tis neither a jargon nor a math issue, it is a "how flipp'n important is this to me" issue. Where one will weigh the benefit one receives form wasting ones time to learn new things. For example, will the 30 seconds it takes for me to learn what a gigabyte, vs kilobyte is be more beneficial to me, or will i better spend those 30 secs. looking at boobies on one of those them thar Interwebs. Me thinks you know the answer. now repeat that but this time replace gigabyte with gigadollars and kilobyte with kilodollars and see if boobie watching wins out again. So it comes down to what people feel is most important for them to know. Much like the guy the posted about people driving cars without knowing what innards do, people do not need to know what the innards do as it is not required for them to perform the action they want to do. But just as not know the innards of your car may leave you with higher repair bills for less scrupulous repair shops, not knowing computer terms will have adverse consequences as well. So the trick is to convince people that learning computer terms is vitally important to them, much more so than looking at boobies. But this is just my opinion, i could be wrong.
wrote a short story about this, i called it brain dumping. in my story the entire poluation was dumped into computers, and several 1000 years later aliens visited earth, and when they found no one living the build the now delapidated citys and such, they felt teh race was killed off and so when they left, they "turned out the lights" and inadvertantly wiped out the human race.
My credit is so poor that stealing my identiy is only going to hurt them. I mean they think they are gettign a free ride, but when Rocko breaks down their door looking for past due payments boy will they be in for a suprise, hell this might be the best thing to ever happen to me!
These devices make no real sense to me whatsoever.
No i until i realized that in mass population centers mass trasit is teh way to got and for peopel to find afforable living they must live 1 to 2 hours of mass transit time away from their respective jobs, so if i was sitting ona seat waiting to get to work i could catch up on the tv shows i missed from the previous day (mainly becasue i cannot watch these shows as they are on as i am on the mass transit ride home)downloaded form my media center (insert favorite setup here tivo, replay, mythtv, etc) on to one of these devices. So there is one reason to get one, it's a rather specific situation, but one that is shared by millions and that's all it take to turn the profits needed to green light production.
My issue is being the pig that i am is i'd probably fill these things up with more pr0n than god ever intended there to be on one. So i would need a way to watch these shows without the possiblity of underage kids looking over my shoulder, for while i am a pig, i am socialy conscience one, and those heads up displays aren't cheap.
that not every one is an asshat(this assumption is based on persaonal experience...it of course may be wrong and during my exstenive travels across this world i may have been butt of a cruel joke by the gods of entropy and only allowed to have experiences the majority of which were of non asshats, but i digress). And that in the OS community that the non asshats outnumber the asshats (again this is based on personal experience). So i trust that if an OS community developed software were to have nontrustworthy coding, the non asshat computer geeks out there will find it and let the rest of the world know. I also trust in everyone's low tolerance level for asshatiness (Dr. Bernstein would be proud or that unfamiliar nosie, but again i digress). Once one encounters an asshat then all are made to be aware of the hasshat, such as "Troll" modifiers here at slashdot (that this post will undoubtedly get because moderators are such humorless as... again i digress;) adn various other means, and the asshat is then advoided like the plauge. For example, how many people fall for the goat sex link anymore? So the point is, we are all humans, and for the majority we are all decent people. Yes there will always be the mentally unbalanced and the just down and out asshats, but they are the exception not the rule, and just because the exception gets the attention the mass information conduits we need to remind outselves that the information that splatters our news and media outlets are usually of these exceptions of the world, not the norm because they are not the norm. If we could learn to be content with hearing about the boring happenings then maybe we would have a better understanding of the world. Such as: Bob woke up, went to work, came home, cooked dinner, played Halo2, and went to sleep today, film at 11:00. Instead of Bill the homicidal maniac took an ax to his car and went running around town putting babies on spikes while his wife was left at home to count matches. When we becoem bombarded with stories of Bill instead of Bob we start to believe that all peopel are like Bill, when in reality there are millions of people like Bob to every person like Bill. But don't take my word for it, for that's who all this crap started in the first place, go find out for yourself. (but just in case the gods of entropy have a filed day with you bring a can a mace;)
Most business customers are not developers. They are no more able to benefit from open source than the average person would benefit from a set of engineering blueprints of their dishwasher. Open source only speaks to developers. To everyone else it is gibberish.
good point. the blue prints have no advantage to me. . . UNLESS you take into consideration that while i do not need (nor can i read) the blue prints, but joe, the down the street who happens to be an aspiring dishwasher manufacturer, and would make a great manufacturer if he only had the money to sink into R&D, would benifit greatly by haveing free access to blueprints.
of course this is all just my opinion, i could be, and often am, wrong.
welllll.... lets see, Microsoft, rather famous for it overpriced crap, and SBC, also famous for overpriced crap, and not to mention their customer service which has atitutde that makes Napolean Dynomite look like the crown prince of whales {btw has anyone see older pictures a George W Bush and think 'damn all he needs is the glasses and moon boots.'} So from this combination of two great evils shall spring forth a monster of a telecomunication/entertainment the likes of which the world has never imagened. I mean even Chuthulu will say "Damn!". This venture can only lead to more sheep, and continued dumbing down of america and the world. Subdigation will no longer be a option, but a requirement, and you best bring your own jar o' vassaline when call the help desk cuz this time not only do they not care what you have to say, they won't have to watch what they say to you for the shall be the the almighty-mega-conclomerate-super-ultra-panultimate -super-power-grand-poo-bah of the communication and entertainment industry, and it is you who will bow to them if you want your "aqua teen hunger force" or your "simpsons" or your "south park" or your "fill in the subversive cartoon here" {i woudl say realtiy show but those that watch thsoe have already lost any right to free will in my book and need to have red dots painted on their heads so when the mental unstable snap and climb tall towers with high powered rifles they can be the first to go...but i digress} so um, yeah that's all i got to say about that, except this all just my opinion, i could be wrong.
i am by no means a expert in any of this, but i would like to know what is total picture. From the energy that is used and the waste that is produced form the manufacturing, use, and disposal of these batteries VS. the energy used, wasted produced, etc etc of a hydrogen system similar to the one mention in the article. And then see how the 2 systems stack up in areas of power, longevity, environmental impact, and of course the big one: how much $$$ woudl have to come out of my pocket to setup each system and then how much in use over the lifetime of the vehicle (going to work, kid's scoccer practices, vacations, etc). Please don't tell me one is better than the other without data to back up your claims, otherwise you come off as uninformed, overopinionated ninny, but then agian that's just my opinion, i could be wrong;)
size of universe:infinite (i mean you might think it's a long way to the chemist, but that's just peanuts compared to how big the universe is.
number of planets in universe: again infinite.
number of planets with life on them: not infinite
infinity/not infinity=just about zero, so yes we are alone.
if you can get away form win2k, never been good for gaming as far as my experiences have gone, also get the latest drivers, and stop running the games a the super large resolutions, and lower or turn off some of the details. if that doesn't help try your video card in another machine and if that runs fine then look into a new motherboard.
as this is post is well into the 100's of posts i doubt it will be read but becasue i'm pig headed here goes anyway: Several months ago (not sure when) Real said that they where going to change their ways, and adopt a google-ish point of view: 'try to do no evil.' To this they have helped out the helix project, released real 10 codecs, and re-tooled their webpage to make finding and downloading their free player eaiser (guys you still need to work on that one). And now they are tryign to make thier format play on every player out there. This is the wisest move possible for a company trying to make money. This way they do not need to dump money into hardware design and manufacturing, for their own portable player. Also if you had a format that could be played on all portable players and therefor be easily "traded" between these players (as players will eventually get wifi or bluetooth or whatever soon to allow for song trading with the need of a desktop or laptop). This will help to insure that your format is the one choosen by the public. For i would not trade a song with some who used songs i could not play on my device. So they are beign very smart, and at teh same time giveing us choices but not shoving siad choice down our throats. i say bravo to them, but thi does not make up for the evils of your past Real, and the question remains can a leapard really change it's spots?
it seems to me that if someone created an evil virus posing as a white virus the open source community would be albe to find that out rather quickly adn let the world know about it and how to deal with it. So this would mean that virus writters would need to create virii that act very quickly which woudl also make them easier to spot, or create sleepers which increase the ability for them to be found before they do any damage. So it seems to me that once something does what is is not supposed to do, there are 1000s of ubergeeks ready to investigate and deal with it. Now granted it is up to the user to properly research what they install into their computers, but how is that different than now?

please explain 'gapless' to us newbs
because it allows people to be cut off from using the tap
This is an Evil machine that needs to be killed and never spoken of again.

in my opinion, i think the word "yet" should have been the last word in the above slashdot writeup.
"They bought there tickets, they knew what they were getting into! I say, let 'em crash!"
or something like that.
why did people buy vhs instead of betamax?
except spyware that resides in the MBR ;)
sorry couldn't resist

not sure about IIS, but slashdot has been running a lot slower than normal for me too. Again sorry for the off topic post.
