Play Counter-Strike For Real
An anonymous reader writes "Fradley Airfield, England; A group of obsessive Counter-Strike fans are attempting to recreate one of the game's most popular maps, de_dust, for real. When the MDF masterpiece is complete, hopefully late this summer, the site will be used by paintballers dressed as Counter-Strike players who will battle it out over 4-5 weekends worth of paint splattered mayhem. A petition campaigning for someone to accurately recreate DOAX: Beach Volleyball is expected to be up and running within the week."
OMG!! BS!!! AIMBOT
Every Friday we take far too many 'pills' during the evenings fun and my bedroom appears to me like the Pac Man maze. I even make low frequency beeping sounds while walking around lost.
There have been so many people i've really wanted to shoot so this works out great.
Do you want a head shot first though? Maybe its better to go for the limbs.
Cheers for the effort, although I think you'll still get people bunny-jumping.

Will bunny hopping be allowed? Talk about Matrix within a Matrix...
Of the aftermath. And, what are the rules? NVG? Hearbeat detectors? What about paint-grenades? Tripwires? This could get ugly. But fun, hehehe. We should do something like that over here in the States.
What, me Tweet?
Many big paintball sites (both indoors and outdoors) spend a lot of time thinking out layouts that are both playable and fun. If this experiment proves successful, maybe some of them will consider taking a cue from layouts that have seen literally thousands of hours of playtesting. What remains to be seen is if a layout that is suitable for playing electronically really is as fun when "in the flesh". I could imagine having to remain alive pressing a button on a wall for 30 seconds to actually get it to open (ENG. planting dynamite anyone?) or having to follow an armored buggy on a terrain to complete objectives (à la Enemy Territory fuel_dump). Shivers... I'd actually have a chance at becoming *fit*!
That would be "for real" in the sense of "make believe, in a different way", not "planting a bomb somewhere and trying not to get killed by the SAS".
I am suspicious of a website with only a flash intro and no mention of:
1) Chosen site
2) Plans
3) Who's paying for the construction costs
4) Pictures
etc.
I mean, if you're going to hype it up, give us something to be hyped about. I'm not buying plane tickets 2 months in advanced if I can't be sure to see a spectacle.

For those people who play counter strike (well), they know that de_dust is probably one of the most unbalanced maps out there. There is definately a favortism towards the ct side. So I am surprised they picked that one, even if it is popular. Playing this game using paintball would be fun though. It would definately favor the side with faster runners. The quicker teams can get to the choke points and secure them...game over.

I'm sure a TON of bikini clad babes will sign up for that!
"Accurately recreate", HAHaha!
Remind me stay far far away from whatever beach ya'll will be using for this.
Operator, give me the number for 911!
Terrorists camp:
"Go B" "GO B" "Go B"
"howd they kill me so fast?!"
"Shit Bubba, broke his leg!"
"leave him, there comming!"
"But hes got the bomb!"
"take it"
Bubba:
"No, ill be ok, im still at 50%, there just n00bz you know"
This sounds like a great idea! Not too long ago, me and my friends were talking about how we should set up a paintball match instead of getting together for the usual Halo night we have every month or so. Going back to the basics and actually playing CTF in a real environment, with real pain would really make you play harder and smarter. Back in the day we used to frequent some nice outdoor arenas as well as some close quarter indoor events.
I think it's pure brilliance to have CS maps translated to real life, especially if the people playing are CS jockies. Knowing a map/arena before you play could definitely have some nice advantages.
Of course, now me and about half of my friends have office jobs and we are a little out of shape so it could be a little more challenging..
Here's hoping that my wish will come true some day, real CTF with my friends and some ATVs in a simulated Blood Gulch level. Drool...
They should have picked de_vertigo. Then I could take the bomb and throw it off the edge of the map. Or as_oilrig. Just for the novelty of building an oilrig.
;-)
Thinking about it, it seems it would be very difficult to reconstruct any CS map realistically at all. in Dust, I could see maybe recreating the area where the CTs start, but to do the entire map would be a huge expense to do it correctly. I mean, how would you create the bridge? Are they actually building a stone bridge? While they're at it, have them do de_cbble, I'd like to see the sniper tower they'd build.
rooooar
I realize that most paintball arenas are pretty bland, with basically just a bunch of trees and such, but occasionally you'll get a well-designed course, complete with overturned carriages, small wooden buildings, etc. I wonder if anyone's attempted to recreate one of their local paintball arenas and used it for practice. It would be a hell of a lot cheaper than wasting paintballs and paying time on the course if you were going to a tourney there or something.
Trolls lurk everywhere. Mod them down.
What are the chances that a bunch of CS players who are used to spinning 180's over a few centimeters of hand movement are going to be very good at the physical aspects of real-life paintball, like running and most importantly aim/handling of paintball guns?
This would probably be a blast, but not terribly competitive. Sure, you might get to the checkpoint first, but you still have to HIT the opponent with your paintballs, and I doubt a ton of computer jockeys are very good at that.
I'll definitely be watching to see how it goes though, very interesting idea.
Let's think about this for a second...
Crossmap headshots ("snipping") is nearly impossible with paintguns. At long range, the paint loses velocity and won't break.
The other common cs tactic is shooting at point blank range...which is a BIG paintball no-no. Most fields require that you yell out "surrender!" instead...but years of CS makes for an itchy trigger finger.
And let's not even think about all the broken legs as people try to jump down ramps, etc...
Finally, the "rushing" tactic so common in CS is suicide in PB. No lag to save you during the sudden encounters that ensue. Winning requires MUCH different tactics (accurate shooting, stealth, knowing how to take cover, etc).
And at most fields *any* hit disqualifies you. You get hit on the back heal of your shoe and you're out. (Of course, you can "remedy" this by becoming a "wiper" - something that the vast majority of CS players will do I'm sure).
Indeed, hard-core CSers with no PB experience are in for a shock. The skills are NOT transferable.
On the other hand...maybe the field will set up a "variant" with weird CS inspired rules (only chest and headshots kill, for example). But then, people who actually want to do something lame like that might as well join a "heavy weapons" SCA club or something.
Sounds like it should be fun, but the translation of fun in video game vs. fun in RL is often a shaky one. There is a paintball site in my local area that runs a "protect the President" game ala Team Fortress which is fun, but breaks down very fast into a standard paintball shootout. Right up until the Prez gets shot-Hmmm. Maybe it was more fun than I remember...

Of course iceworld would be easier...
"A petition campaigning for someone to accurately recreate DOAX: Beach Volleyball is expected to be up and running within the week" .. and in other news, firefighters struggled to put out the flames of MMORPG geeks who had attempted to recreate the Plane of Fire.
Airsoft guns are authentic-looking firearm replicas which shoot 6mm plastic BBs either by using compressed air or gas as propellant. Most electric compressed air guns are have selectable full-/semi-auto operation and gas-operated semiautomatic pistols load a new round by realistically recoiling the slide (which in most guns locks back after the last round is fired). Just about every gun featured on CS is also available as an airsoft gun (the Five-seveN, AWM and Scout are not, AFAIK).
Take a look at these guns which have been reviewed at a popular UK news site. Also, airsoft players tend to aim for ultimate realism in combat gear. Teams such as Team Red Cell or Team 2 Hit 6 display great dedication to their hobby and the photos of them in action may just as well be of actual HRT/SOG operations (note that every pic in which they have their goggles off are posed - eye protection is mandatory during gameplay).
Most games, independent of their length in time, can be described as one team attempting to accomplish an objective ("bomb" a target, seize a hill, clear a building, etc) whereas the other tries to stop them. Pretty much what people do on CS, right? I've also designed and built a "bomb simulator" which mimics the bomb on CS as closely as possible. :)
Oh yeah, close-quarters battle with paintball guns isn't nice - getting shot at a range of less than 10ft makes really nasty big bleeding bruises. Although airsoft BBs do have a greater velocity, their inertia is smaller due to a small mass (0.2g to 0.43g, depends on which you use) and they impact on a smaller area. This makes the hits sting but usually they just slightly break the skin (through a camo BDU, of course). Do note that airsoft guns don't leave paint marks so each player must play honestly and call themselves out if they're hit - people who play in "godmode" are not looked well upon.
Just bring my real Aug and my MP5. I can carry way more than 4 clips for my MP5. 9mm bullets are soooooo cheap here in redneck land $5.50/100.
BTW I'm kidding, this would be very interesting to see.
Isn't it interesting that first CS imitates paintball(ever play one of the speedball maps?), then paintball imitates CS?
I tried it and I just don't see the appeal. You can't tell who's on your team, the random jitter on your aiming is maddening, and if you die you have to wait around for 10 minutes. Terrible! I like the idea of team-oriented play and limited weapons, but the other stuff is just misery.
"A petition campaigning for someone to accurately recreate DOAX: Beach Volleyball is expected to be up and running within the week."
Have you any idea of the amount of silicon it would take to power that?
I would think that if they wanted to recreate CS with the most realism, they'd go with Airsoft guns instead of paintball. Much more realistic, plus, there are Airsoft versions of many of the CS weapons. There's an airsoft group here in the Seattle area called PSAC (www.psac.org) that has games that are very much like what they are talking about-- only they are in no way trying to emulate CS.
If you don't know what I'm talking about. Go someplace like www.redwolfairsoft.com and find out.

:)
Actually, this may be not so far from reality. In paintball games, you are to yell out, "surrender!", but you *may* fire. How do I know this? One game my gun jammed, and I had no choice but to dash in and force people to surrender. After 3 "kills", I snuck up on one person and, at point blank range yelled, "surrender". The girl replied, "No", then shot me! In retrosepct, it was pretty amusing. From this, I learned to yell "surrender", then shoot.
Maybe I can finally play cs w/o worrying about haxoring or stupid bunny-jumpers or crouching-whores. Now if my team mates just dont shoot me.... Damn AWPhores, now ill get picked off and not have an excuse to blame it on. Oh shit, i guess that means playing CS in my underwear is out then. ;)
So, is this thing going to have the sky-walking hack too? Maybe they need to paint the sky the same as de_dust on a big dome covering "the map" and have a big plexi-glass or glass platform above the level so u can be a skywalker too. =)
Man, these people have way to much free time. Maybe I should make an IRL version of Commander Keen or Doom levels.
The biggest trick the devil pulled was letting lawyers become politicians so they can write the laws.
Well, I think in about like 10 years time, we would have mastered bio-feedback, or whatever, and have it so it detects our physical attributes. Instead of everyone being the same size, look, whatnot, it would be much more interesting if everyone played as themselves. After all, CS is supposed to be a team-based game, and a team means each person brings different skills to the table. Still, the current mouse/keyboard combination isn't the best way to play FPSes yet, as I'd rather play with a gun. It gives you a certain satisfication when you actually get a headshot with your own bare hands... Imagine having to do weights so you can actually pick up the para and run with it in the future... ;)
Founder of Mirror Moon - Tsukihime Game Trans
Next thing you know someone is going to be complaining about a cheater, and someone AWP'ing and this person is ghosting, this person is bleh . . . etc etc etc. Sounds rather annoying to me.
... Sounds like a great way to get a shot in the crotch. Ouch.
I'd be playing kiss the dirt, personally...
I can see the cast of characters now:
- The AWP Whore - The Master of a weapon everyone hates.
- The Hacker - Can't play CS and master it on his own so he cheats his way to a greater self-esteem.
- The Server Admin with a God Complex - Usually 12 years old and loves to run the admin_rape or admin_llama command on anyone at the drop of a hat.
- The Whiner - No bottles of wine here! This person loves to whine about people who are kicking his ass and can't figure out how to get better at the game.
- The Camper - No tents, no campfire. He just likes to sit in places on the map that none of the action on the map is near.
- The Scardey n00b - This person is afraid to take risks and usually looses the round for his team.
- The n00b - This person usually runs around the map not knowing what to do. They also seem to never be able to get out of their spawn without firing a shot.
- And don't forget the rest of the cast of individuals who never play as a team and only care about their score.
This sounds like a mess of fun....NOT!
