Argh. That's exactly the misunderstanding at the root of this.

what misunderstanding? i said they have a great point. great points get you jack shit. i also said it's not actionable. i'm merely pointing out that it's clearly a nod to PKD.

True, but it's not even the same name. The book refers to the replicants as "Nexus-6" models. This is the "Nexus One" phone.

Would an average person think that the estate of Philip K. Dick endorses the phone based on that? Highly, highly unlikely.

While I think the case isn't actionable, I think PKD's estate has a great point. If the Nexus-6 is the 6th revision of the Androids, and Google is putting out an Android called Nexus One, it is clearly a nod to PKD.

I mean, come on. It's too great an idea for it to be an accident.

  6. Re:Forget the books on Navigating a Geek Marriage? · · Score: 1

Being married (yes I am!) falls in the same category as having friends, being a manager...etc - they are relations that you have, not methods that you apply. That's where all the books have it wrong suggestion that there are techniques to apply instead of being authentic.

Where books help is when you're in a relationship and you think that honesty entails saying everything on your mind. Or that communication means talking about things right then, even if one of you is angry. And sometimes, the books describe a sociopath, and you're like, "holy hell, i need to get out of this relationship..." :)

I concur, but I sure don't like such a slap in the face as having an orgasm and then hearing "You know honey, that really sucked. I hope you do better next time"

What hurts the feelings, in my opinion, is when you've been doing something they don't like for a whole month, THEN they tell you. You gotta be honest and open enough to address issues as they come up. It's also important to tell the person what they do that you DO like, or you run the risk of paralyzing them with insecurity.

But the way to approach it is say, "I don't like it much when you do X, could you spend more time doing Y? I really like that."

So I don't know. Sure, to be successful in business, you have to work to get your sales regardless, but you also have to be conscious of the context that your operating in.

Healthier for your social skills, I guess. Certainly not for your orthography.

I wouldn't even say that. The thing about books is they're not fooling you into thinking you're having human interaction.

The problem with chatting online is that being social involves a lot more than just the data in the words. There's body language, vocal tone, and mostly ungoverned release of hormonal smells.

I think chatting a lot is actually damaging if you haven't spent enough time in real social interaction, because you begin to rely on certain crutches that the chat provides you.

Not that it doesn't help at all, but understanding how people bandy words about is a very rudimentary social skill. That's just been my experience.
