The downside is that AC requires only a series of transformers to step it down to various levels for local power distribution--- Makes for a relatively straightfoward infrastructure.

DC for all practicle purposed MUST be converted to AC for this purpose, via big honking inverters, unless you happen to NEED 250KV@1000A.

Its obvious most people here run Linux, just because it's Linux - not because they are trying solve any type of business problem or make money or anything. In the end they will spend hundreds of needless hours to have to learn how to do something in Linux compared to Windows, well, just because its Linux.

(wasting words on a troll, but I feel compelled to somehow...)

No, not JUST because it's Linux...
I only run Linux as I was exshausted from the self flaggelation of trying to keep a Windows box up.

    I gave up in 1994...

Based on what I have seen on many many Win boxes over the years I have had to fix, it hasn't really improved THAT much (overall) on the Windows side of the aisle, some things better, some things worse.(PnP works, but now you have a regisrty... Ugh)

Linux has shown very steady improvement in most all areas, at a seemingly ever increasing rate.

In the days of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, the USAF developed dedicated anti-radar aircraft nicknamed "Wild Weasels", originally F-4s IIRC, might have been an earlier version... Can't recall.

In any case, the acronym for their mission plan (originally for defense vs the invading Soviet Horde in Europe) was "SEAD"--Supression of Enemy Air Defenses": Knocking out a radar system ANTENNA was sufficient to take it offline long enough to get your forces safely by to do your primary mission. Made sense under the inteneded scenarios.

In the first Gulf War, they modified the mission ----
The Weasels would go in first and "Supress" defenses by fragging the radar dish etc, then to prevent anyone from fixing the site, a herd of whatever else could blow up things (Apaches, A-10s, F16s) would arrive and blow the absolute hell out of everything else that moved or not. The location essentially became a smoking hole in the ground.

    Radio jamming site antenna/Radar dish:
$20-250K, replace in 24 hours (or less)

Unit of highly skilled Radar technicians that took years to train, in wartime:
    (Almost) priceless

The new methodology is called "Destruction of Enemy Air Defenses", or "DEAD".

The GUI works fine, smooth, minimal lag. (K7Barton2800+/1G ram/Nvidia card+driver) as long as these processes are NOT doing heavy file I/O.

If mythcommflag runs (niced), or anything else with even moderate HD access (whereisdb), the system CRAWLS at ~20% CPU or less usage.

Is there some method of setting up some sort of qos-like bandwith limiter to the HD for niced processes?
