There is also the fact that microsoft loves to put stuff in their Eula. I can also imagine anyone producing a reader for the "encrypted XML" running afoul of the DCMA.
"Doesn't sound like XML to me?!"
Sure it is! It's XML with Microsoft Security Extensions!
But it's also against the law to disagree about abortion or be a Scientologist. How does that lead to Neo-Nazi's?
Don't drag me into any debate about abortion please! My views are not going to be stated here. Scientology I believe is a con - game / cult, but I'm not calling for the arrest of John Travolta.
No they buy PC's. That is why apple's userbase has been getting smaller every year. At onetime they had 10 - 15% of the total desktop & corporate users. Now it's something like 3.5%.
There's nothing that irks me more than working on a different computer at the office, and some wiseacre has removed the menus from MSIE.
Their are some people who are a little protective of their computer issued to them. They do things like that to keep people from using it. I had a co-worker that made all the colors an ugly purple and put a picture of vomit on the screen. She made that in the guest user account in NT. The nightshift janitor stopped using her cubicle at night. He didn't go to mine either I use linux! To be honest, the ability to tweak your interface to your preferences should be a god given right. If I buy the overpriced underpowered harware that Apple is selling with OS X, then it's mine to use and Steve Jobs can stick it where the sun don't shine. The world will not end tomorrow If I decide that aqua should be cherry red instead of blue and menus should only open with double clicks. I can just as easily run linux on apple hardware but while I'm at it I'd sooner get a Dell. You get more bang for the buck. The morons at Apple should know their roll and realize that after they sell it, it's no longer theirs. Any effort to reassert their control is just going to piss people off.
Did that comment make you feel better? Does your fragile low self esteem need to be propped up by making comments that intended to make others sink to your level? You were picked on school weren't you, go ahead admit it. Try talking with Jon Katz awhile he might be able to sooth your mental anguish. Or then again you just might be a child pretending be older.
I agree! It probably is optimised for a Gforce 3 or better, some people have reported the same problems with GForce 2 cards. That is probable why they specifically state GForce on the box. My card is an NVIDIA TNT2 which is much older, it's a slide show in windows too! I think the only reason it runs in linux is the use of mapping to OpenGL instead of true Direct X. Direct X might be a better API for developers but for the hardware, it really sucks wind.
I think Xbill is a perfect example of the genre. I like to play it just after having to troubleshoot a windows 2000 machine. I have 35 linux machines and 4 windows 2000 machines on our network. 80% of my administration chores go to support those 4 machines. I'm not a full time admin, I'm a developer at this rate if we ditch the Win2k and go 100% linux, I could still support up to 100 machines part time. Xbill is my game!!!!!
An 850Mhz Athlon with 512MB of RAM. I have run it both full screen and in an 800x600 window. It's better for me in a window but quite playable in both. Did you check your color depth? I'm using 16 bit, at 24 bit or better I get the results your getting. Also ensure that your running full hardware acceleration. Run glxgears in a terminal window and if it reports 500 fps or better, you should not have a problem.
How much did you pay for that game? You can get an old TNT2 , 32 Meg card for less than $50. I paid twenty dollars for mine. The Matrox G400 can only be used with open source drivers. The reason you need NVIDIA is they have released drivers for linux. Even a GForce 4 won't play Heavy Gear, Quake III or many of the other loki titles without the commercial drivers. Make it known to other companies that you will only use NVIDIA hardware until the situation changes. I'm eventually going to buy a GForce card but haven't had a reason since all the games I currently play work great. I can run run Grand Theft Auto 3 in linux under winex, but it is unplayable under windows. The game lists a GForce card as the minimum. But that's really only true in direct x 8 on windows.
That's the beauty of winex, in some cases it actually runs better in linux. I have a TNT2 32 Meg card, GTA3 is unuseable in windows it requires a GForce and says so on the box. But it is quite playable in linux under winex. I believe it has to do with the fact that OpenGL rendering (NVIDIA Version) is more efficient than Direct X 8. The only problem I have is if I run the stupid videos at the beginning of the game, it will lock up the computer in the middle of it. But if I hit the space bar and bypass the intros, no problems. You do have to have an nvidia card though. Without hardware acceleration with the commercial drivers you can't run much of anything at all.
You can play spider solitare through the free version of codeweavers wine. Copy the spider directory in windows to your home directory and create a link "wine $HOME/spider/spider.exe" and you can play it quite nicely. I have a nice link to on my kde panel. Finding a good spider icon was the hardest part. It is quite fast, though I have an 850Mhz Athlon so results may vary. I've used it to play around with pinball & freecell (gnome freecell is much better!). I also use it for the windows version of AIM, my kids use all of the features and have to have that version. Me, I use gaim!
1) OS Support - any desktop support specialist (Read low pay minimal skils) can talk you through an install over the phone.
99.9% of purchasers won't be installing it anyway. What is freedos one floppy?
2) App Support - no applications to support
3) Alternative OS Support - an OS like linux would require support specialist trained in linux.
4) Quite a number of purchasers wil use MS Windows Disk they already own.
For your information it was for everyone! It was the implementations that got off track. "that all men are endowed by their creator" Only women were not included in that definition and oversites like that is why they allowed for amendmants. The constitution was never meant to strike the word "god" or stop someone from publically declaring their religion either. It only said there would be no state religion and all religions would be allowed. That didn't get implemented correctly either, a supreme court justice who was a member of the kkk decided at the turn of the 20th century that "atheism" would be the state religion. We aren't supposed to look at race for hiring but white men get systematically shafted by our own federal government. Our government has been hijaked by liberal judges with absolute job security with no common sense and politicians on the take from special interests groups.
The fact that linux generates $80 Million is actually quite impressive for a free download! No it's not Microsoft or Sun, but is that really the point? Did we really want to trade Microsoft for RedHat? The real need has always been a stable operating system that was free of Microsofts gorilla tactics and extravagant licensing fees. That people could make a little money on, not to be richest company the world. With linux everyone has the same potential, now developers it's time to start creating useful software that you can make money with. With that killer app that no one can do without will bring new users. With the quickbooks, turbo tax, tivoli, oracle etc. will come increased revenue. It's only a matter of perserverence and time! That $80 million doesn't take in to account the increase in hardware revenues for companies like IBM. Besides, I'd love to be making $80 a year, wouldn't you?
Alot depends on your machine. Windows 2000 is incredibly stable on decent hardware. But try upgrading an older system that previously ran Win9x. Your results may vary considerably. I believe that microsoft's days are numbered. Has anybody ever completly held on to a large lucrative monopoly for an extended period of time? IBM, AT&T,Ford, Xerox,Railroad companies etc. have all held absolute monopolies at one time and lost them. The companies didn't disappear, but they lost their unfair advantage. Linux isn't going to kill Microsoft, but given time, it will continue to gnaw away at their market share. Time is on our side. Remove the operating system monopoly and they then have to compete fairly like everyone else. Nobody is buying their software is a service licensing scheme. I think the ability to run windows apps through wine is a big thing for developers. They don't have to reinvent their software, as long as they work with wine to ensure compatibility they can increase their market share without having to invest heavily with little return.
The reason it sounds dumb, is they don't use T1 or T3's they use OC-192's which is alot higher. But if every user uses the max bandwidth all the time they cannot supply possibly it. Also OC-192 connections are extremely expensive. But obviously cheaper than hundreds of T1's. Most network traffic is bursts, a download here, a quick webpage there. But if everyone were sharing massive files and / or streaming video the providor would very quickly go broke. There is also administrative, maintenance and hardware/cable infrastructure costs on top of that.

Not supporting my (home) wheel mouse. Telling users they need new drivers is not an option!
How many times have people had to go to a hardware company's support site to get the latest drivers for their hardware? Or even the latest version of ActiveX to support the new game they want to install? In windows this has been a fact of life for years and this is not a mozilla only problem. At least you have an option of getting a new driver, most hardware companies are completely oblivious to anything but windows.
I've been using mozilla for almost 2 years. I've never had a problem with the wheel mouse. I've installed it on both linux & windows machines. And I've used several brands of wheel mice including the genius net mouse which is'nt even a wheel but a toggle switch really. And they all worked perfectly. You need to give alot more information.

It's only funny if it gets thrown out of court, like it should. If they win or google settles, that would not be funny at all!
