  1. But what about the OS? on The t68i Replacement is Here · · Score: 1

I had a t68, had to pull teeth from Voicestream to get one, was totally excited about it, but then sold it a couple of months later on eBay because I hated it so much. The interface is clunky and hard to use, the thing may actually be *too* light, and the buttons just feel totally cheap.

I got a Motorola V70 instead, and it doesn't have a color screen or bluetooth, but it's a lot closer to the ease-of-use I'd gotten from the Nokia I had previously.

  2. Ballmer in today's article on Microsoft At Middle Age · · Score: 2, Interesting
The one linked in the writeup is from yesterday. Ballmer is interviewed today, and in a section about upcoming challenges for MS, says:

"It's got Unix roots. Unix has had historic strength, but at the end of the day, I'm quite sure we can out-innovate and deliver sort of a better solution than the work of a bunch of uncoordinated hobbyists."

Unfortunately, his performance defied conventional categorization.

Or maybe they just didn't pay the academy enough.

I'm gonna have to go see Chicago now though, for sure. As if Katherine wasn't enough, nine nominations? Neat.

  7. V70 on SMS Messaging Unreliable · · Score: 1

On T-Mobile, messages seem to increasingly return an error when sent, generating "message not sent" on a Nokia phone. On my Motorola V70 though, when that happens it just keeps trying to send it, and then beeps with a little note when it finally goes through.

  9. Tell me something I don't know. on SCO Has "Made No Decision" On Linux IP Claims · · Score: 1

  10. What ever happened to double-sided double-density? on 16x DVD-R Drives Planned for 2004 · · Score: 1

When DVDs were first coming out, all the talk was about the fact that you could write two layers on each side, thus getting rediculous amounts of data on them. Are there double-sided DVD-R discs? Are there burners that can do double layers?

  11. Not terribly useful... on Modding A Paper Shredder · · Score: 1

When I read the title I was hoping they build a scanner into the shredder that sends the almost-shredded documents via wifi to somewhere else, preventing sabotage.

The FBI should make these and plant them at Accenture. Handy industrial espionage tool, too.

  12. RSS? on Freshmeat Launches Mac OS X Section · · Score: 2, Insightful

They should really add an RSS feed to that. Just for me. Like a Christmas present, you know? That would be great.

Same goes for apple.slashdot. That would be like *double* Christmas.

  13. I was scared to hear this one. on Are Blogging and Unemployment Related? · · Score: 4, Interesting
I had a job interview this week, and when my future boss came into the room, she said "I feel like I know you already! I've been reading your blog all day!" I had linked it from my professional site but I wouldn't have if I felt I had enough good examples of work without it.

They ended up hiring me anyway, but it was really strange to be on that kind of unequal footing.

  14. Have you considered... on Updating Quickbooks Forces Online Membership? · · Score: 3, Interesting

...sending your rant to them, instead of /.? I'm sure a quick search would come up with OSS alternatives, but I'm sure you'd prefer to stick with what you're used to. If you emailed them, and then followed up with a phone call to voice your concerns, I'm sure you wouldn't be the only one. If they become aware that some users actually do read their click-throughs, changing their ways would set a precedent for other companies.

  16. Took long enough... on High Tech Shopping Carts Offer Discounts, Ads · · Score: 2, Informative

I remember a Vons Pavillions in Orange county having a b&w LCD screen on it that told you where you were, what was on sale, and where to find what you were looking for back in like, 1995.

I only ever saw it at the one store, but I always thought it was really neat. Sort of spooky.

As far as privacy goes, it's not like there's anything personally identifying your path through the store with *you*, and even if there was, they already know everything you buy with your "club card" anyway. Just give them fake contact info when you sign up and it's all good.

  17. Almost sounds good. on Neuros - Portable MP3 player, FM radio, Digital Recorder · · Score: 2, Insightful

One of the main features of the iPod is that you can mount it like a regular disk and just drop whatever you want on it. On the 20GB model this is a major feature, because really, do you *need* 20GB of music in your pocket (~340 hours at 128k!)? But you might need 10GB and an offsite backup of some data, or something.

Looks like this doesn't do that. Also looks like they totally stole the UI of the iPod (okay, it's a good UI, now come up with another good one). It's also damn ugly.

And why do I want to take my high-quality digital MP3s and send them over the comparatively crappy-sounding FM band to listen to them? If they really wanted to make this a home stereo component, there would be a digital out. For the car, just use a tape adapter or a line-in.

Plus the whole Windows-only thing is silly. Why do I want "synchronization software," especially from a company I've never heard of? Keep it simple.

This thing *almost* sounds really good. Almost.

  18. Tangent on Wading Through Weblogs, One Idea at a Time · · Score: 2, Informative

I'm a day late, but I was away from computing yesterday. I run another project called Tangnet, that is sort of a similar idea, but (at this point) makes no attempt to link blog postings by idea, but focuses more on common traits between the authors of blogs. It's new but growing.

  20. Missing the point on Wanted: Female Game Testers · · Score: 1

Previous posters here are missing the real issue - they're making another Tomb Raider game. Dear god why? Aren't there like six of them already, that are all pretty much identical? Are they trying to make it into a Mega Man franchise or something?

  21. Training? Huh? on Are You Getting Enough Say In Your Training? · · Score: 1

You mean some companies actually pay people for their time in learning new things? They don't just say "Hey, we have to do this project in technology Y," so buy a book, expense it, and have it done in a month? What a novel idea. Maybe it's because I work in a small company (~50 people), but corporate-sponsored training is pretty much unheard of to me.

  22. Neat idea on Pie-Menus in Mozilla · · Score: 1

  24. Bluetooth application on NYC Law Aims To Ban Cell Phones In Theatres · · Score: 2, Insightful

One of the things I kept reading as an application for Bluetooth, when it was still totally vaporware, was that people could set up "no-phone zones" wherein any phone in the area would just shut off, or go to vibrate mode, or whatever.

I'm guessing no one actually made that happen, though. I have a bluetooth phone now, and the manual doesn't say anything about that. Would be nice though eh?

  25. Just a regular album preview on David Bowie on Music, Copyrights, Distribution · · Score: 1
