  1. Just like real life on Online Gambling Running Out of Steam · · Score: 1

When I moved to Reno 6 years ago from Seattle (dont ask), gambling seemed like a fun and novel way to blow some extra cash.

In real life I think that part of the appeal of gambling is that it can't be done everywhere.

After a couple weeks, the novelty wore off. I don't think this is exactly rocket surgery. You could probably survey residents in any given town where gambling is legal and find that most of them don't really gamble very often. Those that do, in my experience are usually suffering from some sort of gambling addiction.

When you make everyone's hometown a 'virtual gambling town' you shouldnt be surprised to see the same sort thing, addicts stay and everyone else gets over it.

I dont really care for this analogy. On the internet, advertising unfortunately almost always takes the form of something extra smacked right on top of your content and in a lot of cases you have to 'deal with it' before you can actually get to the content. This is annoying.

I think a more accurate analogy would be a newspaper with a bunch of leaflets attached to the outside, where you have to pull them all of in order to get to the actual news in the paper.

Or a magazine with 100 reply cards inside of it that you have to dispose of before you can just sit down and enjoy the read.

Mr. Smith, If you dont want people to block your advertising content don't throw it up in their face and make them 'deal with it' before they can get what they are looking for.

It's a shame this wasn't designed as anything more than a toy. The features, from what I gather in the software seem to be pretty powerful. It appears to display the beat count graphically where each notch is a beat, and the distance between each notch is a nice heads up indicator of the tempo of the song. Pretty neat concept. It's not the first time it has been done, but it is definately a great way to "See" what you are hearing.

If they could incorporate some sort of Final Scratch type interface, or even a custom controller (think mixer and 2 turntables) I could seriously consider buying it for use as rig for mixing mp3s. Pop the PS2, the nonexistant custom controller and a small LCD into a mobile rack and you could have a kick ass platform for mobile mixing of digital audio files.

Of all the assumptions you can make about unreleased hardware, I think it is safe to say that Apple devices will cost more than (Any comparable device from mfgr X)...perceived value aside.

This is also based on my previous knowlege of iRiver and Apple pricing schemes. The 20gb Ihp-120 runs about $349 vs $399 for a 20gb iPod.

Its cheaper, but not quite as good looking or easy to use as the iPod...as an mp3 player

The killer feature for the new iRiver devices is the recording ability. iPod and a handful of other devices can record voice at a low bitrate.

The iRiver (IHP-120 and i am assuming the new models) can record from a digital input or microphone into a high quality mp3 or wav file.

So in addition to being a decent mp3 platform, it could also stand to replace portable MD and DAT recorders. This is a great thing for musicians and bootleggers. While the onboard mic-preamp isn't the best in the world, it appears to be from what Ive read, suitable for most applications.
