  2. Re:YEAH! No crappy DISHNET! on FCC Approves Digital Radio, Kills Satellite Merger · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually Dish Network had intended to keep the networks separate for the foreseeable future. Their's and DirecTV's satelite systems are not compatible and it would cost BILLIONS to deobit and replace the DirecTV satelites. It would also cost Billions to replace all those recievers and I guarantee you consumers aren't going to buy new equipment. They would be more likely to get cable. IMO, this isn't really a bad or good thing. Combining Dish Network and DirecTV would have provided a strong competitor to monopolistic AOLTIMEWARNER, ATT, Charter, and Cablevision. Dish Network had promised to give up some satelite slots to Cablevision too so that they could start a satelite competitor. On the other side of the coin, we will still have two satelite competitors and DirecTV will most likely become the property of NewsCorp (if their hacking doesn't kill it) pretty soon. Now all I want is my NFL Sunday Ticket on Dish Network (coming next season).

I don't think the point is whether or not he committed a crime. He obviously did break the law, whether that law is right or not isn't the argument. The point is that a rapist would get less prison time. The sentence for his NON VIOLENT crime is not proportional to the crime committed. Prisons are overcrowded as it is without putting in non violent offenders. There are much more creative ways of punishing someone than throwing them to the anal rape factory that turns minor criminals into hard criminal.

  8. Why was this modded as a Troll? on Battery-Powered Plane Taxis, Set To Fly Soon · · Score: 1

Everything he just wrote was absolutely true. Until they make batteries that are practical for more than running a remote control or power tools all these engineering studies are a waste of time and resources. If you want to make electric powered vehicles, then you need to put more funding into energy storage. Flywheel technology is a better storage medium than a battery and doesn't need the toxic chemical that a battery does. Chrysler has toyed with the concept for a while now but didn't go on to overcome the technological hurdles of the technology. Fuel cells, as stated many times in this thread, have vastly better potential than any other technology out there for powering personal vehicles. The powerplant is now small enough to be practical. Now they just need to work out fuel storage or conversion to bring it to market.

That was my exact thought when I read the article. I watch the news at least 2 hours a day. I read Drudge, MSNBC, CNN, FoxNews, and of course /. on the internet. I've never once heard of this poor child. John caught my attention because I was thinking the exact same thing as I watched the O'Reily Factor on Fox last night. O'Reily has had updates on the Start case since the poor kid was snatched. I was sitting there thinking, "I wonder how many black children were kidnapped this week that didn't make national news?" Only America's Most Wanted seems to truly cover child abductions across racial and economic lines. John's comments about the Smart case and the news being about money is definitly something to think about. I was thinking along racial lines myself but, IMO, he has made a good point. I only pray that both these kids are found ALIVE.
