Well honestly, certs dumb. I'm not a fan about the way IT professionals are supposed demonstrate competence by their ability to memeorize things. Then again you gotta play the game and in the inerst of full disclosure, i'm about to get the CCNA done...
Phish had the following setup during their 21+ yrs:
1. Audience members were free to tape any show.
2. Audience members were allowed to copy/trade and recording that they made and freely share it by others so long as no profit was made in the exchange.
You can read their Policy if you want the nitty gritty...
It's a fantastic way to get people to listen to your music - they never had a top 20 hit but were one of the top grossing concert acts in the country for several years.
In their last few years they also started putting soundboard copies of the show on http://livephish.com/ and allowed downloads at $10/show (FLAC or MP3) - and all profits go to charity.
A wish more acts had this kind of insight to believe in their fans.
Your really making a semantical argument about the definition of the word "note"
Dictionary.com has it as:
1. A tone of definite pitch.
2. A symbol for such a tone, indicating pitch by its position on the staff and duration by its shape.
3. A key of an instrument, such as a piano.
I took it for #1. You can make a strech of an argument and call it number two. Another route you can take is to realize my original post was a joke and not worry too much about it.
For example, you have most likely solved tic-tac-toe: you know that the person who goes first always wins, when they play properly, no matter *what* the other person does.
Ummm....Tic Tac Toe is always a tie under optimal play.
LFS is not for a user like yourself that does not care about the minutia, its for users who want to have a good grasp of the underlying system. You'll be amazed on how much you'll learn about Linux by piecing it together yourself. The knowledge that you gain is incredibly helpful later on as a professional when your fixing some problem with very deep causes. I strongly reccomend that any professiaonal using Linux on a regular basis install LFS. You don't need to use it for a real system - i don't and wouldn't.
I'm not looking for complication, i'm looking for understanding.
I know this word is used way too loosely by people trying to make points about the law but aren't you forcing someone to break the law in order to sue them? Didnk't think you could do that.
L.L. Zamenhof's idea with Esperanto was not to replace native languages but to supplement them with an easy-to-use language that people would feel natural moving to. For example, word order is not important in Esperanto because object nouns have a disticnt prefix (-on) versus subject noungs (-o). However you make them all plural by adding a j (-ojn versus -oj) and its always regular so all nouns do this. All verbs are regular, etc.
Maybe in another way the article does make a good comparison b/c what google is trying to do is make everyone's language the universal language.
They're programs are just so damn spiffy some times.
This seems a little confusing/concerning. I think its well intentioned but if the code is licenseed as GPL how can it be under the restrictions that these claims only apply to the kernel. Suppose I want to go use kernel code in my own open source code and this code is covered by the patent, all of the sudden the GPL code is not GPL'able.
I really don't think this has alot of legal teeth - I think its more just them saying that in spirit, they're not going to sue us. Lets not foret that companies go down the dark path

they think that its hard to remember a alphanumeric password with upper/lower case, but the reality of the situation is that if you write it down, you'll use it for a few weeks but after a while just by rote repetition its in there and no longer an issue. When I get a new job, I create some weird ass password hide a sticky note for a few days around with the hint, and then when i've got it straight, to the shredder it goes...
Yea, i've read Hawking's book - I think this is a little more up to date since his book has been out a while as this has come out last year. Its been a long time since I've read it tho so YMMV.
I'm presently ingrossed in Brian Greene's new book called "The Fabric of the Cosmos" and does a wonderful job at creating lively understandable analogies while sticking to alot of interesting science. He covers the history and philospophy of how problems involving realtivity, time, and space have evolved - stronly reccomend it...

Oh, and back in the day they had an 'H' note - Bach used to use it to spell his name.
Well, a A# is an A# regardless of the octave. Maybe 13 if you count stevie wonder's key of life.

How many stupid ass flash ad's do you have to put up with that you can't kill except with a custom module for firefox? I yearn for Quit! :)
I'll support it!
