Happy birthday SLACKWARE and a GREAT BIG _THANK YOU_ to you Patrick for your awesome work!
With tears in my eyes I remember all the great moments Slackware has brought to my life. Patrick and others who work on Slackware, you should be proud! When a job is done well it is done the way you guys do it.
So did anyone ever win that $200,000 prize? Would this qualify?
Nope. This will not qualify. With this solution you still have to replace the original BIOS chip with a new one. Besides the prize was split half. The X-box hackers already got $100,000 by making Linux run on X-box with custom BIOS chip.
To get that additional $100,000 prize no hardware modifications can be done to make Linux work on X-box. ---
Interesting story.. Here's something related: Humanoid robot ASIMO designed by Honda. Check out these impressive movies (realplayer format supported) of ASIMO in action. It would be nice to have one around to clean up the flat for example;)
What about the early demos from a group called Sorcerers? Sorcerers was probably the first PC demo group ever their first intros being from March, 1989. First demo was released in May, 1989 at it was called Summer Holiday celebrating the fact that "School's Out";) Future Crew came soon after, but Sorcerers was first. BTW, they happened to be from the same city.
Some of the historical Sorcerers demos can be found here! Unfortunately the first intros aren't listed there. ---
..since 1998. So, I may ask - is this really any news? I personally feel that Enlightenment (be it 16.5 or E17) fits me perfectly. Something between a regular desktop and a shell. I don't need anything else. Why should I? ---
Quite touching...really. When I looked at those pictures I had a strange feeling - it was very unusual feeling that I can not explain. I felt something I have never felt before.
The original version of the famous 'Hacker's Manifesto' was published on some early issue of Phrack. What hacker's manifesto? The one that The Mentor wrote and the same that was used in 'Hackers' -movie. ----
Uh, the game was owned by 3DRealms, not William Scarboro. You have a problem with that?
Well I do have a problem when a game (ANY GAME!) is being advertised on Slashdot and one of the developers has died.
What exactly is 3D Realms? Who can I contact regarding this matter? Would someone please give me an e-mail address of that person? GPLing the source might sound oh - so noble, but somehow I feel disgusted about this matter. I sure hell ain't the only one. ----
..for BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN and THE E-STREET BAND! We're having a Christmas party here in Finland and the house is *ROCKING* - thanks to Bruce's records!
Mod this down if you really have to - We just felt like we _needed_ to say that even nerds can have fun on weekends;) Greetings flies to New Jersey;) Happy Christmas and Merry New Year!
We're a bit drunk, but hey - we're having fun;) ----
Ahoy all Linux and *BSD developers! INTERESTING technical question! Is it possible to port Linux/*BSD to this device? It would be interesting to know. The CPU is 32-bit ARM9-based RISC CPU. That would make it the first cellphone to run a Unix like OS. Boy, would it be cool to have Unix like OS running on this!
You seem to know a lot about the great old days. Please do them a favour and create that webpage if you feel like it! A lot of people would probably like to know what these guys are doing nowadays.
Yeah! You are one of the few people who is "oldschool" enough to know about these Sorcerers intros. They were indeed the very first ones. I believe they can still be obtained from BCG's box.
Sorcerers released a CGA-gfx demo called "Summer Holiday" in May, 1989. Atom was released in October, 1990 - so there's a big gap between the first intros and Atom.
Sorcerers was the first PC demo group and the first group to create text mode demos ever. Those guys were from my hometown Turku, Finland. They (BCG, Ranger, Luke) formed their group in spring, 1989. BCG and Luke were 16 years old, Ranger had just turned 15.
Someone probably says that Atom was their first text-mode demo. That wasn't. They had released at least 2 text mode demos before Atom. First one was released on March, 1989.
BCG - one of the members who formed Sorcerers can be reached through his BBS. You can also find the old Sorcerers demos there on the download section. BCG's box can be reached HERE!

Ja tänään vetäsen perseet olalle!
Now a Linux development kit for symbian would be nice though.
Yeah, it would, wouldn't it? Why don't you go and download it for free here!

This seems like a traditional finnish party. You better not go if you can't drink booze ;)
Think I'm kidding? No, I'm not. Check out these pictures from finnish geek parties!

ESR also links to DeCSS - although the link seems to work randomly (didn't work yesterday, today it was OK).

You'd think that there'd be LESS stress with an elecronic keyboard than a mechanical one.
Yeah, I think so too, but what do you guys think about this computer chair?
---
In the article, shouldn't the computers be ASCI Blue and ASCI White, not "ASCII" ??
:)
You insensitive nitpicking clod, yes. You are right.

If I have understood it correctly, it is mainly Microsoft that is firing programmers in USA and hiring programmers in India.
Yet they are the first one to say that Linux is un-American.

I wonder what will happen to their ANTI-UNIX campaign now ? I mean - seriously - how can anybody take them seriously now ?

No, it's not a clone of Mac OS X. That project is unique and it implements a totally new UI that runs on top of KDE.
Didn't you know that you can have Quicktime in Linux? ..Windows media too. It's called MPlayer and it can be reached here!

Nokia's Communicator cellphone has included RealPlayer for at least 1.5 years.
