Blacks are also 2 to 3 times more likely to be poor. Perhaps being poor is what makes the percentage higher for committing crimes.

How many black Doctors or Teachers commit crimes? My guess would be the same or lower as compared to whites.

  3. Is There Any Chance Of Sentient Beings? on Astronomers Discover 13 New Fast Radio Bursts From Deep Space (nationalgeographic.com) · · Score: 2

I would like to know if this is a natural phenomenon or is it possible it is from sentient beings. There is no indication in the summary.

So if it is from a natural phenomenon, please indicate this in the summary and the discussion will proceed in a normal scientific manner.

Otherwise this is an extremely important discovery - mainly the repeating signals.

  4. This is how you do suspense on NASA's InSight Successfully Lands on Mars (theverge.com) · · Score: 5, Insightful

I am glad the NASA commentators were not constantly talking during the 7 minute landing sequence. This is how you build suspense. By not talking and letting the time flow and the suspense build. Hollywood could learn a lot by watching this NASA landing event.

    Well done.

I think they should start with the area around Howland Island. They can use this to shake out the technology and perhaps locate the Electra from Amelia Earhart.

  10. Published vs Personal Best Photos on Interviews: Ask Rachel Sussman About Photography and the Oldest Living Things · · Score: 3

I am curious if your own best photos are different than your best published photos. I would think published photos would need to appeal to a larger audience while personal best photos only need to appeal to you. Have you ever had an editor say no to a photo that you thought was brilliant or amazing?

  12. Re:Congratulations on Is Computer-Created Art, Art? · · Score: 2, Insightful

I disagree that art is purely something that is to be seen. Equally important is who created the art originally. If Bill Gates and Leonardo da Vinci both created a doodle, which one would be more art? When I look at a drawing or painting, I want to know who made it and when was it made. Art made hundreds of years ago is much more emotionally pleasing than art made today. Modern artists today will create paintings similar to cave drawings from 20,000 years ago, but seeing a real cave drawing is much more enjoyable than seeing a modern artist knockoff of it.

  14. Dark matter vs. our matter on Dark Energy Confirmed · · Score: 2, Interesting

When I first studied cosmology, I wanted the theories to work out so our universe would be a series of Big Bangs that would go on infinitely. This would mean we were all part of a never ending series of events that can lead to sentient life. Now that Dark Matter is gaining acceptence, it changes things.

If the Big Bang was a one time event, and the Universe will expand forever then the question is how did this first and only Big Bang happen. What forces were at work prior to the Big Bang?

While this knowledge won't have a meterial effect on me, as I age, it's nice to know things of such a grand scale especially if the knowledge is confirmed to be true.

I hope physicists continue to make progress on Dark Matter and that Slashdot keeps posting such articles. Although I would prefer it to be on the main page.
