What's to stop them from cloning Elvis? It has to stop somewhere. Although the idea of cloning Jesus Christ does sound pretty cool. But I think God would be pissed and just end the world right there and then.
If you don't like the ads on tv, in magazines, on billboards, and calling you on the phone, well, find a quiet room and read a book. I don't even have cable TV. I own a TV for sole purpose of watching DVD movies. So there.
Apparently they are going to start charging for search results on their p2p network. Here is a quote from the article about what they are rolling out. "These technologies include TopSearch, a sponsored link engine that enables content owners to promote their content and receive preferred placement in P2P search results". Sound familiar? Sounds to me like RealNames and we all know how successful that was.
I was watching the national news this morning, and they had a story of that girl who was killed by the stranger she met in a chat room. They keep making a big deal of how kids are so much in danger of strangers online but consider this: Based on the number of kids who chat online(millions) and the number of kids who have actually been molested/killed by dirty old men they chatted with(what, like 5?), it is safe to say that any given family has a better chance of winning the lottery than they do of having their child abducted by an internet predator. So our retarded-ass govt wants to pass more laws because the media scared the shit out of them. Aren't the lawmakers suppossed to know better?
I would love to have one of my submissions actually make it to the front page. So why does this guy get his book review posted, when he didn't even read the book. Let's establish some kind of standards here. Rules: 1. Book Reviews: You must actually read the book. 2. Movie Reviews: You must see the movie. etc.
I stopped watching the x-files two years ago but I did watch the last episode tonight, because I was a huge fan. Apparently I didn't miss anything the last two years. Cool.
I think it matters becuase a ton of slashdotters use IE, whether they admit it or not. And for those folks who do use it, they might not have the auto-update turned on, and therefore might not know about the update any other way. Of course they all should be using Opera. ..

SO what have these 70 employees been doing all this time? They have one software product, which if I am correct was coded completely by Fanning himself. I never understood how they made any money. They had one product which was downloaded free, and never had any ads. What kind of a business model is that? Fanning is laughing all the way to the bank, becuase some idiots invested $13 million. Maybe he'll be be like the other big MP3 pioneer who got shut down, and create a new Linux release for Windows users. Look out!
They claim that they are losing money due to file sharing but can't prove it. In fact, the opposite can be proven (like with that band Wilco, sorry I don't have a link to that article.) So Kazaa proposes more file sharing, plus generating $2 billion(the RIAA will likely get some cut of it, although it will apparently go mostly to artists). They get much increased record sales and a cut of the $1 billion. Where does Hillary see a problem? I'd have no problem paying $1, or even $10 per month if I knew Kazaa's music base would remain consistent and accessible.
I found this article which briefly describes some of the reasoning behind the.pro restrictions. I guess the $300 is to cover the research that goes into verifying that someone is really a pro. They will also be verifying whether the company owns a trademark to cut down on cybersquatting. Here is a great quote for all you lawyer fans:
"Elana Broitman, a lawyer representing RegistryPro, told the room full of fellow attorneys that such restrictions will naturally hinder abuse because those professions (referring to lawyers) have a higher level of ethics than other groups and "would be less likely to cybersquat." "
Agree. I downloaded most of the Ill Nino album, then I liked it so much, I went out and bought it. Typically I listen to underground metal/emo/hardcore music that never makes it to radio or MTV, so I find new bands by using kazaa, but I still buy CDs as much as I ever did. The problem is that radio and MTV are flooded with shitty acts right now, so lots and lots of people have turned to file sharing to discover new music.
I notice that slashdot never misses the opportunity to post articles regarding deep linking. If deep linking became illegal, slashdot would suck, or just not exist. All the news items posted here are deep linked. When was the last time you saw a post that linked to wired.com, but not the article. It's like, "hey, there is a great article on open source something-or-other at osdn.com but we suggest that you just go to their homepage and look at the banner ads, oh, and by the way, good luck finding the article."
A lot of folks seem to be mentioning the problems with the lucent winmodems not working with Linux. I worked tech support for an ISP(one of the 5 largest)and we couldn't get those damn Lucent modems to work with Windows, let alone anything else. Consider this: the kind of people buying these naked PCs are a little more advanced users anyway, so I think most of them will be using broadband(with the built in ethernet). Those people will just be happy that the modem is not built in, so they can throw it away and free up a slot on the mobo. That's what I would do.
At Wal-Marts website at the bottom of the page that features the Windows-less machines is the following note with respective links: See all computers without operating systems.
Also, check out our selection of Linux books.
Yes folks, they are PROMOTING Linux for these machines. So it might be possible that they could bundle a distro with the pc in the future.
I used to work for a MAJOR web hosting provider who built their own boxes. They employed a full time hardare guy to put them together. The owner of the company was a real cheapskate so he cut corners whenever he could. To save money they used FreeBSD and Apache, and they built their servers from generic desktop towers, just like the one your mom uses. They made a ton of money though. With a full time hardware guy and enough UNIX gurus, they had no problem keeping systems up and running.
AMC Pleasure Island 24 Lake Buena Vista, Florida (which is at Walt Disney World in Orlando) . . . and I didn't think anything good could ever come from living near Walt Disney World. With the student discount the evening admission is only $5!
Artists will always invest in the creation of music to achieve the artistic goals of personal expression as well as the entertainment of others. Distributing the music only becomes the crime of piracy when folks like Rosen don't get their cut of the profits. Boo hoo.
Now everybody, let's all take 10 seconds to make sure our firewall and AV software is up-to-date. Okay. Good. Whooo! That was a close one. (As I wipe the sweat off my brow). Now we can all go back to not giving a shit what the Chinese are up to.

If every Slashdot reader wrote him in on the ballot, he would end up with more votes than Ross Perot.

Circuit City has always had that same policy(to refund the difference after a price drop). You might have seen the commercials.

I switched to Godaddy.com a while back, and everything went perfectly and super fast.
