these are far from fundamental economic principles. check out this research by david levine and michele boldrin---two well respected economists. the first four chapters of their new book are online. a quote from the website:
Innovative firms naturally gain monopoly power for some period of time, and it is argued without the prospect of monopoly power in the form of "intellectual property" would have insufficient incentive to innovate. In fact intellectual monopoly is costly, dangerous, and neither needed for, nor a necessary consequence of, innovation.
sometime in the 90s the DOD stopped giving hard copies of the rainbow books out to the public. i waited a few years after they stopped and sold mine on ebay for around 500.
i couldn't disagree more. i literally had chills running down my spine watching it. i can't imagine how exciting it must have been for the audience members.

sounds similar to a frequently used pedantic game in game theory called the beer-quiche game. basic idea is that a wimp can send a signal of being tough by drinking beer rather than eating quiche (which he prefers) in order to avoid getting beaten up.
The Baroque cycle is for freaks whith good wrist, to support the huge weight of its massive volumes.
this may sound weird, but i think the roughcut hardcover edition of the baroque cycle books are physically the nicest books i've ever held. everything from the paper texture and weight to how easily the books sit flat on a table while open.
i didn't enjoy "quicksilver" for the same reason, but i did finish it and went on to read "the confusion". the second volume is much, much more exciting than the first. in my opinion, the reward contained in "the confusion" is more than worth suffering through "quicksilver". hopefully "the system of the world" will continue on "the confusion's" success.
inserting the signature into the exe will change the signature of the file, so don't you need to know the (exe + embedded sig)'s signature before embedding anything? how?
I'd really like to see BOINC implement some economic principals in their code. By acting as a gateway to multiple distributed projects, they have the perfect framework to implement the concept of comparative advantage in distributed computing. By efficiently allocating projects to users while still allowing users to choose which projects make progress, more work will get done in less time.
this is the first i've seen BOINC. it looks like a good platform to implement concepts of comparative advantage in distributed computing projects . the idea is to apply some of the concepts that drive international trade to distributed computing.
You do realize that selling your long shares and buying them back when you would have covered your short shares would be the same trade? And depending how long you've had your long shares, it could have been a huge tax saving to sell the longs.
as you said in your post, vt wanted the publicity. is there evidence that apple won't honor requests from companies not wanting publicity? i doubt that apple is giong to turn down cash just because they can't turn a large order into a marketing opportunity.
Windows users can download 0.6 with a Windows installer. This will add registery keys for you, making plugin installations much, much easier. It's unofficial, but very convenient.

Quoted from Loop Rumors:
We received word that two large shipments of Power PC 970 processors went to Foxconn in Taiwan, under a purchase order from Apple computer. Twenty thousand 1.4Ghz PPC 970's and forty thousand 1.6Ghz PPC 970's have already arrived in their hands. IBM's inventory contains fifty thousand 1.8 Ghz PPC 970's, of which forty thousand are destined for Foxconn tomorrow (Wednesday).
IBM has listed as pending 2Ghz parts as well, which means that it will be in inventory within a month if their fab in East Fishkill produces sufficient volumes of them, and from what we hear they should be in stock by mid-June. Apple has stated that they need a minimum of 40 thousand in order to make a production run, and from what we understand this is for dual processors because normally their production runs are twenty thousand units. It is not IBM's policy to comment on other vendor's unreleased products. We have also been briefed that the PPC 970 will come in 2.3 and 2.5Ghz configurations by the end of the year, and as well some preliminary specs on the upcoming 980 processor, which is a Power 5 derivative.
Hopefully 1.8Ghz won't be the high end of the first run after all.
Agreed. I'm holding Hannibal responsible for lowering my marks on an econometrics test I have this evening. I've been impatiently waiting to read this article for a lonnnng time.

and the result is a special edition with poorly done cgi scenes that look extremely out of place in a movie full of "old school" technology.
