get the idea.
Easy to use until something goes slightly wrong. And it also still has (Apple) apps with greyed-out options with no clue given as to why they haved been greyed out.
Well if we are talking continuity, never mind his age, what about the tardis?!
Why change it from a neat, tidy room with a perspex water-purifier thing in the middle to a chaotic green mess all of a sudden? The new tardis design may have been a great idea in 1963 but it's just bang-allan to change it now! (IMHO)
Well they already use Real Player format which now supports Vorbis and, I think, Theroa on the server side. I guess they would face the following issues...
1) Speex isn't implemented by Real Producer/Server/Player yet so it is only good for broadband where the Vorbis codec can be used. The narrow-band streams need 8kbps audio streams.
2) Users need to have a recent version of Real Player. They probably have enough problems trying to get people to use Real Player at all with Microsoft constantly trying to cut of Real's air supply, without compatibility problems with legacy players to worry about.
3) They probably have an old version of Real Server running because on a web site that big, a sys admin would not rush through upgrades if everything is working fine the way it is.
4) They are about to make thousands of employees redundant. This is probably not a good time to ask for more resources.
5) They are rolling out a DRM'd video download facility. DRM = Windows only (or Mac if you a lucky) but NOT Linux and NOT open source and NOT open standards. Maybe that's the way they are going.
The writers of this survey, though interesting, couldn't resist it, "The second place ranking for "lower cost" indicates that IT decision makers recognize that open source software is not really free.".
Really? All the survey proves is that they think less dependance on a vendor is more important than the fact the software itself may be free. It doesn't mean that it isn't free. Where did they get that conclusion from?
Some businesses may insist on having their software supported to the hilt and paying for it whereas others will get by without paying for support, the way businesses may sometimes get by using pirate software without support. They may not care as long as it works for them most of the time. If something breaks they just re-install it. Where I work we still use Win95 for some things. Is that supported? It's just never connected to the internet.
Actually by releasing Windows-only products they are signing their own death warrant.
They are making it that much more difficult for anyone planning a desktop migration to Linux because there is now one more must-have application that the users will demand that isn't available in Linux.
By halting Linux desktop migration Google reduce the mindshare of Linux generally. Right now Linux and open source in general needs more mind share so that it reaches the point where large organisations push for legislation and standards that/help/ open source instead of the current situation where we have software patents and more and more closed standards trying to lock open source out of the party.
It's ironic that Nvidia's Linux drivers are mentioned since they are one of the things that _stop_ suspend to RAM from working. I don't know if this has been fixed recently. I last upgraded about a month ago and it still didn't work.
I presntly use my Dell Inspriron 8200 more as a desktop than anything else because it is pretty-much useless as a laptop if I can't get the thing to suspend to RAM. Lord knows I've tried everything; ACPI, APM, latest kernel+patches, been there, done that, got the T-shirt. No joy.
I currently have the APM switched on and have to remember to switch off the Nvidia driver if I go anywhere where I need to flip the laptop into suspend mode.
I first saw this article yesterday and they had printed that if this magnetar was within 10 000, not 10, lightyears away then Earth would have suffered a mass extinction!
IIRC about half of the picures taken were relayed via the A channel and what we have seen is all B channel stuff only.
Any chance of reconstructing those images from the ground-based recordings of the A channel, or is the signal so weak that all that can ever be deduced is the carrier frequency, not any data?
It's probably some kind of watermarking that may be just above or below the audio band or hidden using the spectral masking effect or something. I'm guessing here.
This is probably why MS is key in this. They effectively own most of the worlds home computers so, as far as most poor souls are concerned, they decide what the computer can and can't do on behalf of Macrovision.
This is great news for open source though because no one else's software is going to take the slightest bit of notice of any watermarking in the music or video.
Also worth noting, Bill Gates is one of the world's biggest funders of measles research programs.
"Honey, I do wish you wouldn't bring your work home with you!"

Now I can pull a used PC out of the trash and create the world's best software with virtually no investment other than my time.
Uh uh! Not so fast. We have software patents to stop any such subversive activity!
I'm afraid that "A Method of Disposal via Aquaeous Defenestration into Boston Harbor" is already patented. We'll have to find something else.
And it was patented by BT on behalf of the Brits!
The best thing that could happen is that HP goes belly-up, Agilent buys the HP brand, and we are back to having a _real_ HP again :-)
Why oh why am I stuck with the sadistic sense of humor that only 3% of the population laughs hysterricly at while the other half thinks I'm psychotic.
Err... because you and 3% of the population are on LSD?
Ahhhhh! Where did the link go. Try this...a vies_And_Anuradha_Suraparaju_-_Dirac.ogg

You can find out more about it's performance and how it compares to other codecs from this lecture.
It is in Ogg/Theora format and should be viewable with RealPlayer 10+, VLC, or Flumotion.

In this case IBM is only a brand name. It is made by Lenovo. IBM have sold their PC making business to them.

Either VLC or the latest version of Real Player should play it.
However the streams are a bit sketchy right now, probably due to the Slashdot effect.

That would also explain why Swansea is disproportionately large on the map.

Amen to that!

I cannot help but wonder whether top level management at MS got a bad batch of LSD and its done something to their brains.
:-)
Hey! It worked for Steve Jobs
Apt-get is easy to use but all the questions it asks when you do an update mean that you can't leave it on auto pilot.
Personally, my favourite right now is the Synaptic-Apt-for-RPM combo. That's why I just switched from Kanotix to PCLinuxOS.
I first saw this article yesterday and they had printed that if this magnetar was within 10 000, not 10, lightyears away then Earth would have suffered a mass extinction!
Now, that would be worrying.
" If the sun was only 10 kilometres from your house, a mass extinction might occur."
What? The goldfish might die?

"the only thing China is really good at is copying and making things very cheap."
I remember the same was said of the Japanese in the 70s.
