I'd prefer a beowulf cluster of 20mb hds rather than a tb hd.
byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, terabyte, petabyte, exabyte...
anyone know what's next?
I wouldn't really like bloated software. I don't think anyone would; not even the creators of bloated software. What would be nice, though, is a hard drive with a 20gb partition for software installations (programs/games/OS - several partitions for multiple OSs) and the rest for storage or however one deems necessary. The only reason hard drives are useful is basically for storage of whatever data we find use for. I suppose this is offtopic, eh? Bah!
Not necessarily. Due to the small capacity we currently have, we home users haven't used PCs in manners that consume large storage space. Although, some may have made home videos of family and friends, but, the space is limited. With terabytes of space not only are we able to have more stored video content, but, possibly even larger and better quality. I'm sure once hard drives of that size are commnonplace, there will be many uses for consuming such space. Don't forget about games. Eventually the game of the year will be a 10gb install.
I recently decided to scour the P2P networks just to see how they work and I ended up downloading a few viruses rather than what the files actually claimed to be. Of course some people probably don't have virus protection, and sometimes that's not even enough. I always scan everything I download. I'm paranoid, but, it's worth it. I ended up scanning an 20kb exe file which seemed suspicious due to the MS-Dos default icon but was claimed to be a key generator for a program. It wasn't actually. Norton AntiVirus didn't detect any virus either, but, it infected my test computer. It self-replicated itself thousands of times and added entries to the registry in many places so as to self-replicate itself continuously and boot on start-up. I'm sure there's many other kinds of false programs and media available.
- I was using KaZaA and had the config to filter bogus files accordingly. It didn't seem to filter the supposed generator though.
Whenever you type in a query, we're actually looking for the communities after you type the query.
You mean you people actually manually produce the results for us to see? For free? So quickly?
Wow! Google charges for that service and it takes a day or two or longer for results.
How about a universal web browser? One that's based only on standards. Of course, though, it'd be great if all browsers displayed web pages as they should be. Just an idea.
I don't see how the prior post was offtopic. The "Linux addict" is CmdrTaco of course. I'd really like to send a message to whomever voted this post to be offtopic.
and I'm sure people are going to want to hold their phones 2ft in front of them so that the video capture is of their face while talking and who knows what else they're doing. I'm sure it wouldn't be too nice to see a picture of someone's ear while they're talking.
Free music... in the sense that it can be obtained for free, but also obtained for a cost. That's similar to the method of obtaining a Linux distro. You can download it for free or buy it from a retailer or company directly. Offer the audio in file format (mp3 or preferably ogg vorbis:] ) for free (or for a small fee if you insist - although, one purchase will account for many users obtaining the song) and also offer it on media as you currently do, without the little booklets of information about the band and their other various artistic art and mailing list information and other deals. There really isn't any way the RIAA will stop people from obtaining music for free. That doesn't mean, though, that everyone is going to go shoplift the music in cd/tape format from stores though, so, there may still be a profit if the people want the *extra benefit* of whatever else is included in the cd format (mentioned earlier, other ideas may be thought of).
I hope this idea is somewhat interested and understandable.
Nah, I think there'll be Nocks or Jerds by that time. The jocks won't be able to stay inside enduring such activities when they could be burning their skin out at the beach or showing off at a basketball match. The true nerds will be tinkering with developing the tools for the Nocks/Jerds.
It's sad that the initial message in this thread was considered off-topic, when, in fact, it corrected a mistake in the Slashdot story and provided users with the correct link. I'm about to cry.
Yep. You're an arroagant jerk. Currently, though, I enjoy playing all the games I have. All the games for Windows is one reason why it's still my primary O/S and that it's installed on all my computers (sadly). Until Wine is perfected, although (it's looking pretty good right now), I'll probably stick with Windows. Then, when it works perfectly I'll make the switch and learn as much as I can.

I bet Adam and Eve's inspiration was "Imagine a beowulf cluster of Humans." They then proceeded vigilantly.

Does this service only copy the audio from CDs or data also?
Bah... And I thought I was going to find out how to print some food. I'm starving.
What do you expect a Linux addict to say about Macs?
I predict it'll be commonplace before 2010.
Here's /.'s history /. around December 20, 1997.

How about a p2p blacklist filtering out known "bad" files?

I think he's asking if wirelss electricity exists yet. It'd be a breakthrough in technology if it did exist. I can't wait until it does.
But just like hybrid vehicles that use electricity and gas the phones can not only use the towers, but also the p2p technology.

You mean I can have a computer in my pen? Interesting...

You got my hopes up. :-( No big deal, though, as it's not really a big issue, until, someone has the nerve to do that with every consecutive thread.
