Quite. Back when the "martian meteorite" was in the news, the scientists released a cautious statement along the lines of "Well, we think that maybe the structures in the meteorite appear to bear a certain resemblence to those formed by bacteria on Earth, which, if this is the case suggests that maybe there might have been life on Mars in the past. Of course, we need to investigate a lot more."

The next day, the front page on The Sun shouted "LIFE ON MARS! IT'S OFFICIAL!!!"

Debate is not the way to determine the truth of an issue. If the creationists have any good evidence that can stand up to scrutiny, let them publish it in reputable journals as all scientists do. Instead, they write books which are published by rich creationist organisations. This is not the way to do science.

There have actually been a number of debates between scientists and creationists, but the only thing the creationists do is attack evolution and make emotional appeals to the audience, they never, ever present any evidence for creationism. Because there is none.

Scientists realised long ago that debating creationists is playing into their hands, and making it appear that creationism is somehow deserving of the same attention as the theory of evolution, which it is not.

If you have evidence, publish it.

"Why did you pay for it? Why not just download it?"
"Well, because that's stealing. I'd rather pay so that the artists I like get some money for the work they do, and stealing is wrong."
"But it's not stealing, because it's free. How can you steal something that's free?"
"It's only free because people illegally copied it and put on the net. You still end up with a product you should have paid for."

But even if Lucent were to win, isn't MPEG2 a software thing?

Kind of. It is possible to decode MPEG entirely in software (I know, I've done it) but it is a real nightmare. The only way to do it sensibly is to use hardware for lowest level of the decoding and colour conversion (and everything else, preferably). This is why most graphics cards have MPEG decoding built in.

Untangling the bitstream is horrible in software as well, as there are one or more interleaved audio/video streams which need to be stripped out, and each stream is made up of Huffman-encoded numbers of varying bit-sizes which cross byte boundaries, which involves much annoying bit-twiddling to make sense of. Untanging/unencoding/decompressing/converting all this is best left to hardware.

As to why I let myself in for that horror, I worked for a crazy person who wanted it.

ID is creationism, and all ID proponents are creationists who probably believe pretty much the same things as you do.

And yet I do believe that God created the universe and everything in it less than 10,000 years ago. Furthermore, I believe that the search for evidence supporting this hypothesis is scientific

Science, by definition, cannot include the supernatural simply because it is impossible to test for it. The search for a supernatural explanation can never be scientific. You may say "God created the world by supernatural means", but someone else may say "Millions of fairies from the 12th dimension created the world by supernatural means". How is it possible to test either of those?

Once you allow the supernatural in, anything can thought up as an "explanation" and science is broken.

Also, I recommend you have a read through the FAQs at www.talkorigins.org as they will likely address all your concerns about the age of the Earth, etc.

afaik the only difference between evolution and intelligent design is that intelligent design claims statistics is insufficient and a divine guiding hand was required

Absolutely incorrect, sorry. ID is nothing more than creationism, and invariably young-earth creationism at that. When pressed, IDers will tell you the usual creationist nonsense, like the Earth only being 6000 years old and even that the entire planet was flooded recently. The sole purpose of ID is to disguise creationism enough to try to get it into science classes, as they realise that evolution is a direct threat to their particular brand of Christianity.

It's enormously amusing listening to IDers being interviewed and squirming to avoid the question of who this "Designer" might be. "Why yes, Jesus is my Personal Lord And Saviour, but as to who the Designer is... Oh, I couldn't possibly imagine!"
