  9. Easy Solution... Don't Buy Textbooks on Ripoff 101: Gouging Students for Textbooks · · Score: 1
Heres how I've managed to avoid buying more than the bare minimum of textbooks over the last three years of tertiary study:
    • Wait several weeks before even thinking about buying a text, often I've found texts mentioned in introductory lectures as 'mandatory' or 'highly recomended' are actually rarely used throughout the course.
    • Make friends with a student one year ahead of you and borrow books they used last year for a semester.
    • Check out the library. At my university it's common practice for a lecturer to ensure that one or two copies of any mandatory text are available for borrowing. More often than not they are in the short loans section so you can't borrow them for long term study but it's perfectly fine for completing an exercise or two or photocopying a chapter (sometimes older editions are available for normal borrowing).
    • Buy co-operatively. You can share the cost of a text over several students and then sell the book off at the end of the semester. As long as everyone plays nicely and avoids last minute rushes this works accpetably well.

  17. Bluetooth Anyone? on Using Your Cellphone To Control RC Cars · · Score: 2, Interesting

Wouldn't Bluetooth be a better way of achieving this? If they were to make the cars recieve they're control via Bluetooth, any Bluetooth device (including phones) with the appropriate software could control them. This would mean your not tied into buying a particular phone for what is nothing more than a gimmick (albeit an incredibly cool gimmick). Of course I make this with no real understanding of the latency involved in Bluetooth or the cost of a reciever (although I do remember it was originally supposed to be cheap enough to embed in everything).

We actually did pretty much the same thing for a 'Design and Technology' project in high school. The team who got their car to go the furthest won a small cash prize. Of course on our side of the planet there's this thing called aerodynamics so the bottles were mounted horizontally. Beyond that the only secret to getting maximum velocity out of these things is to experiment and find the optimum volume of water, so that you run out of proppellant at the same time as the pressure runs out.
