Wish I could mod this up. Absolutely right - especially when unions get involved. Or abusive spouses. Or that pastor who drives you to the polls. Just too many ways this can be abused.
Having said that, it does make it difficult to audit the system - how can you be sure that the machine isn't switching your vote after you leave? Ideally, people would be able to go back some other time and confirm that the vote they cast was in the system correctly. I think the only way to do this would be to allow you to go to a secure facility where you could confirm, in private, how you voted and insure that at least your vote was correctly accepted
"However, since he's NOT for the middle class and decidedly against the poor, and is actually the candidate for the 1%, I would be a damned fool to vote for him. Of course, if you are teh 1% you'd be a damned fool to vote against hime (unless you love your country, but I doubt there's a single patriot in the 1%)."
And you base this off of....... what? Has he ever said this? No. Just because he disagrees with your methods for fixing a problem doesn't mean that he disagrees with your desire to solve the problem. Please quite the hyperbole.
So, instead you have to spend $500 for a cheap PC to build windows apps on? Windows doesn't offer Visual Studio on the Mac just like Apple doesn't offer XCode on Windows. XCode is a free download btw.
Having said that, I've programmed on both environments and this is what I've found:
1. Programming for C# has been a joy. It's easy to go from C,C++ or Java and pick up on what's different. The additional features make sense and are simple to use and well documented. Programming for ObjC has been really ugly- the language is combination of 2 languages in the same way that two cars hitting each other become one - the result is just an ugly mess.
2. Visual Studio Express may be free, but it does have some missing features. For instance, in much older versions of VS you could load in a binary file and look at the bytes in hex. Not true in this latest version. I'm not sure about the $1000 version though.
3. XCode is about as buggy as iTunes. They release version frequently and you can expect the bug that are frustrating you to go away, but you can be sure that newer more annoying ones will appear. One version I downloaded would show you incorrect values in the debugger. Pretty sad.
4. XCode was written for 2 groups of people - 1- those who know nothing about programming, and 2- those who are developers. This means that there are 2 ways of doing everything. These 2 methods are incompatible with each other and the gui is clumsy and confusing.
5. Apple apps crash. I've used a LOT of apps and almost every one of them has crashed at some point. Even the "Settings" program that's part of the phone! This seems to indicate to me that either 1- The IOS environment is flawed, or 2- The programming environment is exceedingly difficult to write to without creating issues that cause it to crash.
In conclusion, in my experience C# has a better environment to program to, and you can now use Mono to run apps on Linux (Free) and Mono-Touch (though very expensive) to port apps to iphone. I makes me almost want to buy a Windows mobile device..... almost, but not quite.
"name one benefit ever received by consumers which went away with the introduction of FCC net neutrality rules"
Ok, with net neutrality companies can't offer free/cheap browsing with limitations. Based on what I've read of the law, I would think the following would be verboten - although I'm not a lawyer, so some of these might be allowed.
1. A church can't offer free wifi at church, but block porn sites which you shouldn't be viewing while in church
2. Companies can't offer tiered access plans. 1 Mb for $20/month, 10 Mb for $30/month, etc, etc
3. A company can't offer network access that only allows you access to their sites, such as Apple allowing access to the genius scheduling area of their website. Instead, people in all the local stores could piggy-back on Apple's wifi for their internet access rather than paying for it themselves.
There are ways of preventing AT&T/Comcast, etc from censoring the internet- they're called competitors. I understand where the net-neutrality rules come from- I really hate the idea that a service provider would this to me. Instead, I offer a competing proposal- information. If you required ISPs to declare what filtering they are doing so that people would know what's going on, then they can put pressure back on those companies or find alternative companies.
You're assuming that it's "back luck for them". They took the claims that came from shady sources, and they put them to the test, paying from their own pockets to find out the truth. Sounds like they were engaging in good rational thinking - kudos to them. Now, let me ask you - if the report had shown that there was no global warming, would you have been as open-minded?
"Without any doubt. FAR more study would have to be done, over a LONG period of time, before any direct messing with the ecology should be attempted"
But, they have computer models! And these models are based on their observations. That's the same standard used to 'prove' global warming, so it should be good enough.
Are you a clever troll, or a freaking moron? In case your not a troll,
Ok, everyone in the world-> You must wear really expensive heavy equipment to prevent you from breathing out CO2. If not, we will kill you! Also, all your animals, including horses and camels will also need this equipment or we will kill them! Also, the cost of everything (especially food) is about to skyrocket astronomically because we don't allow for our commercial farming equipment, transportation, etc. But don't worry, in a few decades we'll have electric versions of those. Then you can start eating again.
BTW, who's going to perform these mass killings? Are you going to send your children all over the world to commit genecide? Do you think the locals will just lay down and let themselves be slaughtered?
Last time I tuned on my Xbox I was accosted with advertisements. I really don't like having to scroll past piles of spam to get to what I want to do! I want to watch a video- I don't give a damn about the next Halo that came out.
I have to disagree. I'd really be interested in seeing their Singularity project turned into a product. It's an OS in CLR which doesn't need/use virtual memory. If the CLR is truely secure then it would be pretty resistant to viruses. Context switching is very quick when you don't need to load in different virt/phys tables. Problem is- no drivers for it yet, but for a tablet that isn't an issue.
"MS could find itself as the only vendor selling ARM-based W8 tablets". Funny enough, their families will be the only ones buying them.
I watched the Surface announcement - just plain sad "We're releasing a tablet...... sometime.... for some amount of money.... with some specs to be sure.... we don't really know when or for how much or what the specs are. Perhaps we'll have an announcement. Opps, my prototype crashed. Well, I'm sure you'll buy it because Microsoft has cool image and a strong reputation for stable products, right?"
I was hired at my current position 5 weeks ago. Since then I've interviewed 15 people. I gave the first 8 a programming test that I know isn't too hard because 8 weeks ago I was able to answer it without breaking a sweat. Even with major hints they were unable to get it and one PHD couldn't even understand the answer when I wrote it out for her! I went to a simpler programming test for the next 7 and none were able to get that one either. During the last 2 I asked them "Write a function that takes the head of a linked list of integers and sums their values" and they couldn't even define the structure. All I could think of is "If this is my competition, why did it take me over a month to find employment?!"
"Keep counting the vote until our guy wins - then the counting is over". Does it mean anything that the votes had been counted several times with the same results? Are you sure that the accuracy is getting better each time? After people are holding and playing with the chads each time? People who use criteria such as "When I consider a ballet I try to think about how this person really wanted to vote" - are they psychic?

Broderbund. Just saying their name invokes memories of "the good ol' days" - the Ancient Art of War, Print Shop Pro, Prince of Persia, Lode Runner, Carmen SanDiego. Wow, that was really a great company..... so was Bullfrog. Ah nostalgia
And that 70+ years keeps being extended. With the fears that Micky Mouse would enter the public domain, Disney has been very successful in lobbying congress to extending copyright lengths, and is likely to do so for the foreseeable future.
With Apple products there was a Halo effect- people who liked ipods and iphones. But Microsoft has been creating OS's for many years and is now seeing what we really think of their products.
Why don't I consider getting an Windows phone? Ask me why I have numerous disks, files, folders and variables over the years that I've named MS_SUCKS or FIX_MS_CRAP, etc, etc. Think about the amount of time people spend trying to defend and repair their systems from viruses and malware that exists because of a flawed overall security strategy. Add to that their philosophy of designing to the least common denominator - I expect that a Windows phone will come with a Reana or CeLow ring tone, but without a free built in wifi extendor
Problem is that there isn't much money in it, so the private section won't do much. Bransen is at least trying, but unless we start seeing space tourists I think we've already reached our limit.
I'm not sure that it was co-opted by the republicans as much as shunned by the Democrats. I kept waiting for a candidate to come out as a Tea Party Democrat (in a Red State). It would have taken some courage, but they would have automatically been given the power to define a portion of a large, growing movement. Instead, democrats realized that the media was on course to destroy the Tea Party and decided to step back and watch it occur.
A similar case could be made about a Republican candidate who puts support behind OWS. In places where OWS was big it could have provided a challege to the 1 party system.
Today I can go to the store and buy the Nvidia board that they mention. When can I buy a system with a Knight's Corner chip? What about a PCI-E board? The answer is never. It will only be sold to Intel's partners in labs and research environments for special projects. It means very little to most of us.
As an economic conservative, the problem that I have with net neutrality is that it puts in place artificial barriers that stifle innovation and prevent new products from appearing. For instance, what if a flower company is willing to subsidize internet access but all web searches related to flowers would forward to their site? I might or might not be willing tolerate that depending on how much they are paying.
Also, I have to plead ignorance on this matter, but would this prevent me from offering a internet service that give priority to VOIP? If so, this bill could kill VOIP, which could be an intended consequence of some of its sponsors (are phone companies giving some cash to politicians here?)
Third, is this going to create a bureaucracy that will continue to try to expand it's scope and power? The FCC has already been making me feel less comfortable lately, I can only image what an internet regulation board would do. Don't let the camel get its nose in the tent.

Same here- that's why it has such poor 3d performance. Can't even run Civ5 very well
If there aren't jobs for "normal" or "mediocre" people, then why are we bringing in millions of unskilled labor from the country next door?

I guess this explains who will employe all those layed off Nasa workers after the space shuttle was scrapped

The Tea Party gave her some great support and attention initially. She squandered it by making numerous false assertions in the public eye.
