  1. Re:BSD on Overview of the BSDs · · Score: 5, Insightful

I think (the 1 paragraph answer), Linux is popular because of the "Tech Boom Era", where companies could get millions in funding for having a business plan written on a napkin. Linux embodied the "One Smart Guy Takes On The World", and "Everything Is Changing" ideals that drove the economy a few years back. To think that Linus, a single guy, with a rag-tag group of developers, with their sandals and freakishly stylish hair, could make an OS that would compete with the biggest and best offerings from Sun and IBM. Its a cultural thing. Linux had timing. BSD has been around much longer, and its much more mature than Linux. Linux has GREAT marketing, BSD has (basically) none.

Its not about the technology, but about the marketing, the timing, and the media's embrace.

It's amazing, we're nearly at 3GHz (there, if we consider OC'd chips).

Personally, I am running an Intel P3-1GHz/512mb/IDE. I am a power user. I play games, I edit video, I play all kinds of multimedia files, I run visual and development apps, compile normally, all with a bunch of "background apps". I work the hell out of my machines, and I DONT NEED anything faster! Sure, I'll upgrade in the near future, simply to keep up on the trends -- but I really dont need to. It's not the CPU power that I need. I need more RAM. I need more storage space -- and I need FASTER STORAGE.

What do I want? Serial ATA! DDR400 (if they can make it fast and reliable)! Disks that can sustain 133MB/s (150MB/s SerialATA). I want Gigabit ethernet! Thankfully, all of these are becoming standard on new systems -- which is excellent. Of course, Intel and AMD have nothing better todo, and want to win the marketing war, so let them keep making the fastest chips. Just dont expect them to sell like hotcakes as more users realize that the CPU doesent really matter much once you hit 1GHz, except for specialized apps.

George Carlin said it best, that we think in language. Changing the rhetoric that is used to describe the problem doesent change the problem. You can be Anti-Microsoft all you want, but that is worth NOTHING if the software that you choose to use exhibits the same problems, and you are not honest about them.

Again, I'm not taking Microsoft's side -- there aren't sides to take. Open Source software needs to be just as accountable as commercial software if it's to be taken seriously.

Selling WOULD be the best business decision, Napster is a dead name otherwise -- and this is a way to bring in some cash (to pay creditors, employees, whatever). Too bad the CEO's wont soil their names to prevent bankrupcy...

Id makes games, and for each game they make typically licenses the 3D engine for a secondary revenue stream. Id is NOT a publisher, they have Activision for that.

Id is a small company, and they are very focused on large, time consuming tasks. They make 1 game at a time. Why would they want to publish a bunch of smaller games from people that have no way to pay them outside of royalties? This is a job for their publisher possibly (Activision), but Id doing it themselves probably wouldent make any sense. It would spread their resources too thin and stray from doing the things that makes them 1) Happy 2) Rich. Sounds like a no-win to me.

The Quake3 engine is still very good technology, used in a lot of up-and-coming games. I dont think they can easily just drop the cost like that. I mean, how would you feel if you paid $250,000 for the Q3 engine last week, and now you can get it for $100? A bit angry?

This is something Activision may consider doing (if they can work it out with Id). For minimal investment on their part, it makes a lot of sense so long as they have the capabilities to manage it.
