New law in Alaska doesn't let the Governor appoint a replacement for empty congressional seats. People were unhappy when newly elected Governor Frank Murkowski appointed his daughter, Lisa, to the Senate seat he vacated in order to move into the Governor's Mansion.
I wondered if that would sit wrong with the people of Alaska, and I'm glad that something was done. From your name (and knowledge) I would guess you're an Alaskan - congratulations on doing the right thing. I figured the only possible scenario this would've been acceptable is if she was an active politician herself and actually been the appropriate replacement. Other than that scenario it reeks like hell.
I do believe that CmdrTaco loves itwhole heartedly. Frankly it doesn't fit into my viewing habits, and seems to me to be a waste of time. If I want to point and click I'll play a game. If I want to read something I will use the old discussion system.
The White House is planning on vetoing it [washingtonpost.com].
i was opposed to the bill till i saw this post
You were opposed to the bill till you saw that the administration was going to veto it? As if anything that Bush doesn't like you automatically like? That is not fair, rarely is something the Republicans/Democrats doing good whereas what the other wants is bad. Both parties are total cronies - ala the democrats say they want to end the war to get into power then fail on their promises and do nothing. There are so many examples. I would say that this bill is bad whether or not Bush likes it or not. Hopefully he will not see it on his desk with this electronic transaction reporting in place.
Duuuude. cayenne8, don't have kids; for your sake if not for societie's. You are soooo not ready to deal with the problems that come up with even "normal" kids if you actually feel the way you've posted. I don't know about your genes but your moral compass appears to be pointing only inward, and that can't be good for the species.
I don't feel it is fair that this post was modded troll and down to -1. Especially the middle sentence is at least worthy of view and or discussion. I think it brings up a reasonable point and to mod the whole comment down seems unfair. The general comment of moral compass likely was enough to offend those who whole-heartedly believe in the mother's choice to abort - modding down so emphatically on just that is unfair.
IronPort went as far as to do pharmacological testing on the products, and found that two-thirds of the drugs contained the wrong dosage of the active ingredient, and the rest were placebos.
how about if the little guy writes software, and everyone who buys it goes straight to ebay and resells it, without uninstalling...
then the little guy is out of business...
No, then maybe the little guy needs to reevaluate the price of his product (or levels and quality of support) since people are willing to spend considerably less to buy an unsupported version of the product from ebay. If people don't need or want support then he could look at selling his product for substantially less then he currently believes it to be worth.
I don't really think it is fair to mark this post as troll, however as others have stated it is also not fair to try to divert discussion away from what should be outcry against these Syrian actions. Also, you are wrong:
Funny how Americans are so concerned about Syria but not what happens in their own country.
Notice how in the article it said:
Civil libertarians also expressed alarm.
"It appears that the statute under which Mr. Iqbal is being prosecuted includes a First Amendment exemption that prevents the government from punishing people for importing news communications," Donna Lieberman, executive director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement. "Such an exemption is constitutionally necessary, and the fact that the government is proceeding with the prosecution in spite of it raises serious questions about how free our marketplace of idea is."
There was outcry that Javed was charged... and likely convicted. I tried googling for more information but found nothing as per a result. Hopefully he was treated fairly, though our current federal government is probably legally retarded.
I seem to remember they were ambivalent toward people taping their concerts early on too.
They still basically are. If you buy a live recording off their site it is in mp3 or FLAC and has no DRM on it, they basically even say they are ok with you giving the live show stuff to friends.
On a side note: they have started playing stuff from...And Justice For All live now, so hopefully they have come full circle as a band and are ready to put out another great album. I know everyone here is talking about the release dynamics instead of what this next album may be, but I have hope that it will be a great album. (Their Hole in the Sky cover at Ozzy's induction was good as well.) In the end none of this really matters as the rest of the Metal landscape has basically moved on and Metallica are currently historical relics. Anyways, hopefully their second album with Trujillo will be better than their first.
By the way, 0 degrees fahrenheit isn't all that cold...
That is what I was thinking the whole time. Living in upper South Dakota this winter we were basically below zero degrees fahrenheit for over two months straight this year. 0C/32F is not that cold, and once you get up to about 5C it feels quite nice.
I don't see how you could possibly think that it would go anywhere but to the previous owner.... However if he does that, his taxes will go way up, and he has to decide if the IP is really worth that much, and if it really is worth a BILLION dollars, and no more, he'll sell.
Well said, though I am out of mod points. +1 Insightful/DuhBitchSlap!
People may go to other news sites, but Slashdot's user base is unique and its the discussion of issues like these that has me reading them...
I am reading this discussion, only to see the discussion of how or why this would be on Slashdot. We have seen in the past (or recent history) that Taco has said that he has had to make concessions on some issues to please the powers that be. Other things he won't compromise on. So if this (posting mainstream news and breaking the basic vision of slashdot) is how he compromises then this is not the end of the world. That said, I do wish this wasn't on slashdot.
First, yes, your God does say it is okay to kill people for your own benefit. Apparently the usage of the words Kill and Murder have been blurred since I see people using the word kill so often. The God of the Old Testament forbids "murder." Who in their right mind would choose to be so misled as to think that killing is never acceptable? Then again he says Dude, my God doesn't say it is okay to kill people for your own benefit and that by doing so you'll get 72 virgins when you die. which is not as vague as what you were talking about.
What do you think is harder: building a bridge, which people have been doing for centuries, or engineering Windows Vista, which was a completely unprecedented feat?
Wow, I don't know if you are being serious or sarcastic. Not to mention I think you need to swap where you placed the words "engineering" and "building."
You think a revolution is going to help? Replacing one government with another is only a temporary reprieve. Once the generation that dragged the last batch of tyrants to the guillotine dies off, people will forget what happened and grow complacent. ...
Go ahead and have your revolution. Found a new government on the ashes of the old. Swear in a new parliament while the heads of the old rot on pikes. It won't help you for long. You will get fooled again.
No, we will not get fooled again, the next generation will. (Unless you mean "You", as in, society.) Really all we can do is try. Try to set a good example for the next generation. Bending over with no lube for Real ID and other national identification cards is not a good example. May I present you with something. I made the post by James Noble, I am James Noble, that is my name. Many people agreed with me. My post was ranked highly. Many of the vocal however thought that these surveillance devices were acceptable. Later someone (porker) in the comment says that he is from the area and that his local government was mis-using this devices in question:
I live in the area in question. The red-light camera intersections were "doctored" in two ways: 1) The white line painted behind which you must stay while the light is red was moved back several feet ((in some instances more than the federal safety standards allow)) so that you have to take longer to get through the intersections, and 2) the yellow lights were changed to the minimum illumination times allowed by the State of Tennessee. This has the cumulative effect of "catching" more people. The moving of the "stay-behind" line is especially galling, as the cameras will take your picture if you are in front of the line. These things are a money grab, pure and simple, nothing else.
There are similar elements in the C.S. Lewis book "That Hideous Strength" which came out around 1945.
The earth's rotational speed is decreasing! We are all doomed! Why even think about DST at such grave moments!?!?
Are you also proud of being in the party of the deregulators then led us to this mess?
I wish I had mod points because this should not be moderated as Troll. It is all too true.
You missed one: "gets", not "get's". If you're going to be a grammar nazi, do it right.
I believe it is "hot grits." Get off our lawn.

Seems to me that he is allowed to be an asshole occassionally as long as he can share this kind of information.
There is a solution to the exclamation:
I took the easy route and just started using Ubuntu on my main machine. Problem solved.
How did your Karma just drop off a cliff? One second you are posting at 1, the next you are at -1.

I thought that Russians were good at math!
Mr. A.C. little guy, could we get a link to this online boat building video? Preferably the rental.

I thought I just made a reading error too: I believe the word you are looking for is denomination.
