  1. Thanks. That fits with everything else I know. on Hans Reiser Interview on ABC's 20/20 · · Score: 1

That is one of the most insightful replies I've ever seen on Slashdot. It fits with everything else I know.

My grandparent post is still marked "Off Topic". Crazy.

  2. Weird: on Hans Reiser Interview on ABC's 20/20 · · Score: 1

    Quote from the 20/20 story:

"Sturgeon won't talk publicly until after the trial, but after Nina's disappearance he made a bold confession to police, so outrageous that the judge won't allow it to be mentioned in court. He claims to be a serial killer, but said he is not responsible for Nina's death."

  5. People have computers, and don't need another. on The Dying PC Market · · Score: 1

Quote from the Slashdot article: "The PC's role in Japanese homes is diminishing..."

It's sad that, after all these years, Slashdot editors have not learned to be editors.

Actually, the computers most people have are adequate for what they do. They don't need another computer. That's why manufacturers are selling fewer computers, not because "The PC's role is diminishing..."

  6. Not just "unlucky". on Netflix May Already Be Killing Blockbuster? · · Score: 1

    It's not just "unlucky".

Blockbuster has a problem with sloppy employee training. My experience with them is that they are extremely sloppy. Going to Blockbuster means risking being abused.

MOD PARENT UP. Quote: "The problem is some OS vendors, like Microsoft, incorrectly report the drive size using a strange base-1024 system."

As usual, there are useless discussions on Slashdot with little clarity. Thanks for the parent comment which makes the issue clear.

No one seems to have mentioned that there is no real refund, because the same trick is used as with rebates. The time that it takes to do the paperwork will be, for most people, worth more than the 5% refund. Lawyers may make money, but few customers will get anything.

  8. GSM is the global standard. on Verizon Might Deliver Google Phone · · Score: 0

Remember, GSM is the global standard, and unlocked 4-band GSM phones are the only ones compatible with GSM in all areas.

"GSM is used by over 2 billion people across more than 212 countries and territories." If you go to another country, you can get a local phone number merely by purchasing a SIM card. A local number is excellent because then new acquaintances can always reach you if they want to talk or invite you somewhere.

Remember also that the business model of cellular phone companies has been that they deliberately won't handle surges in traffic, but will simply drop or distort calls.

  9. Brazilians don't listen to Spanish music. on Cisco Offices Raided, Execs Arrested In Brazil · · Score: 1

"What do you mean in item 19?"

One example is that, in general, Brazilians don't listen to Spanish-language music. That's especially remarkable because Brazilians love music more than any other culture I know, and many different kinds of music.

Brazilian attitudes about people from Argentina are more obvious because so many visit Brazil on vacation. But Brazilians don't seem impressed with any Spanish-speaking culture.

I agree, very few Brazilians would treat anyone very badly.

  10. Microsoft intentionally slowing Windows XP? on Microsoft Forces Desktop Search On Windows Update · · Score: 1

One guess: Microsoft is forcing programs that slow down XP so that Vista will look better.

There is also a financial incentive for Microsoft to want all its operating systems to be slow. When people buy new computers to get faster operation, Microsoft gets paid for a new operating system.

People think that Microsoft is a software company that is routinely abusive. But maybe it isn't. Maybe Microsoft is an abuse company that uses software as a means of delivering abuse. If you look at it that way, Microsoft is excellent at what it does.

We seem to live in a society dominated by abusers. The dollar is being inflated so that oil and weapons investors will have enough money to fight a war for oil.

  11. Two more ideas about Brazil: on Cisco Offices Raided, Execs Arrested In Brazil · · Score: 1

    18) Brazilians often have very negative ideas about their country. That's especially true of Brazilians who don't live in Brazil.

    19) Brazilians consider their culture incompatible with any of the Spanish-speaking cultures.

  12. Yes, I think that, and you think it, also. on Stallman Attacked by Ninjas · · Score: 1

  14. About Techno Brega on Brazilian Pop Music Scene Thrives on Piracy · · Score: 1

About Techno Brega music, from Good Copy, Bad Copy, a free documentary.

In Brazil it is not unusual for a local band to draw 800 people.

You can see how Techno Brega is made, and how artists make money: About Techno Brega - from "GOOD COPY BAD COPY" - Part 2 of 2

  15. Read the last paragraphs. Brazil is 1st in change. on Brazilian Pop Music Scene Thrives on Piracy · · Score: 2, Interesting

From the story: "Tecnobrega producer Beto Metralha said the music developed out of necessity in a place where few musicians could afford to pay a whole band and most music consumers don't take home enough money to buy non-pirated CDs. The average ensemble consists of little more than a keyboardist and a singer, sometimes accompanied by an electric bass. The signature shuffle rhythm is derived entirely from a single program on an electronic keyboard."

And: "Brazil's top-selling Banda Calypso, whose "brega" sound paved the way for tecnobrega, claims to have sold more than 4 million CDs nationwide, avoiding traditional distribution networks and marketing its CDs directly through news stands and other unconventional outlets."

And: ' "Before you couldn't get your record played on the radio if you couldn't afford payola. Now if a song hits big with the aparelhagens, the radio has no choice but to play it," says Metralha. "The dynamic has changed." '

Brazil seems to be ahead of the rest of the world in creating new forms of music. It's not surprising that cultural changes in how music is distributed happen in Brazil.

  16. Follow the money. on Driver Update Can Cause Vista Deactivation · · Score: 3, Insightful

MOD PARENT UP. Quote: "Any substantial commercial XP application that has been around for any significant amount of time will almost certainly run into problems under Vista."

Follow the money. Microsoft apparently wants you to pay, and pay, and pay again. Big commercial software companies will advertise Vista if it is necessary to buy a new version of their software to use with Vista.

Apparently to Microsoft the user is not the customer. Microsoft apparently considers the user just a dog on a leash.

I suppose the constant negative stories about Microsoft make it difficult for Microsoft to hire the really good programmers. If that is true, expect more unfinished products with poor characteristics in the future.

For another example, Cheney and Bush, who with their friends and family have a long history of oil and weapons investing, are allowed the conflict of interest of deciding to have wars to get control of oil supply. The result is that the value of your money is falling. Rich people who are heavily invested in companies that can raise prices want inflation partly because inflation causes the value of the money they pay employees to drop.

  17. He pays a HUGE price for his areas of not caring. on Stallman Attacked by Ninjas · · Score: 1

He doesn't care about the social rules of the group he is visiting.

He doesn't care about what people think concerning a vast range of other social issues having to do with behavior in public.

All I'm saying is that he pays a HUGE price for his areas of not caring. He wants to influence human culture. He wants to influence how people think. He is self-defeating in the way he does that.

Stallman pays not only a financial price, but a social price, also. He probably does not accurately evaluate the social cost of acting differently, otherwise he would not want to pay such a high social price.

In some ways he is extremely intelligent, but socially he is a lost puppy.

  21. Rich CEOs talk only to other millionaires. on Little Old Lady Hammers Comcast · · Score: 4, Informative

I like this quote from the Washington Post article: Her take on Comcast: "What a bunch of sub-moronic imbeciles."

Another quote: "Manassas police spokesman Sgt. Tim Neumann says there have been other police calls to that Comcast office..." I would love to know why.

Quote from the parent comment: "I called Comcast and started screaming. This got me somewhere as I finally got escalated to the CEO's office where they had a customer care executive assigned to me."

You never get to the CEO's office, I'm guessing. They just say that to try to make you think they believe your complaint is important. In 2005, the Comcast CEO made $14.3 million, just for that one year. I know, I know what you are thinking: "I'm sad. He had a bad year!" But, don't worry, in 2006 he made $27.8 million.

I think that it is safe to assume that someone who makes millions each year for doing a bad job has no concerns whatsoever about any troubles you have with his company. Any phony expression of concern is handled by people who barely make a living.

In case you want to express your horror that he only makes tens of millions instead of hundreds of millions each year, contact the Comcast CEO directly: Brian Roberts.

Why is being rich considered by rich people a license to be evil?

  22. Yes, the corruption is more hidden in the U.S. on Cisco Offices Raided, Execs Arrested In Brazil · · Score: 1

"The only thing I don't like about US is that they think they are the peacemakers of international relations. I mean, Iraq can't have nukes and US can? Have Iraq ever used a nuke to kill innocent civilians?"

    Good observation.

"... the air is so polluted..."

The air is more polluted in San Diego, on days when the wind is blowing south from Los Angeles. Why? Partly because people in L.A. have so many more cars than in São Paulo. Partly because there are few cars fueled with alcohol in Los Angeles.

"Also, I feel much more safe walking down the street."

    Good point.

"Do they [American women] despite [despise] men? Treat them badly?"

You don't know very much about women in the U.S. if you ask that question. See this quote from a comment in this Slashdot thread: "... many men all around the world seem to regard American women as some of the most aggressive and downright ferocious females on the whole darn planet. I have traveled a great deal and talked with guys about this perception in more than 50 countries."

"First you talk about corruption and use WAR arguments to support that?"

Part of the taxes you pay in San Diego, California will go for murdering innocent people, because the people who control the U.S. government want to make more profit in weapons and oil. Because you are paying the government to kill, you are now a killer. How do you feel about that?

"If the US is more corrupt, then they hide that a LOT better than we do."

That's the issue, entirely. Cheney has engineered a largely secret overthrow of the U.S. government, and broken the rule of law that was strong for decades. You can see a video about that, if you like: Cheney's Law (First aired yesterday, on 2007-10-16)
