  12. One topic of interest... on What Kind of Books do You Want? · · Score: 1

I'd like to see some more clearly written, in-depth books on streaming media administration, particularly on-the-fly encoding and distribution using Windows 2000 Server as the platform. PS e-books suck! : )

  13. Connectivity as a basic right on Govt Says: Internet Is Popular · · Score: 2, Insightful

The interesting thing to me is the extent to which Internet connectivity is (rightly) viewed as an unsupportable luxury in so many households. What I hope to see in the near future is the "normalization" of internet service, to the point where it is included as part of your utility bill. The government could help this along by promoting the idea of, and provideing incentives for, Internet access as a basic right on the level of shelter and food. It's a fascinating time to be alive....

  14. Improving usablility on RMS Asks Miguel to Explain Himself · · Score: 5, Insightful

This is a *little* disconcerting for some, but I applaud Miguel's willingness to embrace the technologies he feels are best, regardless of the political fallout. Given the amount of XML stuff in Ximian Gnome / Nautilus etc, it only seems natural to move towards more RPC based standards. The fact that one of them is being developed by Microsoft should not IMHO be an obstacle to progress. Now if they would just fix the fonts! ; )

  15. The hardware is the software on Arguing A.I. · · Score: 3, Interesting

One thing that's always bothered me about the AI debate is that the thinking for a long time has centered around how to model intelligence on silicon. To me the true marvel of the mind is the holographic quality of intelligence and the way in which the physical form of the brain influences, and is shaped by, the quality and nature of one's thoughts. It will be exciting to see what part the new polymers can play in this research.

  17. Actually Useful on ElcomSoft Files For Dismissal Of E-Book Case · · Score: 5, Interesting

OK, I'm guilty - I have tried ElcomSoft's E-Book processor. A client sent a PDF that was locked to the point where we couldn't even print it. They refused to send an unprotected copy, so I unprotected the one we had and printed the puppy. I was tempted to send them the printout but decided that getting paid would be better. : )

  18. Scalability? on Hot New Silicon Graphics Workstations · · Score: 1

How scalable is SGI's architecture compared to, say, a renderfarm running over Sun's Grid engine on Linux? This always needs to be factored into cost analysis, doesn't it?

  19. Don't know about you but... on Digital Lifestyle · · Score: 5, Funny

  25. Timing is everything on Last Word on Loki · · Score: 2, Interesting

I think if Loki was just getting started today their chances of success would be much higher. That's often the way it is in technology; the true innovators (Amiga, anyone?)are lost in the rush to succeed. It would have been nice to see Mandrake hire these guys to develop for their Gaming Edition. Loki may have been the first, but they won't be the last..The best is yet to come!
