You make an interesting point. One benefit imho is patching a windows box is easier than on unix's(i said easier not better). You just download the file or click automatic update and it is pretty much brain-less. But if MS keeps screwing it up, people lose faith, one more reason to jump ship.
I think you will see a push back less importance on graphics. Why?
Because I think in the next five years, the graphics will be become picture-like and developers will have to figure out a way to stand-out. They won't be able to do it with graphics so a more creative game will be the best way to stand out. Of course I very well could be dead wrong.
I am a big fan of FreeBSD and one of those dreaded Christians.
I feel thinking the daemon is satanic is quite silly, but none the less it happens.
I also think FreeBSD would be wise to change the icon if even ever so slighty. But I would be shocked to see it happen. It might cause more than good. Maybe a second icon?
Because you will adopt a kid and then the father who could card less gets talked into filing for custody(by his mother), when the child is 2 years old. You lose the court case and the child is taken away from you.
There are big problems with adoption policies in the us. Why do you so many people look overseas to adopt?
>If Stallman has done all that much damage to Open source with the GNU/Linux thing, then why (from a marketing standpoint) is Linux >winning so much mind share compared to BSD?
Completely useless point, there are plenty of non-GPL software projects out there dominant their field(Apache is one that comes to mind).
I have read the GPL manifesto let's see what it says:
"What the facts show is that people will program for reasons other than riches; but if given a chance to make a lot of money as well, they will come to expect and demand it. Low-paying organizations do poorly in competition with high-paying ones, but they do not have to do badly if the high-paying onesare banned."
"Proprietary software is antisocial, so developing it is wrong. In most cases, the user of proprietary software is expected to promise not to share with anyone else. It's wrong to make that agreement, wrong to keep it if you have made it, and especially wrong to lure someone else into making such a promise. Using part of the proceeds of this antisocial activity for a worthy cause cannot justify it."
Alright I will go ahead and say what I would like to see, in this and future rpg's.
Time.
Time becomes important, meaning that the "evil wizard" is actually gaining power as the game progresses. Maybe in the beginning of the game, you have a few missions. Choose one and your guys can handle it, but while your characters get stronger so does the enenmy on the other missions. This would make it less linear and increase re-playability. Are any games already doing this type of thing?
Are we talking GPL stuff here? BSD-type license? Or software that you pay for, but they give you source-code?
I am ok with the later two, but the more I read about the GPL the more I am against it.
Whoops, I thought you were talking about a new compression format not a app.
Silly Quill.
We would want to use it because everyone else does.
and why would that be, exactly?
Funny, I used Linux off and on for a couple of years.
I then switched to FreeBSD and I thought the install was so much easier and ports was so much easier I never went back, and never plan to.
Not saying folks should switch just that I much prefer freebsd over the lini I have tried. I just found it to be much easier in almost everyway.
A better question might be why isn't netbsd used in more embedded devices than linux.
Let me here them I am curious.
Your missing the point.
FreeBSD goal is not to rule the world or take on Microsoft.
It is quite simply to help everyone by making an excellent OS.
I think they have done quite well.
Of course iceworld would be easier...
How about nVidia simply improved their drivers.
Get an old P-166 stripped with stripped down Win98 or Linux/FreeBSD.
This way when the latest/greatest game comes out, you GPA won't go to the corner and commit suicide,
so to speak.
Of course NetHack runs on anything, but maybe it's not your style.
Actually i do use vim I just call just it vi
And no multiple undo is a blessing, for the likes of me.
>I have the chord Control-Alt-Z set up to launch the trusty ol' Notepad (no better application for writing HTML).
:-)
Ahhhh, 2nd year CS students could write a better editor.
vi, my friend, vi
even emacs is better
No wonder he worried about CTS

Good Lord, what has he done.
The jokes are endless.

>Does this mean only 600,000 XP users trust Windows Update?
Umm... NO. It doesn't.
And stop taking cheap shots at MS, it just make you look like a whiny school kid.
There is plenty of reasons to bash MS policies and software, but the signal-to-noise ratio is getting silly.

I (briefly) looked into NWN to see what could be done, it seemed it wouldn't do well under this scenerio. Perhaps I should try again.

There's plenty more.

I'll stop here.
Oh yes, I also remember:
Fire Horn and HEAL
You are correct 1987 is too late, I played BT on a c64 in jr high. 1985 sounds more accurate.
