After a week, if you still want to keep it up and stretch your legs, you find out that you'll need an additional drive cause movies take up a lot of hd space. Whoa! $300 for an external firewire drive?!? $999 for FCP 3?!? How come my desktop viewing area isn't really big enough to see everything I need to when doing video editing? Oh, another $400 for an external monitor?

Suddenly your overpriced Imac doesn't see like sucha great bargain and you find out that if you had DONE some legwork instaed of just blindly believing Apple's commercial, that you WOULD have bought a G4. But wait, I can buy a PC for half as much (I can at least) that will do the same thing?

BTW, I work at BorisFX(.com). We make plugins for every major NLE, both Mac and Windows. We make the text generator for FCP. I work with a LOT of Mac users. I have two family members with Imacs. I have at least 5 friends who do also. I think I have my finger on the Mac market. And you know what, excluding sys admins who now like Macs becuase of *nix, most Mac users, especially those who bought a Mac to do video editing are AOL/internet bottom feeders. Of course, as they raise themselves up into some knowledge of computers and the internet, they ALL realize that they wouldn't have bought an Imac had they know how limiting it would be (harware, not software) and all have the same question:

"Why in the world did I pay so much for a computer that can't grow with my hobby without paying a LOT more money?"

Perhaps doing a little reasearch to get a PC that can grow with your needs (or a G4 - though its out of most consumer's price range) would be better than dumping $2500 bucks to get an Imac that can do almost what you need for video editing.

And that's why I don't like the Apple ad campaings. I think they get newbies to buy something that really wont suit their needs long term.

I work for BorisFX(.com). We make the text generator in the past couple of versions of FCP, along with plugins for every major NLE on the market for both Mac and Windows.

I guess the thing is that got to me was specifically the commercial where the guy speaks about video.

The problem is that Imacs aren't a good solution for those who want their video hobby to grow. You can buy a Firewire card that comes with decent NLEs. You can fit an additional drive in most PCs you buy.

If you have an Imac, you need to spend $999 for FCP and $300 for an external Firewire drive. That's a real kick in the teeth when you already spent too much on an Imac (IMHO). I like OS X. I don't like to have to buy Apple hardware that they seem to build without expanding your video hobby in mind. And thay are marketing it to you to do just that.

  13. Re:Just another reason... on Mac OS X to Get Journaling FS · · Score: 2

I would agree with you that Sony is suspect. But I would also say that if one buys an Imac to do video editing, they will quickly run out of options. No space for an additional HD (except getting porked by buying an external Firewire drive) and once you outgrow Imovie, you will be paying $1000 for FCP, $300 for a firewire drive, and $50 for a good amount of ram.

I know Imac users who are kicking themselves becuase, at least for video editing, they feel like they have an overpriced toy instead of a machine that can really do more than basic video editing.

BTW, I work for BorisFX(.com) and we make plugins for all of the major NLE's, including the actual text generator in FCP. Macs are cool, but again, Apple sells Imac Imovie making machines that are overpriced and seem to only entertain those who want to make videos for a VERY short period of time. It ends up seeming like a waste of money.

well, I suppose that Macs can do rudimentary video editing, but why in the world would anyone use Windows Movie Maker?!?

I work for BorisFX(.com) and I have never heard of it or would understand why anyone would want to use Windows Movie Maker.

I can understand the attraction for some to get a Mac to do some video editing. Again though, the default setup they ship is for very low end editing. I know a few folks who got an Imac to do editing and they all quickly outgrew Imovie and wanted to move onto FCP.

Once they found out that they needed to pay an additional $999 for FCP, plus the fact that their original HD will very quickly run out of room (no room for an additional HD in an IMAC, but you can get fisted and purchase an external Firewire drive) for another few hundred bucks.

Suddenly buying a cheaper PC to begin with with room for the extra drive they need, a firewire (or analog capture) card that comes with Premiere (certainly no FCP of choice, but still good) so that they aren't stuck with a system that can't grow with their hobby.

In the end, Mac is good, Imacs for playing with movies for more than a week is bad.

Apple commercial: "I wanted to do video editing and no one could help me to do it on a PC". What a fucking moron. If you can't use a search engine, what makes you think you could edit video? For God's sake, you can buy a PC with a firewire card and some cheap editing software and BAM! you can bring your video right in.

I understand that OS X is great for us geeks, but pulease stop bringing up the commercial that HAS to be targeted at AOL users and other internet bottom feeders.

Tivo has a heads up over Replay because it had more marketing dollars (by initially charging their customers a monthly or one time fee). Tivo is also owned by Phillips.

Tivo willfully shares your Tivo data with others.

Tivo has violated their privacy agreement with you a number of times. They changed their privacy policy to allow them to share your data without notifying their customers. The link they provided in their manual still made you click through on about 3 or 4 links before actually getting to the policy. I know of many Tivo owners who were concerned about their privacy were in an absolute uproar about this.

Replay TV refused to share your private information and were almost forced to do so. They paid lawyers to keep my information to themselves.

Though Replay now charges a monthly fee like Tivo on NEW units, I have a unit that did not have this charge. I paid $300 for a 20 hour Replay TV and have never spent a dime since.

Replay TV has allowed for me to access my Replay TV from anywhere with an internet connection. I have heard that Tivo has also adopted this. Not sure though.

Replay TV gave me the 30 second skip so that I can easily bypass commercials. I believe Tivo has also snagged this feature as well?

One thing that Tivo has over Replay is that it was the first to let you can hack it to add larger drives. (1, 2, 3)
ReplayTV does now too. (1, 2) Tivo has historically been easier to do so, but I'm not sure about these days.

Overall, features on both are very similar, though the methodology to record shows is a little different. Replay gives you more pause time as it isn't just recording things it THINKS you MIGHT like. Replay makes you be specific about what you want to record, though they have theme recording channels. Tivo is programed to make certain assumptions about what you want it to record in addition to what you specifically specify.

I know folks who own one or the other. Regardless of brand, they are both extremely happy with their new options for watching TV. For those of you who say, I barely watch TV, its likely because you think there's too much crap on. There is, but with one of these units, you will only be watching exactly what you want, without commercials. Iron Chef, Battlebots, Simpsons (I have archived almost 2/3s of all episodes), Southpark, West Wing, 24, shows for your kids/infants (ON DEMAND!!!) and both can wait for shows that aren't even in the programming guide yet.

Though Tivo is on better financial ground right now, Replay TV isn't and hasn't historically been as shady about your privacy.

Bottom, line, do the math and find yourself the best deal. Even if one or both went out of business, we'd make a hack to grab the programing information anyway.

For those of you who have an infant child and want to bring he/she to the movie, try some of the following:

    - Your kid naps. Usually like clockwork. Time your movie for when the kid is about to fall asleep. We would keep our child from napping until we actually got to the movie. This usually can get you through about half of the movie with a sleeping child.

    - Breast feed/bottle. Have these ready to go when the child wakes up.

    - Biter cookies (Gerber). These are intended for teething infants/todlers. These cookies are hard and if your child has yet to have much of any teeth, one cookie will keep the kid busy for a good 15 to 20 minutes. We'd bring at least 4 to 5 of them. Overkill is necessary as they get dropped on the floor.

Out of 20 or so movies, we have had to remove the baby from the theater twice. Once was because we didn't follow our own rules (family corraled us to go against our better judgement) and the other time, his teeth hurt so bad, that nothing (short term) would keep him from crying. We've learned since then that having our child pre-party with a bit of kiddie ibuprofren with a bit of ambesol if needed works wonders.

Yes, I know that those two movies that we attended with a cranky baby, likely caused a few frowns, but as we care about our own movie experiences, we were extrememly quick to remove him from the theater once he wouldn't settle down. We'd never think of staying in there with him crying.

We are getting to the point now where he usually walks where he pleases and if the movie doesn't keep him attentive, he wont want to keep in one place. We don't go as often at this point (and very rarely with him).

But maybe he could hold the video camera. That might keep him busy. After all, he can minimally use the Replay TV to start *shudder* Barney, Sesame Street, ect. 17 months old. I can barely believe it myself.
