That's the kind of thing I think we are going to see more of sooner rather than later. I think AI developement is going to have an intermediate level where the systems aren't quite intelligent but are very good at figuring out what you want. Sort of a super-google. OTOH, I am probably completely wrong because I am talking of things I know very little about.

Maybe the wifi technology is evolving in a cathadral and bazaar manner, but the services can't follow same pattern.

makes any sense. Is it evoling in a Catherdral manner? Or a Bazaar manner? Or both, which I suppose is possible (as is the case with software) but I don't really think that was the idea you meant to convey.

Maybe I should've mentioned that I was replying specefically to this statement. The laptop is a IBM Thinkpad T30. And I also run Debian on it, if that matters.

I didn't mean to be all antagonistic about it, was just mentioning a case where it works. I will also mention that attempting to suspend or hibernate the laptop in Linux wreaks all sorts of havoc. That has been a big PITA actually, as I am in Linux more than windows. (They make us use VS.NET in class, they also make us "rent" these laptops from them.) I tried 2.5.64 for a period, suspension still didn't work properly, even with ACPI support compiled in the kernel. Ah well. Hope this helps.

I like my window manager seperate thank you very much. The fact that I can select which wm to use at any given moment is very appealing. I'd have a seizure if I had to install multiple versions of X to be able to switch between WMs or if X had to have every WM rolled into it. Plus there are many occasions where i don't run a WM at all, playing movies, games, etc. Who needs a WM for a fragfest or a fullscreen DVD?

Well, on my laptop, in XP (yes, there I said it! XP! XP! XP! Ya gotta a problem with that?) pressing the power button will give you a graceful shutdown. Which I assume means its possible for PCs too. I guess the code just needs to be written for Linux.
