As the AC suggested, Ubuntu is pretty easy, although I suggest just booting a Knoppix CD/DVD as a first try to see if the hardwares all OK etc.
(Ubuntu will support more HW though and it will be better for a real system)

If you jactually want to install Knoppix do the following:

1:open console.(at VT is fine, hit ctl+alt+F2, skip to 3)
2:If you want to stay in X11, once the Konsole opens, type su
    3:There is no password.

How about some sort of "open" tower that would contain the artificial vortex, have a generating turbine at the top.

A large artificial vortex "system", if installed somewhere like OK sould tap into the existing (very common) outside atmospheric heat/energy, and get some free "solar" turbocharging so to speak.

The trick I suppose would be making a system that would not allow self sustaining vortex to get "away" in that environment---maybe shut down under certain weather conditions?

idea is in the public domain. Some engineering and assembly required.

and realized that I could build a PC for FAR less that would be many times faster,

I STILL miss some features from the Ami, (datatypes, drag and drop into requesters, not sure if that was std tho)

I run Linux because I LIKE the UI (KDE), it allows me to generally do whatever I need to do, when I want to do it,

Linux requires absolutely NO real effort to "keep it alive" as any Win install does.
(I hate fixing Windows boxes. I HATE doing clean installs... MDK takes ~30 min total, incl updates.)

I have (mostly) used Mandrake since ~v7.1, and have installed (but not switched to) 2006.0.
(spare partition/dual boot with 2005LE, testing Mythtv etc before switching)
